Seven Lions. Greatest producer at the moment?

Who would be your guys' picks?

Cool thread thanks

misspoptart 12-28-2012 03:13 AM

Does anyone like Magnetic Man or know anything about them? Wiki says they are a "dubstep trio," but their songs don't sound like any of these recommendations, which leads me to believe they are either a) sh*t or b) not really dubstep.

Anyway, I like them (and a lot of other so-called sh*t), so if anyone knows anything similar, I'd love to get in on it.

Cuthbert 12-30-2012 10:43 PM

Used to listen to Dubstep a lot when I was younger, nice thread. Mainly stuff like Benga, Skream, Mala... it was mostly the more tribal, mellowed out stuff. I've never really liked the new, bassy stuff, apart from some exceptions.

What do you mean by 'not really Dubstep'?

From what I've heard from them, which is admittedly not much as I don't follow Dubstep anymore, they are like the Backstreet Boys of Dubstep. I've heard the collabs with P-Money but didn't like them. I can recommend a bunch of stuff similar to those vocals if you liked them but if you want instrumentals in the same vein then I don't know of much, sorry.

If anyone is bothered (probably not :o:) and you're a fan of Dubstep, it might be worth delving into instrumental Grime as well because both Dubstep and Grime developed from Garage at the same time, in the same place and overlap each other and in the early days (pre-2006) were very, very similar. I have very good knowledge of instrumental Grime from 2002ish up until last year. I will post the stuff that I think people would like based on what has been posted in the thread as the older stuff might be a bit too 'pots and pans' if you get me. I see Vanilla has already posted some Plastician :). Are you guys familiar with Terror Danjah? I think Dubstep fans would definitely like Rude Kid's stuff if you haven't heard of him already:

Rude Kid - Electric Instrumental (OFFICIAL) - YouTube

Rude Kid - Screwdriver INSTANT DROP - YouTube

Rude Kid - Spring (Instrumental) - YouTube

Rude Kid - Rain Drops - YouTube

The legend that is Maniac, he is in prison now but while he was around he was (and still is) widely regarded as the best Grime producer, his style is very unique:

Maniac - Captain Instrumental - YouTube

Maniac - Gunslap (New Age Grime)(*NEW*) - YouTube

Maniac - Devil vs Saltfish (High Quality) - YouTube

Maniac - Liquid Organ [Radio Clip] - YouTube

Has Sukh Knight been posted yet? I don't follow Dubstep anymore but always have time for Sukh Knight, his beats are seriously good:

Sukh Knight - Hands In Your Pockets Feat Jahcoozi - YouTube

Sukh Knight - Beneath Your Blouse - YouTube

One of the best current Grime producers (has done what I would call modern 'wobbly' Dubstep too but I prefer his fresher, skippier Garage influenced style), Preditah:

Preditah - Red Bull - YouTube

Preditah - Street Fighter [Instrumental] (Unreleased) - YouTube

I will stop spamming the thread now :o:

I though Magnetic Man could be in a different genre or sub-genre of dubstep, I don't know. I'm not that familiar with dubstep and I don't really have a good understanding of what dubstep sounds like, and the term has been thrown around a lot in recent times, especially as some dubstep sounds are popular with mainstream audiences. It is my understanding that there is a kind of "true" dubstep that is different from the poppy stuff I've heard.

So...they are really popular with teenage girls? Hahaha that's funny. My boyfriend has this group of guy friends who think they are so tough listening to Magnetic Man hahaha.

I do like the stuff with vocals, I'll take your recommendations!! And the spam is also good. Mmm...spam.

Yeah I get what you're saying, it's true that it's become popular recently so there are loads of examples of it being used on more 'commercial' songs, an example of what I used to listen to and would consider to be Dubstep would be something like:

Dubstep allstars vol. 1 mixed by Dj Hatcha - YouTube

This is very, very good ^ Instrumental mix though, so may get tedious if you're new to it. I have an old mix on disc somewhere from about 2004, got some nice stuff on so I may upload it.

:D

Sort of yeah, I would just say it's like the equivalent of Eminem being Hip-Hop, he would be by definition I guess, but nowadays there are better examples that are more unknown. But if you like it you like it, Katy on a Mission would probably be considered 'pop' but I fhucking love that (if you haven't heard it Youtube it but if you're familiar with Magnetic Man I assume you have heard it ;) ).

Here are some vocals, there's a bit of variety I hope you like them:

Roachee - SITH Lord - No Hats No Hoods Records - YouTube

Breakage feat Donaeo - Speechless (out 22nd march) - YouTube

P Money - Left the Room (Prod. Sukh Knight) - YouTube

Classic ^

Durrty Goodz - Take Back The Scene - YouTube

This whole 'Axiom' EP has very good vocals, some good concept tracks on there too ^

Breakage ft Newham Generals - Hard - YouTube

True Tiger - Slang Like This - YouTube

Good concept ^

misspoptart 12-31-2012 09:12 AM

Looks like I have a busy couple of days ahead of me...;) Thanks for everything so far! I hope sooner or later Vanilla comes in and offers her two cents, too.

:D

Cuthbert 01-01-2013 05:17 PM

Vanilla we want your expertise in the thread please :(

EDIT - oh hai that rhymed, lol.

Face 01-01-2013 06:03 PM

Dubstep is all about the drop and being badass, every single time. But drum and bass has drops and......goes places.

Drum n bass> dubstep.

Pendulumn
Matrix and futurebound
Subfocus
Netsky
Spor

Cuthbert 01-01-2013 07:29 PM

Pretty much every single DnB track has the same drum pattern though. There is more variety in Dubstep.

I don't like DnB MC's either.

Dubstep only being about the drop is arguable too, the new stuff is, but Midnight Request Line, Colourful, Night, Nine Samurai... All way more chilled and err... 'undroppy' (is that even a word?)

I'm sure you understand what I am trying to say anyway.

misspoptart 01-10-2013 04:01 AM

So Fluffy K, I've been a bit busy the past couple of days at work (where I do my music bantering), and I've finally gotten around to listening to some of the tracks you posted. Of the first round, I'd have to say I liked "Beneath Your Blouse" by Sukh Knight the best. Great, great track. Although I usually like vocals with dubstep, the beat does so well on its own!!

I wasn't really into Maniac or Rude Kid. How did Maniac get in prison?

Didn't see this post sorry.

It's a high profile case - BBC News - Music pair jailed over death plot

TL;DR - He got a girl pregnant, when she decided to keep the baby, he and a friend decided to ambush her and kill her so that she couldn't have the baby as he was just about to start university (only 18 at the time.)

That's what the media say anyway. He is a knob, but he is also extremely talented. This is the Nike track he did:

I came into the thread to post this: https://soundcloud.com/rudekidmusic/...at-the-hell-ep

Out Feb 11th. I think some of you on here would like this.

Cuthbert 01-17-2013 10:47 PM

Fucking hell, I totally forgot about this tune:

Merky Ace - Reason - YouTube

Fucked.

Scarlett O'Hara 02-22-2013 09:43 PM

Here is some post-dubstep. It just touches on certain elements of dubstep but isn't straight dubstep as it's defined.

IsotopeBill 02-27-2013 05:00 AM

Mount Kimbie is ace!! Nice post, never thought of them being post-dubstep but it makes sense. One of my favourites is "50 Mile View".

Unrelenting 03-18-2013 08:33 AM

On the subject of post dubstep, see if these tickle your fancy

Holy Other - (W)here - YouTube

Vessel - Stillborn Dub - YouTube

Scarlett O'Hara 03-18-2013 03:40 PM

I really enjoyed the Holy One's track. Vessel was creepy, but I liked the church-like element to it. You really can imagine a dystopian society with religious control. Well I can anyway.

Cuthbert 03-22-2013 12:57 AM

Anyone know what Skream is doing these days? Mala, Loefah?

Is Skream just doing that shit Magnetic Man stuff?

Cuthbert 03-23-2013 12:34 AM

03 Devilman - Dutty Guy (The New Development EP) - YouTube

Devilman is the funniest MC.

Cuthbert 04-14-2013 02:31 PM

Recommendation for this thread - Terror Danjah. Not sure what I'd describe his music as tbh. He is considered to be Grime but his music is very diverse and he does make Dubstep. Insane producer though:

Bipolar from the Bipolar EP:

Terror Danjah - Bipolar - YouTube

One of the vocals on his "Dark Crawler" album:

Terror Danjah - Dark Crawler Interlude (feat. Mayhem, Deadly & Saf One) - YouTube

You Make Me Feel, from the same album:

Terror Danjah - You Make Me Feel - YouTube

Scarlett O'Hara 04-15-2013 02:21 AM

Great recommendations Fluffy!

Here are some wee gems that I found. Here is a cool set of ambient dubstep which I really enjoyed. It's 1.5 hours, great to get high to.

Now for some artists:

Distance

This dude is totally banging. The first track I listed made me damp. If you like your grindy, dark dubstep - you've come to the right place. There's nothing I've heard of him that I haven't completely loved 100%.

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/50...ce++photo2.jpg

Icicle

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/...63bee5793b.jpg

Cyrus

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/565198/Cyrus.jpg

Another kick ass DJ.

Mala

He is the other half of Digital Mystikz and brings out his own solo mixes as well. Talented on the turn table!

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/50...ala+_png_2.png

Now people remember, if you like this dubstep, you know the stuff I list is actually decent and worth bothering with! I'm not into brostep, I have selective tastes but I can bring some great artists to the table. So keep checking out my thread and I will try and update more often.

jackhammer 04-16-2013 05:37 PM

^^^

Digging Mala a lot. Gotta check back on the others posted (apart from Distance who I know about already).

Albums for you to check out regarding the sort of Dubstep you are into:

Sekklow - Mind The Step
Streaming mix available here: sekklow - Mind The Step | Mixcloud
5 Years of Hyperdub which is a compilation from the hyperdub label.

Here is a track from the Sekklow mix:

heya vanilla. i've got a question or two.

first of all, i know f*ck all about dubstep. when the term hit the town i grew up in, the people that knew of my electronic music exploits (which i just do for fun... kind of like one might paint pictures) told me i make dubstep. i didn't really think too much of it... i just mess around with sounds and it's fun. but recently i made a track using techniques i grabbed from a couple tutorials on how to make dubstep sounds. it's by no means a work of mastery but i'm rather fond of it.

anyway, what little dubstep that i've heard tells me that the definition of it is foggy at best. there seems to be a great many attributes to it, but no set of strict criteria that defines what a dubstep song should abide by. do correct me if i'm wrong, of course.

first question: if you wouldn't mind, my little ditty is 2:44, and if you'd listen to it (all the way through... cuz it changes) and tell me if it's dubstep that would be fantastic.

https://soundcloud.com/elementecture...t-now-tester-2

my second question revolves around the above-mentioned loose criteria. i see dubstep as infinitely open as far as the limits of creativity. 3 things i latch on to in dubstep are deep grooves, whacky, chaotic, aggressive and weird lines/beats, and a departure from regular song structure. so, do you have any recommendations that might fit that bill? the reason i'm asking is basically that i don't have the time to sift through millions of songs to find some that i like.

thanks lady!

aylictal 06-24-2013 08:18 AM

my ideas of well produced dub:

dubstep to me as a producer, i define as a bpm setting of 140-165ish. it's faster than classical trance (130-140) but slower than drum n bass (which is 160-180ish).

thats my take on it. you have to listen to the drums mostly. dubstep usually fringes on trance elements and drum and bass elements a lot of times. although some producers nowadays are also including break into it (see Bassnectar).

I like anything nero.

Art in Music 10-24-2013 01:37 PM

Well, I haven't done enough posts to do external links yet, but the list of artists I used in the recommendations thread that brought me here hasn't seemed to have been mentioned in this thread--outside of Knife Party--so I'd like to call your guys' attention to the following.

Cubism
I wasn't able to find any material related to his backstory or who he really is, but a quick listen to Overflowing or The Legacy will give you an idea of what he's about. S'some good stuff.

Staffy & Maverick
Dear lord, most of their stuff is terrible, but Modern Warfare and Bruvva are good.

Downlink
I'm honestly blown away that no one has mentioned them yet in this thread. Some of their songs take a bit to build up an have less of a drive than other dubstep, but their sound is good nonetheless.

Chrispy
Funny that I was referred to them by a YouTube commenter of all things, but Chrispy is good. I don't really need to suggest any tracks by them. They're all good.

Rusko
A classic dubstep artist who actually has a degree in music. Not all of his stuff is dubstep, but Jahova and Cockney Thug are some good dubstep songs by him, though his stuff tends to be on the mellower side.

Bar 9
Another artist who's got some great dubstep tracks, though not all of his stuff is dubstep. I would suggest giving Strung Out and Piano Tune a listen.

Datsik
Have they been mentioned? If they haven't, I'm just putting them out there.

Substep Infrabass
Wow! I don't know how I forgot to mention them, but they have a very dark, atmospheric sound and their "warble bass" effects are incredibly unique, much in the way that Cubism's are. Anyway, give 666 or The Sathiest a listen.

Against the Machines - Datsik and Downlink; Just listen to it.

That's all.
Happy Thursday.

I heard a track vocaled by a rapper I like, tbh the track was hard.

Dot Rotten - Signature Sound - YouTube

Came in to post Cheeze Loueez EP by Sukh Knight. Quality control, every track is a banger in my top 3 Dubstep releases tbh.

Sukh Knight - Hands In Your Pockets Feat Jahcoozi - YouTube

6 tracks, all on Youtube.

EDIT - Can't believe I didn't post this before? If you're a Dubstep fan and haven't heard this I don't know lol.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYrNqvgkPKQ

Dis is big riddims

I played a vocal of Born Invincible in plug the other day Goofle was rating it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3CigZoFz3Y

TheXTR09 03-09-2014 05:40 AM

She's An Alarm Clock by OMNI, the instrumental one. And even though it's (some sort of) brony song, but is still pretty dirty.

Go look it up on Youtube. Too bad I can't post URLs at the moment. :banghead:

EDIT:
Ooh, page GET.

Cuthbert 03-28-2014 11:09 AM

Vanilla I remember posting that I had burnt a mix onto a CD back in like 2004/5 and would up the mix when I found it.

Download Dubstep 2005.m4a from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Found it. I can't remember what radio station I got it off. Midnight Request Line is on there but I need a track ID. May up it to Dubstep forum.

So when it comes to the Dubstep genre I can be very picky. I started by listening to Spag Heddy and Zomboy. Most people I've spoke to started which the same/similar artists.

Last song I've listened to that I'm loving is Urbanstep - Lost World

I highly recommend that one!

Try this guy...he's a violinist/producer and makes some of the most amazing and soulful music!!! He's got music in an array of EDM genres too, a li'l something for everybody but this is a dubstep venture and a damm-good one too!!!

simple but effective dub synths

haha this is nice

North 04-27-2016 02:11 AM

I think we should definitely revisit some of these artists. Excision has been completely reinvented since being mentioned in this thread. Datsik is huge in North America, & Downlink hasn't been touched on much in this thread either. Now, these projects have all become somewhat "generic" dubstep at this point, but they're still good DJ's & they are super influential.

I recently bought Datsik's new EP, Darkstar. Aside from some forced vocals & a lot of predictable moments it's a good EP. I had the opportunity to see him live this past weekend & had a blast. Let's revive this thread, shall we?
