When the ISAM tour wasn't coming close to us, we decided to make a 500 mile trip to Toronto to see the show. I'll admit, there was a slight fear inside me that thought I was going to see an elaborate Laser Floyd show, but my doubts were quickly erased. It was truly fantastic show, DJ'ing and visuals combining into something remarkably special.
Beyond ISAM, and beyond the visual show that ISAM generated, I think Tobin's music is incredible. If for no other reason, he truly works hard to make each release special, and each album has a unique sound and obvious vision that he obviously worked hard to achieve. It will sound like hyperbole, but I think Amon Tobin might be music's true perfectionist. |

Unfortunately I think Tobin's running out of steam. ISAM is a total and complete rehash of The Foley Room minus the musicality and strikes me as 'experimental' music solely for the sake of being 'experimental'. Plus that Kitty Cat track is ****ing stupid. I'd really not like him make a farce of his career and just rehashing Permutations or Supermodified either but he proved that he was able to bridge the gap between those jazzy big beats and experimental recordings while still coming across as uniquely his style with the previous album. ISAM just falls flat and hollow in comparison to The Foley Room and is ultimately the first disappointment I've ever gotten from his work. |
