You liked that he stole from his lifelong friends, used the money to try to prove something that had happened didn't happen, and then at the end got forgiven because, oh well basically? Shee! MacFarlane could have written that episode! The only good thing about it was Sigur Ros.

I think your hindsight is being too critical. Developing on Carl's character period was a good move imo.

What hindsight? I'm pointing out what I see as the flaws (and there were so many) in the episode. That's not hindsight. I could hardly have predicted the episode, could I? So how is it hindsight?

Also, should this discussion be removed to the Media subforum? Seems like we've hijacked this thread...

*memory you context ignoring bastard

Except for the ending part, all you did was describe parts of the episode like you were outraged by them, without any indication of why that particular thing was bad.

How can that need explaining? But if you insist. Also, hindsight and memory are not the same thing, just so you know. Oh, and I wasn't outraged by the episode, just amazed that you would choose that as an example of a so-called good current episode.

Carl
Spoiler for In case people have not yet seen it:
robs his lifelong friends of their one chance of happiness. He runs off with their lottery winnings. Bad. Bad for Carl, bad for Homer and co. Bad all round. Terrible thing to have to burden a character with
and yes I know it's not real but you asked for clarification.

Spoiler for same:
Carl thinks his family have been wrongly accused of letting the invaders in. He steals the money to buy the missing page in the book of history that will prove this, but all it proves is that everyone was right all along and his ancestors were scumbag traitors to their own people. Bad for him, and doubly bad that his friends (who, somehow, remain his friends even after he has ripped them off) cover up this fact instead of sharing it with him.

At the end, all is forgiven. Perhaps an upbeat message, yes, but unrealistic. If your buddy robbed your lottery winnings, no matter for what,
would you ever forgive him?

How much more do you want? How was that a good episode? How did it influence Carl's character development in any way but badly? He has now the burden of carrying the guilt
Spoiler for and again:
of having ripped off his friends, thinks his family are innocent and they're not,
so is pretty much back where he started, except he, you know, robbed his mates of their one chance of happiness.

All bad. Can't see any good in it whatever. Also, that's my opinion so don't tell me it's wrong, but I fail to see how you can say that there was good character development for Carl. It was a clear case of the writers, again, reaching, and coming up with perhaps one of the most preposterous storylines ever in the show. And no, it did not raise so much as a chuckle. As I said, Sigur Ros. That was it. Terrible, on every level.

Happy?

Homer Simpson is a former astronaut and you're upset that the Simpsons are unrealistic?

As I said, I know it's not real. Cartoons are cartoons. Nobody's going to start debating the merits of allowing Roadrunner to lead Wile E Coyote over the cliff, or rage about Tom getting beaten up by something Jerry did. But you're the one who brought character development into it, therefore you opened the door for a semi-serious discussion, as if this were written about real people. Nobody worries about Mickey Mouse's character developing, or whether it's realistic to expect Bert and Ernie to sleep in the same bed. All that's understood, and I of course realise that The Simpsons is not to be taken seriously. But in the context (your own word) of our conversation, and given that you were already assigning more importance to simple cartoon characters than they deserve, I was discussing the episode in that light.

So yes, if a Simpsons episode is unrealistic but funny, I don't mind too much but I do prefer them to make a certain amount of sense. If, however, an episode is unrealistic AND NOT funny, then I would have a problem with it being held up as an example of how the show is not in the toilet, or at least, waiting outside bursting to go. I neither found the Carl episode well written nor funny, so that's why I was surprised you did. What, may I ask, did you find particularly funny about it, if anything?

Edit: Oh, again I say, if you want to continue this conversation I really think it should be moved. You're a mod, you can do it. Is it not your sworn duty? ;)

The jokes, mainly.

Moe Szyslak: Say, have you seen our friend? He's about this tall, wears a jacket, has no visible tattoos...
Homer Simpson: Just say he's black.

Meh. I still wouldn't have held it up as one of the better episodes in that season. There are surely better. I enjoyed the crossover with Futurama, but off the top of my head I really can't single out one other episode I really enjoyed. That joke, by the way, I find weak, especially compared to earlier classic ones.

Pfft you just don't like fun if that's true.
