Start with the first move from pop into house which was "Soul to soul" great classic, many songs use base tracks from it for many new? tunes.

It's sort of hard to give suggestions, since this is basically the equivalent of making a thread asking for Rock music, but off the top of my head:

Classic stuff:
Fingers Inc AKA Larry Heard
DJ Pierre (also: Phuture)
Frankie Knuckles
Kerri Chandler
Larry Levan
Derrick Carter
DJ Sneak
Green Velvet AKA Cajmere

Popular stuff you'll probably recognize/Big Beat (this isn't really House, but is easy to get into):
Daft Punk
Cassius
John Digweed
Armand Van Helden
Fatboy Slim
Basement Jaxx
The Prodigy
Moby
The Chemical Brothers
The Crystal Method

House is dance music, it shot off into many different sub-genres since the mid eighties but the bpm is more or less the same...

the thing to understand is dance music isn't like rock, it's rooted in the 12'' single and the DJ's selections that make for a legendary set! (not individual artists and albums) - the producers of the tracks might aswell be anonymous

google 'Hacienda Classics'. Hacienda was a legendary club in Manchester in the late 80's. They played HOUSE. this is the best place to start, it has all the rewind-fodder (the classics) and is spread across 3 discs. The tracks on each disc are mixed together to make one continuous set, the way house is meant to be heard in a club environment.

seriously, lol, cop that cd.
oh and it was mixed by Hacienda regulars, like Peter Hook (New Order bassist)
