Up in the arctic, we're very careful with our rifles. If for some reason we think there might be bear around or we're going to sleep in a tent, we half-load (slide the bolt in but make sure the bullet doesn't go in the chamber) one or two depending on the size of the group. Half-loading is always done under supervision by others in the group, not just so that people don't accidentally walk around with a bullet in the chamber, but also so those without a weapon can trust that the rifle is half-loaded and not loaded. Statistically, people with guns are much more dangerous than polar bears.
