Meat Beat Manifesto

Really? There is no pre-existing thread about Meat Beat Manifesto? What a damn shame. One of my favorite electronic bands/artists of all time, and highly influencial to many subgenres of electronic music. Jack Dangers is a genius.

Meat Beat Manifesto, often shortened to Meat Beat or MBM, is an electronic music group originally consisting of Jack Dangers and Jonny Stephens formed in 1987 in Swindon, UK. The band, fronted by Dangers (the only permanent member), has proven versatile over the years, experimenting with techno, jungle (drum'n'bass), IDM, industrial, dub, and jazz fusion while touring the world and influencing major acts such as Nine Inch Nails and The Prodigy. Some of the band's earlier work has been credited with partially influencing the rise of the trip-hop and drum and bass genres.
Anyhow, I just wanted to announce that a new album and digital-only EP are on their way:

Totally Together EP - September 14
Metropolis Mail-Order // Totally Together

Answers Come In Dreams LP - October 12
Metropolis Mail-Order // Answers Come In Dreams

I'll have to check out their stuff. I only have one song of theirs that came on The Matrix soundtrack and I loved it. What's a good place to start?

i love Jack Dangers and Meat Beat Manifesto!

personally i feel 'Armed Audio Warfare" is the best place to start...then walk directly to 'Subliminal Sandwich'...if you pass go collect $200

it's crazy...i was just looking at their discography and i don't think i've heard any of the stuff they've release post-millennium!....got some catching up

i remember them, but don't remember that much more fondly/differently than say, Pop Will Eat Eatself or Carter USM at the time... a bit too... juvenille (maybe?) for me?

sidewinder 09-01-2010 11:03 AM

I definitely don't think they were as juvenille as PWEI, even the early stuff. Though they were definitely seen as being in the same circle at some point. Regardless, MBM's style has really changed over the years, Jack Dangers is a true innovator.

As bob. suggested, I would start with Armed Audio Warfare, or Storm The Studio. Go for the chaotic punch to the brain, it's like cut-up industrial hip-hop, amazing shit. I would just go chronologically, personally. The 3rd, 99%, might be more accessible if that's what you're looking for. But if you want an assault on your senses and find out what MBM was really all about, start with the other two. And keep in mind that listening to one album DOES NOT give you an accurate overview of MBM's sound. Aside from the two I mentioned which are pretty similar, they all differ considerably. One of my personal favorites is Satyricon.

I've only ever heard Subliminal Sandwich and Actual Sounds and Voices, but both are decent albums. I'm downloading Satyricon now.

Satyricon is a lot more exciting, and has really great samples that have stuck with me over the years, popping in my head all the time. As do the first 3 albums, actually, but more so this one.

Got to agree sidewinder you and I seem to be of one mind on many bands :)

Did you ever get into Consolidated or The disposable Heroes of Hiphopracy?

chthonicstreams 02-10-2012 09:47 AM

99% is a classic, and i also like MBM's more recent addition of dub as an influence. Autoimmune was the first I'd bought in years, good stuff.

"Satyricon" is the one for me... Jack doesn't always get the attention he deserves... He's very talented and a lovely guy too... Check out the stuff he does under the name Tino as well...
