Guys, this isn't a novelty hit from nowhere. He's had six solo number one hits in Korea since 2000 (including this one) and many more with features (not that I knew about him before GS.) The Korean government banned his first few albums from being sold to anyone under 19 because they were so explicit yet selling so well, and he wrote the theme song for the world cup when it was in Seoul.

He's been a powerful force in the industry for a long time. It just took him until the age of the internet for the west to know about him,and given his international celebrity, I don't think America's done with him for a few more hits, Korea not for a few more decades. XD

Props for retiring GS, though. I get why. The lyrics make fun of half of the people listening to it.

Don't underestimate America's ability to ignore anything outside of America. We ignored T-Rex. We ignored Blur and Oasis. We ignored the Kinks. Most people in America don't even know that the French and Indian War was part of a larger war between pretty much all of Europe spanning the whole world. America's narcissism is great and terrible to behold.

So what, that's in Korea.
The band that made Macarena made 10 albums.
Chumbawumba released 17 albums between 1986 & 2012

Making music before or after your big hit doesn't mean people listen to it.

It's not house
It's K-Pop
Everyone says they "hate it" but secretly they do their guilty pleasures to it

My guilty pleasure is Wilco. Far from Psy.

I think most of that was because they were barred from entering the country at the peak of their career. After that happened they kind of stopped bothering to attempt to break over there.
