Yeah saw the J2K tune. Big.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-06-2017 12:14 PM

new Skepta EP

not bad. more and more american hip-hop influence on his style with every release. fair play to him i suppose as he's still putting out decent stuff.

Cuthbert 11-07-2017 12:25 AM

Just listened. It's OK, but I'm really not sure what the point of this release is. Just feels a bit 'meh'.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-07-2017 10:41 AM

agree. much more excited for a new JME project than I am for something from Skep.

Cuthbert 11-08-2017 07:38 AM

Q, are you aware of the Logan Sama thing atm?
Been kicked off the BBC for banterish tweets he made three ****ing years ago. Somebody obviously kept the screenshots of the tweets and informed the BBC. I actually got a bit mad reading it.

Cuthbert 11-08-2017 07:51 AM

Skeamz (producer, really nice guy) talking sense on Twitter:

Quote:

Whichever lowlife reported @djlogansama 's old tweets to the BBC is an idiot . Let's be honest . When you get sum1 sacked that's not jus a reputation knock but uve also fucked with sum1s livelihood . I hope he gets back into work as soon as .
Quote:

Why is Logan Sama apologising to these online black activists ? These people don't do shit for their own communities let alone other people of the same race . Logan has put on more people of colour than anyone else tbh
Quote:

I'm seeing some "black Twitter" people saying they want apologies n shit ..... but these are the same lot who make "white people" stereotypes on a regs . Fuck this I'm team @djlogansama
Quote:

Funny how at the time no one got offended ... two two's he gets a job at BBC then all of a sudden everyone's offended ... piss off mate .
Quote:

?? Have u ever cussed a white girl for any reason ? But used the fact she's white as the reason behind it ? I see this shit all the time on the timeline . Yet when a white guy does it , he's wrong ?
Quote:

It's not like man randomly tweeted some **** about dead black tings ... he's tweeting his mates having convos with his mates like mates do . I don't care tbh
Quote:

All these people attacking me on Twitter are probably the same ones who tweet about white girls not being able to cook .... but I guess that's different sumhow ?

do you know what the tweets were? cant find them. social media is mad, seems like something along these lines is popping up every other week. can't say anything without making someone mad.

Yeah, years old tweets that were clearly tongue in cheek jokes - https://twitter.com/industry_racism/...91915249512448

Crybullies reporting him and cost him his job. Also great news for young black Grime MCs who now have one less platform to help them achieve success thanks to all this.

If you know who Merky Ace is check out his Twitter page he's making some good points about that.

Novelist album out on Friday.

Godfather 2 out 25th May. Wish Wiley wouldn't announce them so early, end up waiting for ages.

Novelist: Novelist Guy review – young grime star shows his social conscience
Quote:

The true test of whether a scene has a lifespan is to look at the new crop of talent following the greats. Grime might have had a mainstream moment, but what’s next? The answer for many fans comes in the form of 21-year-old Novelist, the south London MC who fondly bought us Lewisham McDeez as part of grime crew the Square, a jubilant homage to a local landmark. This introspective offering takes us through his frustrations with industry obstacles, black masculinity and our current political moment. At its best, with punchy tracks such as Afro Pick, he reminds us that he’s not divorced from the young people you might be reading about in the news: “Afro pick in my hair / Look but I don’t recommend you stare … I do what I do for the young youth from back in the day when I ran for the mayor,” touches on his brief stint as former deputy young mayor of Lewisham. His politically confrontational moments are the best – on Stop Killing the Mandem he furiously repeats the title, taken from a sign that went viral when he held it up at a 2016 Black Lives Matter protest in London, 16 times before we even hear him rap.
Sounds like it's shit.

Will get anyway.

Akai 04-13-2018 06:48 AM

Just another pseudo-intellectual MC who thinks he knows whats best for everyone and anything.

Beat selection sounds OK.

His spitting lets him down a bit. Imagine what Dizzee would sound like over some of these instrumentals.

Hard as usual.

some of my favourite hip hop artists regularly discuss topics that i disagree with

not sure why that should affect quality

Content affects quality. I can't listen to Eminem rapping about guy's balls or whatever it is.

And he won't be saying anything we haven't heard a million times before from much better rappers than him.

Just comes across as forced.

Some folk are easily triggered. Music is supposed to be a fun and safe thing to enjoy.

ehh agree to disagree i suppose. i can understand it if it feels forced though, i just don’t think that’s really the case here.

listened to the first half of the project, it’s ok. a few nice tracks a few not so nice cuts. looking like it will go down as an average release, not really worth going out of the way to hear if you aren’t a huge fan. will give it some more time though.

reheaded 04-13-2018 08:07 PM

I think I'm gonna have to let that Novelist album settle inside me for a little bit. Still have to figure out whether I actually think it's nothing more than decent or if I'm just annoyed there's nothing on there like 1 Sec.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 04-17-2018 09:49 AM

afro pick is a big chune and one of the best tracks ive heard this year

too bad the rest of the album doesnt live up to that

Cuthbert 04-17-2018 12:33 PM

Looking forward to Godfather 2, but dunno if it will live up to the first one.

Wish Wiley had better quality control. I saw the track list for G2 and it has 20 tracks, so a few will be duds I reckon - https://store.hmv.com/music/cd/godfather-ii

Off the Radar pt 2 sounds promising. Pt 1 was immense. If Wiley was just a bit better at picking tracks, he'd have like 3 or 4 really top notch albums.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 04-17-2018 12:41 PM

his last album was an absolute belter so i’m hoping for something solid although i won’t be surprised if it doesn’t live up to it

It looks more of the same, going by the t/l and features. So should be good. I just hope with 20 tracks there isn't a dud in there.

I was really pleased to see the reviews for G1, it was a strong album with no big mistakes on it, I knew he had it in him to do something that good. Snakes & Ladders was great too.

Have you ever heard Race Against Time?

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 05-05-2018 10:09 AM

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 05-08-2018 09:36 AM

monkey man recommend me some sets

and if by chance you know where to locate them and happened to slip a download link or two into my PM’s i would not complain.

Cuthbert 05-08-2018 10:22 AM

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qReDbo2fX4Q

That is good.

Cuthbert 05-08-2018 02:15 PM

It's not on YouTube now but the Roll Deep Conflict DVD is like the holy grail of sets for me. On this set, there is:

Dizzee
Wiley
D Double E
Sharky Major
Crazy Titch
Tinchy Stryder
God's Gift

It's legendary, I spent about 7 or 8 years tracking it down only for it to go. If you type Titch vs Dizzee into YouTube you'll see the 'fight'. A great set such a shame its gone.

It's possible I've got the audio on a hard drive somewhere. I also put some sets on my YouTube channel a while back I'll link them up.

I've definitely got F Radio 3 and 5 on disc somewhere in full studio quality so I can get you those.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 05-13-2018 06:26 AM

given godfather 2 a couple days and im still not sure what to say

a few very good tracks but much like on the previous project i really don’t care for when it gets slowed down with pseudo love making romantic tracks. just not really what i go to grime for and i don’t think Wiley does that great of a job with them. i can only remember there being one on his last album but there are multiple on this and with it being such a short album it seems like it overruns the project.

Cuthbert 05-13-2018 08:41 AM

I don't mind his slower, more mellow tracks.

Sounds like he went a bit 'pop' on this.

Born in the Cold/Humble Pie/To be Continued/Grime Wave - great.

But I doubt they are like that.

I need to get the album. But sounds like it's not better than last year's. Was always going to be tough to top that. I had wondered if it would live up to it after hearing the single with JME which was just OK. Not as good as the singles from G1.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 05-13-2018 09:25 AM

it's still an ok record, it's just like you mentioned, he had a huge record to follow up.

Cuthbert 05-14-2018 02:22 PM

You got then sets yet Q?

You really should get F Radio 3 & 5.

These two were sick but they fell out really quickly.

Frownland 05-14-2018 02:32 PM

Been bumping Trim today. Dope ****, not what I was expecting at all.

What you been listening to?

Trim is unique. More experimental, can be hit and miss but when he's good he is excellent. And he is great on sets too.

Tweedle Dee
Set Off
Monkey
Kanye West
I Am

Good tracks.

Frownland 05-14-2018 02:50 PM

Sets=DJ sets?

I listened to 1-800 Dinosaur Presents. Loved the ambient aspect of it. I wanna call it cloud grime.

DJ plays instrumentals and mixes them, MCs take turns to spit a bar, live music. That video I just posted above is a set.

Nice. How'd you'd find it?

You might like Visionist/Terror Danjah.

Found it on the RYM charts. I'll check those two out for sure. I'm not opposed to grime, I just never get around to checking it out. Recs welcome.

They are producers so you may want vocals of their stuff. Instrumental Grime releases are more aimed at MCs and DJs, are not as structured as Dubstep is.

You seem like you like more experimental stuff that's why I suggested those guys.

Good release. If you liked the Jorja Smith track with Preditah you should like this. The Undeniable album (1st one) is good too, as is Dark Crawler.

Trim did a vocal of Dark Crawler it's on that album. All on that bandcamp link.
