*The Official Autechre Thread*
I just bought LP5 and im f**king blown away. I can't say it's like anything I've ever heard. A mind-f**k of an album.
|
ohh, yeah, Autechre is a great band, I recently got Confield, Tri Repetae++, and Draft 7.30. They are all great albums with Draft 7.30 probably being the best.
By the way the album in your little picture, Explosions in the Sky's "The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place" is one of my recent favorites. |
have all their albums but LP5 - will get it and check it out...
EITS are great! Seeing them in a couple months in fact in Reading (supporting Four Tet on their UK tour). Saw them at ATP a while ago and they blew me away. Hadn't heard their stuff before seeing them live and immediately got their albums when back. They are even better live believe it or not... |
i saw them in 2004 i think. whenever they came to Tallahassee. I cried at the end of the show. the best show ive ever sen at the Beta Bar.
|
always loved Autechre's remix of st.etiennes 'like a motorway'
|
Yeah, their earlier stuff is great but I'm still trying to get my head around Untilted. It's just crazy, in a good way I guess.
|
I'm resurrecting this thread, even though none of these people post here anymore, because Autechre is such a great fucking band and it's absolutely criminal that this old, pathetic little thread is the only thing on this site dedicated to them. I've been in a real Autechre mood for whatever reason today and have been listening to them all afternoon. For anyone unfamiliar with them, here's a great video Chris Cunningham did for one of their more accessible songs:
|
I have no Autechre and i feel that I should resign at this sad state of affairs!
|
Ive got a hell of a lot of time for Autechre. IDM at its very pinnacle as far as im concerned. Ive only got Amber and Tri Repetae though... their early stuff basically. I should really invest my time in getting hold of more

Thatd be sterling of you, thanks buddy
|
I love Chiastic Slide and I really need to acquire some more of their albums at some point.
|
I join the love of Autechre. Tri Repetae++ is fantastic. I am one of those that liked 2008's Quaristice.
|
A lot of 90s British electronic acts, although big in some circles, do go unnoticed. I'm not a huge fan of this so called IDM. (I hate that term :p:)
Lots of good stuff, but some of it can get boring as well. Autechre definitely were getting it right. Most of their material has this industrial touch to it, which I have a huge soft spot for. |
What I like about Autechre is that they can be cold, barren and mechanical but also strangely warm at the same time (often in the basslines).

Another thing I love about them is that they make music that feels very much like a three-dimensional space that I can get lost in. There's something so intricate about their songs that I really do find myself submerged in the music when I listen. |
Very dancable music. A local club plays them a lot and everyone is tripping and flowing with the music. When I'm there though, I am rarely thinking about the technical aspects of the music.

Like I said, most the people there are tripping balls! Its not interesting-it's hilarious.
|
Personally, I like their first three albums and LP5. I know this is unfashionable, but I'm just being honest. I've tried with Untilted etc, God knows I've tried but I just don't get it.
|
Aaron,
The trick is not to try and get it just let it wash all over you it'll get you in the end or buy Quaristice much more organic like their early stuff, it even has techno and house samples flitting in and out of it. My favorite is Draft 7:30 but also LP5 need to get Incunabula & Tri Repetae nah! I like them all really. |
I think a thread for Autechre deserves a BUMP!!
I've been getting into them quite a bit lately, but it's difficult to choose particular albums and songs as favourites. Songs that stand out for me include Kalpol Introl, Bike, Dael, Eutow, Lcc, Rpeg, Pir & Pen Expers. But that's just a small selection. As for albums, it's a toss up between EP7, Tri Repetae and Confield. I love the vast majority of their work though. |
Yeah LP5 is a killer mate but make sure you have all the EPS as they really show the progression they make between each album.
|
And for ****s sake lets not use that term IDM
Daft |
I dislike the term "IDM" too. I also dislike the term "Electronica". I try and avoid using genres if I can, but generally just describe Autechre as "Electronic". Super-vague, I know - but it's music you've got to hear to understand anyway so not many genres or labels will do them justice.
|
I hadn't listened to Confield in a long time and played it last night. It's not one of their best, I liked a few songs but much of it was kind of annoying me. I was reading, maybe it would have been better while doing something else. Like working and listening via headphones, maybe. Or maybe it's just not one of their best. I guess I never really took the time to get to know the album. I got it when it was new, I think, but probably shelved it after a couple of listens.
For some reason I had skipped over Chiastic Slide, LP5 and EP7 back in the day (don't know, maybe I was exploring other genres) and I've recently checked those out. Seems like that's the material I like best. Specifically LP5 and EP7. |
Confield is by the far the hardest thing they have ever done.
I LOVE IT |
I love EP7.
Confield is brilliant too. It's interesting that you call it their hardest, because I got my first few (3 or 4) Autechre albums at the same time and Confield is the one I connected with first. The Autechre album I'm having the most trouble getting into is Chiastic Slide. I'm sure I'll get into it eventually though. |
Interesting that you both connect with Confield so much. Like I said maybe it was my environment/situation each time I've played it.
|
Autechre killed my interest in IDM. In retrospect, this was probably a good thing - there's more to life than Warp Records.
|
I listened to Gantz Graf earlier, and looked up the video on YouTube...there's an HD version up. :thumb: I got this EP/DVD when it came out in 2002 and was completely blown away watching the video for the title track on my friend's big TV. For those that haven't seen it, just wait till right before the 1:00 mark. ;)
|
Gantz Graf FINEST VIDEO EVER MADE should be in the Tate Modern on repeat
|
A good song too.
|
Also I revisited Draft 7.30 just after Gantz Graf and found it very nice, considerably more soothing than Confield. Different environment, but I was reading both times so I think I was just as prone to being irritated...but I wasn't in the least. I really need to spend more time with both but those are my 'initial" reactions upon listening to them for the first time in years.

I've only heard Lp5 from them a few times when I was looking into them a bit, cause I read that was their best. Kinda different, but I didn't dislike it I remember. This was awhile ago though, so my tastes have changed a bit since. I might check it out again, or maybe Cornfields since that looks to be popular in this thread.
Nice bunch of extra's they've included with that purchase...especially the vinyl with the poster. I become more interested in vinyl everyday as I read these boards. >< |

Great thread. Got 5 Autechre LPs and counting, also seen them live, terrific stuff yet so difficult to ascertain why, their (constantly evolving) sound seems to defy logic.
'Quaristice' was my most recent, really feeling it, especially the 2nd half. 'Tri Repetae' is probably my favourite though. |

Really love the last track on 'Untilted'. 'Sublimit' I think it's called. Similar vibe with breakbeats floating around, they're at their best when they sound pretty fractious and sort of "almost beat-laden" IMHO. |
ok...can someone tell me where to start with these guys?
