I can't make my mind up about these they have seemed to adopt that classic NY disco sound from yesteryear which is not a bad thing.

There's is quite a bit of old school disco, but Antony just gives it a whole new wonderfully sombre spin. Me likes...

Yeah, I've been loving all this disco revival stuff lately. Escort, Trus'me, all the Italians Do It Better stuff, etc.

If all their releases are on par with this and "Happy House," DFA is shaping up for a seriously good year. I remember going into 2005 thinking that, and they really delivered (05 ruled), so hopefully they can do the same now.

Ok, three songs I have serious issues with:

Athena - the worst song on the album. Incredibly annoying vocals and music that sounds like a talentless amateur wrote it on his day off.

This is my love - again the uninspired vocals, but this time the music is rather good, at least when that tuneless loser shuts up.

True false, fake real - filler closer that goes absolutely nowhere.

Overall it's a good album, but those three songs lower the quality significantly. Pitchfork giving it 9.1 is an absolute exaggeration and one of the many reasons why people like to call it Shitfork.

MNML SSGS had a really great blog post about Pitchfork (and other "indie" magazines') misrepresentation of dance music (for them EDM doesn't really exist outside of DFA, Kompakt, Bpitch Control, etc.), and I think their reaction to H&LA is a great example of that.

I read the text and agree with it to a certain extent. But I'm not sure how H&LA come into it.

I should add that this isn’t a Pitchfork review, and that although ‘the fork’ have been responsible for some of the most outrageously stupid and misguided dance music reviews, that they also ‘employ’ (I use the word with the looseness of empty pockets in baggy trousers) writers like Tim Finney, Phillip Sherburne and Mark Richardson, all of whom know their **** and write very eloquently about electronic music. Check out Sherburne’s review of H & LA, or Mark Richardson’s review of Quaristice, which was much more thorough and informative than the one I wrote for RA.
Apparently H&LA were reviewed by someone who "knows their shit"...\
