I am not hugely into dance music, but I have always had a soft spot for the Chemical Brothers - there's always been an atmosphere to their albums that just clicks perfectly well for me - plus I love some of the sounds they use in their vocal tracks as well as their instrumentals - they quite consistently turn in great albums from start to finish with very few "dud" tracks in my humble opinion.

I can't understand why their last album was so bad. A major letdown. I was hoping a couple of listens at a later date might have swayed me but it just doesn't grab me at all.

adidasss 02-25-2009 04:26 PM

Not very impressed. They're definitely on a downward spiral creatively.

scottsy 02-26-2009 09:53 PM

I must admit to not bothering with their most recent release... I saw the Salmon Dance video on TV and it looked kinda, how do you say it? Childish? The whole song didn't reek of the joyous creativity of such albums as Dig Your Own Hole or Surrender.... a real bloody shame actually, because the afformentioned albums are darn good, and still regular listens for me...

Indeed Cowgirl does. Hands down.

I heard of this band before. Which album should I start with?

simonelli 04-15-2009 05:18 PM

I love the Chemical Brothers. i'd say Star Guitar is my favorite song by them.

WWWP 04-17-2009 12:02 PM

The time has come to.....

GALVANIZE!

My finger is on the button.

Yeah, none of their later albums have come close to the first three in creativity, and it is quite disappointing. :(

I enjoy Push the Button a fair amount, but Galvanize is not one of my favorites from it (even if it might be fun in a party setting). What about songs like "Hold Tight London" and "Close Your Eyes" though? I thought those came really close to achieving that great dreamy vibe they had on parts of Surrender!

Not that you're still waiting for an answer to this, lol, but definitely start with Dig Your Own Hole. That's the kind of album that converts people to electronica.

scottsy 12-25-2009 05:32 PM

Agreed! Dig Your Own Hole = one great, easily accessible, good for people new to the genre of electronica album. Not only that it's just a really great album in its own right.

FETCHER. 12-26-2009 07:48 AM

I've heard of them. But never listened to any of their music. Any album recs/personal favourites?

scottsy 12-26-2009 03:26 PM

Dig Your Own Hole or Surrender from their late 90s heydays.... definitely their two best albums as far as I am concerned! Come With Us is pretty good too...

Dieselboy 12-26-2009 05:17 PM

For singles it doesn't get much better than this song...even though I think it's already been linked in this thread...who cares...it's worth linking again and again ><
Chemical Brothers - Galvanize

The album it appears on, Push The Button, is pretty decent as well as a whole.

Also, as Scottsy said, Dig Your Own Whole is great. You've probably heard this song on that album, in some place or other, and maybe didn't know it was them:
Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats

Best place to start might be their Brotherhood double CD from last year though. The 1st disc is a greatest hits with all their really strong tracks, including the newer ones as well.

FETCHER. 12-27-2009 05:06 AM

I recoqnise Galvanize straight away. I dunno what from though, most likely an advert! I like them! Thank you! :D

scottsy 12-27-2009 07:52 AM

I think I am going to have to at least listen to Dig Your Own Hole and Surrender soon... I'm totally missing their sound right now... Might even have to put Come With Us on my Mp3 player too... I still remember that as being a good quality listen, especially Star Guitar, really sweet little instrumental / minimal vocal track.

FETCHER. 12-27-2009 08:14 AM

I've been listening to Brotherhood on spotify, they're much better than I originally thought they would be... :D

Ronnie Jane Devo 12-29-2009 05:46 AM

Here's a terrific song from their first album:

FETCHER. 12-29-2009 09:42 AM

I've been listening to them on spotify, I recoqnise actual loads of their music, it's like faithless a band you don't know, but actually do! :)

scottsy 12-29-2009 11:20 AM

Yeah, quite alot of their music has kinda filtered out into all sorts of settings, and into our heads, methinks! It's a good thing that all of it is actually quite good!

FETCHER. 12-29-2009 11:23 AM

It like before I listened to justice I had no idea who they were and now I hear them on adverts on tv all the time! must be that kind of idea! :)

Mojo 12-30-2009 08:11 AM

I have We Are The Night, Push the Button, and Dig Your Own Hole but i love some Chemical Brothers when im in the right mood. Of the others, are there any im really missing out on?

Exit Planet Dust the debut. I thought We Are The Night was terrible though. Parts of Surrender are really good too Especially Out Of Control with New Order's Sumner on vocals and guitar duty.

Mojo 12-30-2009 08:52 AM

Oh i have the debut as well, my bad. I was thinking there should have been another one when i made my last post because i seem to remember i wasnt missing too many Chemical Brothers records. I havent really given We Are The Night a chance yet to be honest but i picked it up for 75p so i wont be complaining even if i hate it!

Ronnie Jane Devo 01-01-2010 10:21 PM

Well let's just say they won't be dragging out any survivors.

FETCHER. 01-01-2010 10:25 PM

You are drunkkk. Will you hold any regrets tomorrow :D?

Ronnie Jane Devo 01-01-2010 10:28 PM

Nah, I'm a good boy. I know when to stop.

wickedlk 06-10-2010 12:38 PM

Okay, so album number 7 is here. 'Further' had no collaborations (yay!) or any poppy vocals and in my view is a much more positive album than previous. Apart from 'Snow' which hurts my ears during the intro I find the record a pretty easy listen with a good, natural flow.

Anyone else cared to listen yet? I'm interested in what others think as I've always found the Chemical Bros. very hit and miss.

Favourite Tune

IndiElectronica 06-18-2010 07:28 AM

further has no huge singles... but still a solid album, i like first song best...

Zer0 06-20-2010 04:00 PM

I'm kinda on the fence about getting the new Chemical Brothers album. I might just check out a few songs now to see if i like.

EDIT: I listened to Swoon and Escape Velocity on youtube. Swoon is a bit meh, that main repetitive synth line gets on my nerves a bit. Escape Velocity is kinda cool though. It builds slowly at the start and then BAM! It turns into a classic beat-heavy Chemical Brothers tune. I might check out the album.

bend the fend 06-21-2010 09:44 AM

I swear most he songs on the cd galvanise isnt even by chemical for example the best song on that cd is believe but that is made by q tip so why dont they make there own music.

Lol, i'm guessing you're referring to the album Push The Button. 'Believe' was not made by Q-Tip, he had absolutely nothing to do with that song. That song was made and produced by The Chemical Brothers and features guest vocals from Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke. Q-Tip only did guest vocals on the song 'Galvanize' and in that song The Chemical Brothers wrote the lyrics and wrote and produced the music. So yes they do make their own music.

adidasss 06-21-2010 02:30 PM

Lol, mega pwnage.

Anyhow, I'll probably get the new album at some point, even if I feel they're kinda passé...

Mp3s get tagged incorrectly quite a lot, including song names and even artist, by the looks of things the album you have was tagged pretty badly. This will give you a better idea of the album details
Push the Button (The Chemical Brothers album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
I have the album on CD and in the booklet it shows exactly who does what. Many electronic artists like The Chemical Brothers feature guest vocalists or collaborators a lot of the time, but the music is always created and produced by the album artist, otherwise it would just be a Various Artists compilation.

Thanks for the complement on the avatar though :)

scottsy 06-23-2010 10:03 PM

WOW! Did not even know a new Chemical Brothers album had been released... I've gotta look into that... they're not the most amazing band to ever cross my radar or anything, but their stuff is good and fairly entertaining, always makes for at least some fairly fun background party music... I pretty much enjoy their work... aside from that Salmon Dance song they did, which admittedly had to be a low point for them...

IndiElectronica 06-24-2010 08:15 AM

i consider them REQUIRED listening... though they have some naff songs for sure... they are easily one of the best live groups around now too... have seen them 2-3 times at a festival with 50k plus people watching them and always a super, super show....
