Shpongle
Simon Posford and Raja Ram are both electronic music masters in their own right, so of course they're gonna be incredible together. A perfect mix of outrageous psytrance and hefty world music influences, and some gnarly flute licks. The first time I heard them, my friend played "Before the Big Bang" while we were on acid, and I was considerably blown away.
All their songs are kick-ass, though. I just pre-ordered their new album, stoked about it. |
I really like shpongle. I really like their album "Are you Shpongled?" Divine moments of truth is really good.
|
The new album is pretty bitchin
|
Once Upon The Sea of Blissful Awareness is such a lovely song!
I had a chance to see them live but couldn't go! :( Wish I would've, they seem like a wonderful group. |
Shpongle seriously didn't have its own thread prior to this?
But yeah, Ineffable Mysteries is one of my favorite albums of any genre, though I've never really heard anything they've put out that I'd consider even mediocre. The themes played on throughout that album just give it a very satisfying sense of unity in an otherwise sprawling, beautiful mess. I haven't listened to their new one yet though; I really need to get on it. |
Yeah, Posford is something of a musical genius. Hallucinogen, Shpongle, Younger Brother, The Infinity Project, Beast... no matter what project he works on, he tends to leave magic dust on it, and he's arguably the most creative musician in electronic music. Most artists could and would make an entire album out of the ideas that Posford crams into each and every track. Drug music at it's best (and, if you're too loaded, at it's most frightening too ;)).
|
I still kick myself for not going to see them back in April 2011.
|
Buy the DVD. It's brilliant and the next best thing. Not nearly as good as seeing them live I know, but still...
|
Good tune? Check. Pretty lady? Check. Impressive dancing? Check.
|
Meh. A little too flamboyant at times Shpongle is for my liking. I find myself feeling like I'm at a Mardi Gras listening to some of Shpongle's tracks.

Finally getting around to listening to Museum Of Consciousness and I'm really enjoying it, definitely more than Ineffable Mysteries From Shpongleland.
|
It's an interesting album. I adored it the first few times I heard it and, though I still like it a lot, I think it's probably the weakest Shpongle album. But again, I still think it's great. And I'm pleased it's different to the other albums.
|
I love Shpongle!
|
|
Yeah I'm getting into them. First I downloaded Tales of the Inexpressible, was incredibly impressed, then downloaded the rest of their discography. Man I can see a bunch of different colours in my head while listening to them. Ineffable Mysteries of Shpongleland and Nothing Lasts... But Nothing is Lost takes the biggest pieces of the cake for me. Listening to Museums of Consciousness as I type, so far so good.
Kind of surprised I never heard of these guys before. |

Intereresting, fun and relaxed interview with Simon Posford and Raja Ram - the musicians behind the brilliant Shpongle:
And another, with Raja Ram on his own: |
I clicked the auto-generated link to Simon Posford in the post above (which gives info from Wikipedia) and it states that Simon Posford has toured India twice. But he hasn't. He says as much in the interview in the same post above.
Just goes to show, Wikipedia isn't always reliable. Oh well. Let's have a tune. Ineffable Mysteries: |
Shpongle -DMT (Hallucinogen Remix)
Gorgeous video to the next one. Shpongle - Around The World In A Tea Daze (Ott Remix) |
This is many folks favourite Shpongle track. It's made for drugs. So trippy.
Divine Moments Of Truth But this is my personal favourite. It's a brooding masterpiece, full of nuance and subtlety. Behind Closed Eyelids |
When Shall I Be Free + The Stamen Of The Shamen
|
Walking Backwards Through The Cosmic Mirror

Shpongleyes

Instructions for maximum enjoyment: Read up on the Higgs boson particle, ingest powerful hallucinogenic agent, close eyes, press play, enjoy the pretty shapes in your head :D
The God Particle |
Once Upon The Sea Of Blissful Awareness (Esionjim Remix)
   |
I can't bring myself to listen to this band because their name and graphics are terrible.
|
Thoughts, especially silly and creative thoughts, can be fun to chase and explore, but conditional thoughts are best ignored. I won't listen to this because it's generic, or because it's not cutting edge enough, or because it's not authentic enough, or because it's popular, or because it's too folky, or because the lead singer is a paedo, or because they have a silly name, those kinda thoughts are foolish and only prevent you from enjoying music. They cut the menu in half. I know because I thought like that for a loooong, long time. :(
I'm wasting my breath here, I know, everyone must come to this realisation in their own time, but I'm gonna say it anyway, life is much sweeter when you don't get entangled in conditional thoughts, when the only reason you don't like something is simply because you don't like it. :) |
But enough of my babbling, time for another tune. Love the intro to this one describing smoking DMT, it sounds quite unsettling when you're tripping.
A New Way To Say Hooray! |
My music plate is constantly overflowing, so thoughts like this are really just a way of weeding through what I want or don't want to listen to, since I can't listen to everything. I could have kept that thought to myself, yes, or perhaps found a thread discussing whether artist names or album covers affect my decision to listen to something, which I'm pretty sure exists.
|
No need to explain. Ignore my babbling. I discriminated against your post (your view) and then waxed on about non-discrimination. haha. I'm but a fool. :)
|
Arguably the best name for a track ever. It stinks of Zen.
Nothing Is Something Worth Doing |
I read in a Simon Posford interview that this track is based on a genuine dimethyltryptamine (DMT) trip he experienced. I've posted the track before, but the video to this one is really good, and matches the vibe of the drug:
Divine Moments of Truth (DMT) |
One of my favourite tunes of all time, electronic or otherwise. A must play when you're tripping. The intro gets me every time. Sounds like magic descending from the heavens and saturating your every sinew, your very marrow. Takes me away every time. It's mystical genius:
Ineffable Mysteries |
Quote:
I had no idea he had that many projects! I knew about Shpongle, Younger Brother, and Hallucinogen. Looks like I got some new stuff to listen to. |
Simon Posford has easily been one of the artists that has influenced me most in my own music.
|
^ Nice to meet another Posford fan. :) I adore the man and consider him the Beethoven of electronica.
You should also check out 'Purple Om' - his first electronic band which, though lacking in production value, demonstrate that famous Posford touch. Oh and check out 'Celtic Cross' which he collaborated with - a brilliant act with a very original sound. Celtic Cross - Mundis Imaginalus He's also collaborated with: Anubis, Audio Chemistry, Axis Mundi, Baba G, Beast, Binah, DSP, Dub Trees, Flight, Fly Agaric, Gargoyles, Growlmonizer, Industrical Suicide Tribe, Infernal Machine, Mandala, Metal Sharon, The Mystery Of The Yeti, Nomads Of Dub, North Central Positronics, Ott, Psykov, Subkha, Twisted Allstars and Frederic Holyszewski. And has even collaborated with David Gilmore: Alan Parsons/Simon Posford/David Gilmore - Return To Tunguska |
One of the weirdist bands I have ever come across.
