It's Big Beat week!
Tore may currently be taking a little break but fear not, weekly themes will continue here at MB!
This week is Big Beat week! Personally i haven't ventured far outside of the more common, commercial names of the genre but the electronic forum has always been reasonably busy here so please, feel free to discuss the genre in more specific detail, post your favourites, give us some of the history or throw some recommendations at the lesser educated among us. Big beat, and specifically the artists mentioned in the quote, are what I typically associate with the term "electronica" as I really hate that label applied to any and all electronic music. I never explored deeper than those artists and maybe a few others, personally. Not a huge fan of the style. I used to really like Fatboy Slim, but then one day he really started to annoy me and now I can't stand his music. I think Rockafeller Skank had something to do with it, god what a terrible song I can't believe that was so damn popular. Wait, yes I can. The only Fatboy Slim release I still would recommend is his mix On the Floor at The Boutique. The only drawback is the inclusion of Rockafeller Skank at the end. But at least it's at the end and I can just stop the CD at that point. But this is probably a great starting point for someone wanting to explore big beat, with many old-school tracks or samples that were influencial to the genre included. I think he's a great DJ, I just don't like his productions.

Putting it mildly, that mix is fucking brilliant. This here's one of the best bits off of it;
As for favourites from the whole genre, this one always hits the spot for me; Not to mention this; I found big beat a great place to start before getting into the more danceable, lively side of modern(ish) electronica, so couldn't recommend investigating the genre enough to anyone looking to start somewhere themselves. |

chemical brothers were my fav electronic act to see 'live' for a few years - such a great show, esp with 50k+ jumping up and down at same time - truly great. not seen this year though as had to sell my tix to london gig as away
as for Fat Boy Slim - i have a few CD's and liked but never loved him... however i as at Big Beach Boutique 2 and that easily one of the days of my life..... 250k on a beach with perfect weather (in the UK that is VERY rare!) - YouTube - Fatboy Slim - Brighton Beach - Big Beach Boutique 2 not sure what is currently considered Big Beat - i think a lot of the remixes i like on my mixes could be considered as such... |
