Hrmmm, well I buy CD's when I have money. Lets put it that way, I like having a hard copy of music. I can tell you every single CD I have just about, give or take a few. No idea with my MP3's. I mean I keep my computer library very organized, to the point I might almost say I'm anal about it. Just there is no real registration that I have an album when I download it and listen to it once and move on.
Also, I don't own any speakers or cd players, just a laptop. So all those CDs are getting ripped anyways, I'm just weird about encoding I like to have all my music in FLAC and then transfer it to MP3 for portable use. Not that it makes a difference though, since joining this forum I've been more interested in the music than about whether or not its encoded correctly. But yeah the real reason I want to buy hard copies though, is that I do eventually plan on getting a nice rig to play them on at some point. Once I scape together 2 grand or so...lol. Maybe some vinyl as well , oh yeah that sounds sweet haha. |

You're listening to all your music through laptop speakers?
Dude, any music is definately worth more than that. I myself sometimes have these moments when I have some more money than most of the time. I then just go to the store with a certain amount of cash and buy records for that money. I always have lists of things to buy. Will be going next tuesday. Carrying about 100 dollars. So that should be good

lol, not quite I figured headphones were a givin. I've got a sweet pair of Grado SR-60is, they make my music sound freaking fantastic. Was just saying I don't actually put those CDs into a nice stereo is all, they are getting ripped instantly. So..technically I wouldn't HAVE to buy them, I just like to.
But, since joining these forums I don't want to think about how much music I have downloaded recently. I have a huge shopping list going right now, lol. Basically, I try to match up what I download and like, with hard copies. Yeah most of my CDs were bought used/new off of amazon, no record stores out in the boonies. Never really got the feel of a record store. Only thing I would really look forward to if I got a record player is shopping around yard sales and whatnot for those vintage vinyls. |

Thank god for the Grado. That is indeed a nice pair of headphones.
I'm not sure if you prefer listening to music via headphones or just haven't bought speakers yet. But there's some nice active speakers on the market for the price of your headphones (each ). You won't need an amp for those. Just a thought. I love a good pair of headphones, but it's not quite the same as listening to speakers. And I like to be able to walk around while I listen to music now and then About record players: There's no really GOOD Player you can hook up to your laptop. These USB things are crap. All of them You can buy a NAD PP3 phono preamp you can hook up to your laptop and get a nice second hand turntable. You can buy decent players for under $40 that kick the ass of every under $200 new player available now. Eitherway, I'm not sure what you really want. Kind of carried away. Yeah. Audiophile madness

Oh I have a few ideas...lol, and they are all expensive!
Honestly, I might just invest in a good Digital to Analog Converter to hook into my computer via USB, and run that out to some speakers. Yeah for my rig I'm looking at an integrated amp, probably Marantz PM-5004, some Paradigm Atom speakers, and a Pro-ject Debut III turn table. Round $1k usd right there, blah. Apparently awesome budget rig right there though. Now I'm going to see if there is an audiophile thread started. |

You're looking the right way, but that's an awful lot of money.
The pro-ject is nice, but it's not all that much better than a Technics SL-D3 or a Pioneer PL-516 The Technics goes togeter beautifully with a dead cheap Audio Technica AT95E cartridge and the Pioneer does brilliantly with a Grado Green. Don't forget these machines cost more in their time than the Pro-ject does now and that's still audible. I've never been a big fan of Marantz myself, but that's probably all about taste. I have a Audiolab 8000SE integrated amplifier that sounds brilliant. Hook it up to any speaker and it'll make it shine. As for speakers, what about the B&W CDM1, they're rather nice. Or the Wharfedale Diamond 9.1. They're said to be really good. Haven't heard those, will soon. Don't mind having old wooden boxes in your living room? Buy the dirt cheap IMF Super Compact II and thank me later. I've had expensive tannoys, B&W CDM1's, Acoustic Research, KEF, Impulse, Dali and more expensive IMF's but nothing could beat the little Super Compact II. Incredible speaker. I'm not all that much into CD players. I love my Yamaha CDX-880, but that's because it's modified (other clock, exit muting and new laser). It sounds like crap when it's non-modified. Then it's actually a very bad player. The Philips CD 880 sounds very nice too, but I guess that's pretty hard to get there. Rather expensive, too. And a DAC via USB, sounds like one step too much actually. Why not just buy a nice USB sound card? I have an ESI U24 in my living room that's just brilliant. You could also buy a cheap ass sound card with digital out and hook it up to a DAC. Works pretty nice. Want to go dirt cheap? Find a defective DAT, MiniDisc or DCC player that was once expensive (I.e. something from Sony's ES series or a Philips DCC 730 or 951). As long as it can be put on rec/pause, it's a brilliant DAC. So far for budget tips. In case you're curious, apart from the Audiolab 8000SE and IMF Super Compact II's, I've got a Sony PS-X70 record player (not at all into sony, but this one is brilliant) with a Goldring 1022GX cartridge. Still looking for a good preamp though. Used a Teac PA4 for a long time but that's a bit too bright for me. Now using a NAD PP1. Lacks in detail, but it's easy to the ear. Having a hard time with that. Eitherway, whatever you do, I'm glad you're not into buying the plastic crap they throw at you nowadays. It's horrible. One more thing about speakers before I go: There's no substitute for cubic inches . p.s.: Want to go really cheap? Find a Luxman L200, Wharfedale 504's Philips CD 650 and a Technics SL-22 with an AT95E .
