M.i.a.

Alright, me being a newbie and all, I dont know if this artist has been discussed as of yet.

Anyone familiar with M.I.A.? I was hesitant on posting her within the indie/alternative category, considering her sound is somewhat bottomless. Her inspirations come from drum and bass, punk, middle eastern, bhangra, hip hop, electro, tribal, etc.

Anyways, I'm a huge fan of hers and I recently had the opportunity to witness her live for the second time. She's a beast, her sound is completely her own. She brings such a diverse group of people to her shows as well, which is always nice to see.

check out these tracks:

From her 1st Arular
- Bingo
- 10 Dollar
- Galang
- URAQT
- Bucky Done Gun

From her 2nd LP Kala
- Bamboo Banga
- Paper Planes
- XR2
- 20 Dollar
- Hussel
- Boyz

Give her a chance. You either get her or you dont really.

I've been meaning to check her out, whats the best album to start on?

under 12-01-2007 10:18 PM

i like the sound but some of the albums are just a little....iffy.

Kala blows Arular out of the water, hands down.

under 12-01-2007 10:34 PM

i gotta say i like Arular better only because its more instrumental for my taste

Well, Kala is far more diverse, yet it's still consistent and cohesive. Kala was recorded all over the world and it definately shows. I still think that Arular has its niche, but I think Kala has so much more character.

Oh, and I suggest anyone to smoke and listen to Kala all the way through. It's quite an experience. Especially on the slinky opener "Bamboo Banger", the synth enthralled "Hussel", the chilling "20 dollar" (which samples Pixies "where is my mind"), the rave appropriate "XR2", and on the chilled out "Paper Planes".

Listened to Kala ages ago & thought it was a total mess.

djchameleon 12-02-2007 06:28 AM

I appreciate Arular more after hearing Kala the first time.

Pretty much. But that's not taking anything away from Arular, which is still a damn fine record. This bitch can make me move, I love her music.

mermaid 12-02-2007 10:37 AM

Apparently she's not making music anymore? err it's not letting me post the link, but here: hxxp://blog.muchmusic.com/archives/2007/11/mia_cant_quit.php

anyways, I LOVE M.I.A. I'd have to say that Arular is my favourite of her albums, but Kala is still really great. the latter is probably the best album to start off with, if you're looking to get into her.

I have to play U.R.A.Q.T. at least 5 times a day :)

any of her albums can make anyone move. its just the matter of which is better. i mean one could make you move better than the other.
also it depends on what kind of her music you like. than it depends on which album is better.

to sum it up. everything varies on the listener.

O....K.....

I only have Arular and it just get's on my nerves after a while. Bucky Done Gun is a great track. Much prefer the girl power of CCS!

O'Bannion 12-03-2007 03:13 PM

I need to get into CSS, only heard a couple of tracks.

O'Bannion 12-06-2007 09:38 PM

I've seen videos of her live and while the music sounds great, she does not.

Dizzys in the wolf 12-07-2007 10:58 AM

I have the same birthday as her ^^. and Kala is one of my favourite albums ever, I love it.

mandthep 12-12-2007 09:37 PM

M.i.a. is great. Check out her remix album with Diplo, Piracy Funds Terrorism Volume 1...

I just happen to adore CSS and have so much more love for them than M.I.A
-nods enthusiastically-

spudgirl 12-31-2007 07:20 PM

I saw her at Lolla and she was tits.

spudgirl 12-31-2007 07:21 PM

Like good tits.

O'Bannion 01-01-2008 11:08 AM

I listened to CSS's debut and was not impressed. As for Kala, I think it's one of the best albums of the year. Top 5 probably.

Mia > M.i.a.

Hitting_Singularity 11-24-2010 12:01 AM

M.i.a.

okay, so I'm not sure where to post this.. also I'm surprised there isn't already a thread for M.I.A. if there is please feel free point me in that direction and delete this thread.

I started listening to M.I.A. about a year ago.. I listened to Arlular and Kala, the first time it was like.. this is really weird and I wasn't sure if it was enjoyable, but after a couple more album listens I was hooked. My favorite songs were World Town and XR2

What do people think of her new album? I wasn't taken with it immediately but then that's M.I.A. for you. I thought it wasn't as good as Kala at first but after a good few months of listening to it I'd say it's about tied.

The first song I loved was 'It Takes A Muscle' There is something amazing about how she combined reggae and synthetic electronic in such a way that it actually felt like a heartfelt song

The rest of the album has grown on me as well, but especially the single XXXO. And I love the music video that is all Bollywood style

Oh and I guess I could mention that I think she is absolutely stunning..

And nobody even mention Paper Planes, it's one of her worst songs, and if that's all you've heard of her don't bother posting.. please

Hitting_Singularity 11-29-2010 09:10 PM

wow, seriously? no M.I.A. fans?

or is there another thread that I can't find

Sparky 01-11-2011 05:55 PM

i'm digging her new mixtape vicki leekx a lot. I've always loved MIA's style and she's back to form now

Hitting_Singularity 01-14-2011 11:09 AM

I could have sworn there was already an MIA thread somewhere, I can't find it though. At any rate, I'm definitely a fan. Haven't heard her new album though.

bob. 01-14-2011 11:56 AM

yeah...i have a bit of a soft spot for M.I.A.....the new album is actually quite good

Roland 01-14-2011 12:44 PM

I have all the M.I.A albums she is pretty talented but very inconsistent, I cannot listen to her albums with using the skip button on a regular basis, she is experimental but sometimes experimental is not a good thing.

Usually if the artist name isn't searchable, it helps to try album names.

Experimental is always good. Some people just aren't intense enough.

let me rephrase that.

MOST people aren't

thanks!

edit: FUUUUUUUUUUUUU** how does this keep getting better and better?!?!?

I am LOVING the mixtape. Everyone get it here!
ViCKi LEEKX

I'm halfway through, but I can tell I will be blasting this many times for the next few months... or years

might be the best thing she's done. I'm glad she's found a way to get away from the mainstream, it seems like it was really affecting her negatively.. I'm really excited to see her interview tonight now, I wonder if she talks about the mixtape..hmmm

djchameleon 01-14-2011 08:58 PM

yeah I downloaded Vicki Leekx but haven't listened to it yet, thanks for reminding me actually....i will get right on that.

Sparky 02-06-2012 12:43 AM

major kudos to her for giving the middle finger during the super bowl. It makes me respect and admire her a lot more, seriously.

Sparky 02-09-2012 04:34 PM

Her single and the music video for it are pretty cool.

This type of "pussy empowerment"/we bad girls stuff is a hell lot more interesting then lady gaga, lana del ray, nicki minaj bs.

Phantom Limb 02-09-2012 04:41 PM

^Good stuff. I should finally go listen her.

Sparky 02-09-2012 04:45 PM

Thats actually from the vickileex mixtape which has some gems but as a whole really isn't that good.

I still really only care for Kala, which is one of the last pop albums i really loved.
