This thread has devolved into the utterly typical U.S. vs. Britain war that consistently plagues this forum

Rubbish!

The allied war effort on the western front should never be forgotten nor undermined.

Please don't try and compare it with the eastern front though, or belittle the sacrifice and importance of the Soviets, because it's incomparable.

I'm not belittling anything, my point is that without the United States the Soviets would've most likely lost the war (and vice versa if the United States was fighting the war alone).

If anything, you were the one that seemed to be not giving much credit to the western front...

Where did I say that?

I'm saying that the Russian contribution is nearly always overlooked by the Americans. This is a truism.
In reality the most bitter fighting was done in the east.
I'm taking nothing away from the western front and especially nothing away from America's contribution.

what i find is reprehensible is the lack of history which is taught about the war in the far east. THAT was where the atrocities really occurred.

Soviet could probably have won the war without the US' help, but then most of not the whole of Western Europe would've fallen behind the Iron Curtain. That's the US' most important contribution.

There's even worse atrocities than the nazi extermination camps dotted throughout the occupied eastern european countries?

I'm not sure who you're speaking for when you say "the Americans", but in my school they taught us just as much about the eastern front and the Soviets' contribution as they did the western front. And while I won't speak for a whole country and say "the British", based on my experiences, most British people are quick to dismiss anything pro-American as arrogance and ignorance, when in fact, it is history. The bottom line is both the Soviets and the Americans we're crucial to the Allies success, and without one or the other the world may have been a very different place right now

My grandfather fought in the war, and hundreds of thousands of our men died because of that war. We are a small country too. If American's really could have won the war hands down they would have got involved far earlier.

yup

go read up on the rape of Nanking. also, the Holocaust wasn't even the worst genocide of the era, Stalin cleared out 20M without hesitation.

now that i think about it that's probably why that pie chart looks like it does.
