There are some pretty 'heavy' lyrics and themes to some EDM. Hidden amongst the beats. Sort of a mystical side to it all. I wouldn't call that faceless.

As it's mainly "Night Out" music, there will only be a few who will want to really know who's doing what, but here it's the cool of it when all is said and done. EBM, Club, and all forms of Disco Music are pretty much meant to be enjoyed without thinking about things too much. There will be some stars and well known Producers who will set standards (and to me, even as someone who's not into it much, they are very high ones), but I thought that the whole thing about modern Dance music was that the DJ sets the scene, the one who's possibly the ultimate buyer of the music to be played and the one who has to have the ears for the best beats around at the moment.

The big difference now is the ease which one can create and publish. With a good amount of Disco and even Techno, there was at least a certain amount of studio creativity going on even if the music was faceless. Today, there's so many wanna be contenders working with low cost home studios that it seems that there's so much copying of what's happening that it has to be tiresome trying to find something fresh and exciting.

If you're into it, then you will know and get into the hip of the matter. In my opinion, everyone who's creating has an ego, but it's no longer the classic Rock and Roll stage ego many of us are used to. It's more like a feeling of accomplishment of creating a sound and trying to be great at it. Like all other genres, very few will be very well known with their own style, but this time around it's a different kind of stage.

I don't know much about it, but I appreciate it being around even if I don't listen to it much. It is getting crowded, but for a very understandable reason.

The fact that I can really enjoy and get addicted to some EDM songs while others sound generic and fall by the wayside lead me to believe it's not faceless. At least for me.

Maybe you've just not heard the right EDM tracks. Could people who think EDM is faceless post examples of said "facelesss" tracks? I'm curious!

Yeah it is only faceless to outsiders that aren't into the genre but you can pick out and recognize certain DJs by the style they use and different ways they produce.

A little off topic, but I always felt EDM to be a pretentious term. That being said, there are still plenty of interesting and unique artists classified within that field, so I don't think I can agree that it is becoming more faceless.

What's pretentious about it being called "Electronic Dance Music"? It's just a very literal description of what it is. If anything, I think it's a pretty bland name.

Could he be mixing up EDM and IDM? Which I too consider a very pretentious term.

IDM is also useless as a way of describing the music since it removes the relevant part of the acronym (electronic) and keeps the irrelevant part (dance music). It should at least be called IEM.
