I think I would embrace Gangnam style whilst taking ecstasy, shit happens.

Rjinn 11-14-2012 09:32 AM

Insecure about dancing more like it.

Probably wouldn't go past "this is ridiculous" sort of laugh. Unless I'm drunk and tripping at the same time as well.

Pages 2-4 of this thread are bizarrely unintelligible.

JustJunMC 11-15-2012 04:24 PM

The man's a genius

he's breaking youtube records

whether you like the song or not, he is doing something right

JustJunMC 11-15-2012 04:26 PM

I heard about this song on the internet

I doubt he is being pushed by the music illuminati

He's not a white or black person, which is whom the illuminati generally push

He just got amazingly popular and my opinion it is due to how he marketed to Asia

Not in my experience, no. Now a room full of people giving each other backrubs, on the other hand...

Freebase Dali 11-15-2012 06:57 PM

I was under the impression that the whole Gangnam thing was about the dance, and had nothing to do with the music. This is according to numerous adolescents throughout the internet, so I took their word for it, considering the factors.

Let me know if I'm mistaken.
Actually, don't. I'd prefer it to not be about the music...

JustJunMC 11-15-2012 10:00 PM

The song is about having a high class style and swagger

but he delivered the material comically

The Bullet 11-16-2012 12:22 AM

Slightly off-topic, but I now know what you see right before you die...

No you're wrong again, he said in an interview that it has no meaning.

On a side note, this thread is awful and I couldn't give a fuck how many views it has. I'm also not insecure about my music taste as I quite happily love Lady Gaga.

There's really nothing wrong with that.

I've never heard of anybody being insecure about their music taste tbh.

You've never met anyone who feels the need to prove how hip or underground they are every 5 minutes?

I wish I were you.

Its electronic music mixed with Korean rap

and Gangnam district is a high class wealthy and stylish area, hence him saying "GANGNAM STYLE" and he is also poking fun at the posers and wannabes of the Gangnam Style, so I dont get where you say it has no meaning... it is one of the reasons the video is so comical

I like the song and I can see why its popular and many people like the song and he makes a lot of money off of youtube and other TV media, radio, and sales of the actual song

And the numbers matter because he is shattering records and has the most liked video in youtube history and I think his one video has more plays than all of Lady Gaga's music videos

derek 11-21-2012 11:27 PM

the song is about women of the affluent area of Gangnam in Seoul on how they are prim and proper during the day , but go wild and crazy at night. he is just making fun of that. the song is electro pop/house category, so it does belong in this forum.

Kajamaz 11-29-2012 07:31 AM

The songs okish but the video made it more popular due to the... bizarity...

Well you're about one of the only people who have been educated on this, I'm pretty much sure people don't listen to this because they like mocking Gangnam district. They like the song because the world is full of morons and everyone else likes it, basically.

derek 11-30-2012 06:41 PM

GS won as best music video of the year at the Mnet Music Awards last nite...he performed it last nite too.

derek 01-13-2013 12:31 AM

Psy said that he has officially retired the song...btw, the dude just bought a condo in Los Angeles and it appears he is working with some music producers in LA.

Freebase Dali 01-13-2013 01:19 AM

Is this still a thing?
This is almost the equivalent of Honey Boo Boo being popular.

How does society end up at this point?

Bad novelty records that sell by the truckload have been around since the dawn of time, I wouldn't read too much into it.

He can work with as many producers as he likes, he's yesterdays news. Those people that did like that song liked exactly that .. the song.

I doubt they give 2 shits if the guy singing it has another another out. When was the last time someone had 2 novelty hits in a row? I can't think of any and if there is some people who have I bet it'll be a really short list.

Gangnam Style was nothing more than The Macarena for 2012. This guy won't be troubling the music scene or the charts again.

I'll give you the The Macarena for 2012 part only for the dance of it but as far as troubling the music scene. The difference is he's more talented than just a one hit wonder. He has had five albums released already. I highly doubt that he will just going to drift off now that he has all the popularity from Gangnam Style. For the people that don't like him he will be sticking around like an annoying gnat.

I look at it this way. There are times I listen to the most ghetto of rap music strictly for the lulz. Its not something you can take for more than a few minutes but you gotta have fun every once in awhile. I think America is having its fun and soon this will disappear.

I must admit I had some fun with that new one "Right Now". I didn't know he had any other music cus I never cared enough to look into it.

He may be more talented than a lot of one-hit wonders, but I feel that some of the recent controversy about "Dear American" has cooled off a lot of interest in him Stateside to the point where he will only be mentioned in reviews on 2012 in my opinion. Whatever his level of talent, he made it big enough with a no-brainer of a song that The US will possibly just shove him off of the Pop Culture map even if there was a story behind the hit - always happens. As for the rest of the world, we'll see.

"Who wants Yesterday's Papers"...sorry, had to say that!

Even Weird Al, the modern king of the Parody/Novelty record in the US usually had to wait until the next first single off an album to make a hit. It's all in the timing - make big with well-timed Parody hit, bring out the album that will hit for a couple of weeks, release second smaller single, wait a year or two until you know most people have forgotten about you, repeat reminding them that there is another parody record by Weird Al.

Key 01-15-2013 12:36 PM

I personally find it to be very catchy and easy to like, nothing wrong with that. He performed it live on New Years, and I thought that the performance with MC Hammer was pretty damn cool.

I have no problem if this song stays a hit, it's obviously very popular considering it's the first video on Youtube to hit 1 billion views.

Screen13 01-15-2013 12:45 PM

Yeah, I heard about the mash-up performance. Let's just say this - The Billion View Video was at least Psy's fluke worldwide smash instead of Rebecca Black's "Friday." Black cornered herself with that pile-up of garbage while at least Psy can at least continue being a personality somewhere with at least some talent.

Oooo I didn't know about the "Dear American" song stuff. I had to look it up. :yikes: Whatever he does next people will be comparing it to gangnam style which is a shame but at least he will be referred as the gangnam style guy and anyone that had interest will check out his next projects even if they don't like it just because of the song. He'll be able to ride the fame from it.

Now this guy is more of a Novelty hit and will probably only have this to his name.

The Bullet 01-15-2013 04:33 PM

Guys, this isn't a novelty hit from nowhere. He's had six solo number one hits in Korea since 2000 (including this one) and many more with features (not that I knew about him before GS.) The Korean government banned his first few albums from being sold to anyone under 19 because they were so explicit yet selling so well, and he wrote the theme song for the world cup when it was in Seoul.

He's been a powerful force in the industry for a long time. It just took him until the age of the internet for the west to know about him,and given his international celebrity, I don't think America's done with him for a few more hits, Korea not for a few more decades. XD

Props for retiring GS, though. I get why. The lyrics make fun of half of the people listening to it.

Don't underestimate America's ability to ignore anything outside of America. We ignored T-Rex. We ignored Blur and Oasis. We ignored the Kinks. Most people in America don't even know that the French and Indian War was part of a larger war between pretty much all of Europe spanning the whole world. America's narcissism is great and terrible to behold.

So what, that's in Korea.
The band that made Macarena made 10 albums.
Chumbawumba released 17 albums between 1986 & 2012

Making music before or after your big hit doesn't mean people listen to it.

It's K-Pop
Everyone says they "hate it" but secretly they do their guilty pleasures to it

I think most of that was because they were barred from entering the country at the peak of their career. After that happened they kind of stopped bothering to attempt to break over there.

Insane Guest 01-20-2013 02:17 PM

I just realized the song is in Korean...
