Loscil
I've been getting deeper into ambient electronica lately; Well, I should say that I've been trying to get into it more, but nothing that I seem to come across manages to impress me more than Loscil, AKA Scott Morgan, who, if nothing else, definitely merits his own thread.
His albums, at least as far as I'm aware, all respectively deal with a central concept. For instance Plume conveys the theme of billowing smoke; Submerse deals with submarines and the concepts of exploring the ocean depths; Endless Falls deals with rain, et al. What is extraordinary about this is that there are a million and one ways to convey a musical concept in a quasi-new age way and make it sound trite and cliched, but Loscil does it with great finesse, and his albums tend to be replete with sonic micro-details that draw in the listener and provide an enveloping listening experience. I wish I could find more artists that I felt were on par with him, but for now I'm satisfied with the fact that I still have a few albums of his to acquire.
