Shit it's still not out? I'm just gonna preorder the thing

jps 04-05-2010 11:50 AM

I heard the preview/flylo set in Gilles Peterson show couple weeks ago and I have to say it sounds good but I'm a bit dissappointed. Dance of the Pseudo Nymphs sounds great tho. Then again my fav releases was 1983 so I'm tipping more in the beat side.

sidewinder 04-05-2010 04:33 PM

Another month before it's out. I pre-ordered the limited edition one from Warp/Bleep.

I only listened to the promo song/single once and didn't think much of it, but I'm fairly confident I'll enjoy the album. I've read some good things.

The CD? That's what I'm going to do. I see it comes w/MP3s. That reminds me - I haven't logged in to Bleep for years now. I'll need to re-signup

sidewinder 04-05-2010 11:47 PM

Yeah the CD. Bleep recently announced that all CD and vinyl purchases from now on will come with downloads. And in some cases (like Autechre), they release the MP3s before the official date. So if you've pre-ordered, you get them as soon as they release them. Leaks are already out so it might not be too much longer.

Only problem is that they aren't cheap. You're likely to get a better deal locally or on Amazon (even new) once it's available.

Yeah - that's why I haven't used Bleep for so long.
This is a special case though.

Brainfeeder Radio presents… COSMOGRAMMA SPECIAL 4/20 « Flying Lotus

To celebrate 4/20 and the forthcoming album release of ‘Cosmogramma’ (out 3rd/4th May), Flying Lotus and his Brainfeeder crew are broadcasting a radio show live from LA, together with a special one-off preorder of the album.

Flying Lotus will take you through chosen cuts from his LP alongside other participants including The Gaslamp Killer (who co-produced Gonjasufi's album), Ras G, Daedelus, Teebs, Matthewdavid, Dr. Strangeloop and more.

That's today, by the way, as in, right now.

Engine 04-20-2010 05:46 PM

^ nice!

thanks for pointing this out

sidewinder 04-20-2010 10:53 PM

I just finally tuned in, Daedelus is on the decks now. Really cool hip-hop/wonky stuff so far. Not sure who was on when I first tuned in.

Meph1986 05-07-2010 08:25 PM

Really digging the new album....

workshed 07-13-2010 04:41 PM

can anyone give me an up of the album in a private message?
all the versions of the album i've got have been distorted, and i'm sick of just streaming it.

Meph1986 07-13-2010 05:22 PM

Which album?

Engine 07-13-2010 08:27 PM

Fuck it - let him stream it or pay up.

Anyway, I'm unsure about the new one. I like it but I don't find myself listening to it very often - for sure it didn't start a temporary obsession which is generally how I can tell if I love an album or not.

I'm really hoping there is a Madlib/Flying Lotus collaboration, i can't imagine it being anything but awesome.

debaserr 08-25-2010 07:48 PM

i don't understand all of the love for cosmogramma. it's ok. the samples are great and the rest leaves something to be desired.

Maybe one day, when you're thinking about something else entirely, maybe contemplating nature, death, and the significance of life, maybe then you'll be free of desire and love this album.

Seriously, you would have to like 'abstract electronic' music to really enjoy Cosmogramma. I'm not saying that you should bother listening to it much if you don't. But there's definitely love in it.

debaserr 08-25-2010 08:03 PM

what is your favorite track? i would rate most of it above average, but there is nothing that piques my interest. so many of the songs are little ditties that peak immediately then repeat.

Oh hey, I missed this post -- To answer your question / comment:

I can totally understand where your coming from as the album is really quite 'abstract' compared to much of his other music. It's got a lot of short, meandering tracks and not a whole lot of beats. I had problems getting into it myself for a while. I liked it immediately but after a few listens I just kind of never put it on again. But recently I've been listening to it a lot and so here's my response to you:

I began to think of it as more of a 70s Jazz fusion album - or maybe Krautrock even. I also only listen to the album straight through, never single songs. It made a lot more sense to me after that.

My favorite of the rare groove-based tracks is this:
Do the Astral Plane

But my favorite track is probably this:
Dance of the Pseudo Nymph

WooferWolf 10-23-2010 08:43 PM

Honestly, the genres are blending...

It seems that the genres are blending when it comes to electronica and hip hop. Honestly, its a beautiful meeting I do believe. FlyLo is a perfect example of this.

Agreed, I really like it quite a bit but I still think Prefuse 73s Vocal Studies & Uprock Narratives is a more hip hop oriented bit of class in the broken beat genre.

New track "Caravan of Delight" featured on an Ed Banger compilation.

I can't express how much i dig Flying Lotus, but honestly, this thread should be in the hip hop section. FlyLo is way more influenced by jazz and hip hop than electronic music. He just expresses his art through electronics. I would compare his **** to DJ Shadow. Anyway, those are my two cents.

I disagree...he may well be influenced by jazz and hip-hop but the end result is electronic music. Not just because he's creating it with electronic equipment. DJ Shadow retains more of a hip-hop beat and warmth throughout his material, so I would tend to classify him as hip-hop before I would Flying Lotus - who is far more mechanical and into electronic trickery.

arsonill 04-21-2011 06:54 PM

Flylo

I would consider his music to be more of constantly evolving jam, rather than a series of tracks, or even measures, he's breaking some ground for sure, hes a loop digger for sure, and he's into DMT so who knows what he even thinks about the tunes he makes.

Phantom Limb 05-02-2011 02:11 PM

Booyah!

ListenUp 05-17-2011 06:32 AM

Apparently he is remixing the latest Radiohead album. Will be really interested to see how that comes out if it ever sees the light of day!

Interesting.

Raust 05-21-2011 09:42 AM

I just listened to Cosmogramma awhile ago. Definatley one of the better releases from '10 and my favorite release from him so far.

ListenUp 05-26-2011 07:34 AM

Man is a genius!

Trauma 05-29-2011 05:13 PM

Flying Lotus is really cool.
He'll be playing at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival this year, which is cool, but too expensive for me! $35/day!
http://demf2011.info/
Anyway, his music is innovative and unique and creates such a diverse array of atmospheric soundscapes.
Furthermore, how could you not like his work with Adult Swim?

TheRealHimself 06-23-2011 06:59 AM

I just couldn't get into Cosmogramma, the jazz just throws me off completely. Might try again when I get my HD518s though.

Phantom Limb 01-25-2012 01:51 PM

I don't know if you guys have heard these beats but they bang.

All but the last song, which is the title track off 1983, are off the July Heat beat tape. Just another strong point in my Flying Lotus/Hip Hop argument.

Phantom Limb 01-28-2012 02:30 PM

Ridiculous.
