Default Tell me about Indian electronica/dance music

There seem to be a ton of Indian electronic dance songs that I would like—I'm talking about clubby, electronic music with distinctly Indian melodies and vocals. I hear them in movies, in stores and restaurants, or coming out of car windows. I even occasionally catch a video on TV, but unfortunately the videos don't seem to end with name of the artist listed anywhere so I never know who the hell I was just listening to. Is there anyone here who is familiar with type of music who could give me some good recommendations?

Umm...Talvin Singh is really cool. Listen to him and tell me if it's what you're looking for, because I'm not quite sure if it is or not. If it is then there's tons of other stuff I could tell you about.

Panjabi MC is exactly the sort of thing you are after also Nitin Sawhney delves into Asian, jazz and electronica.

Thank you both for the suggestions...

Talvin Singh—This is much more atmospheric than what I'm looking for. I'm interested in hearing clubby, dancey type Indian music.

Panjabi MC—Much closer to what I'm talking about. Though unfortunately I'm already familiar with him. Any other suggestions in a similar vein?

Nitin Sawhney—None of the CDs on Amazon had samples I could listen to. Do you know of anywhere I could hear samples of some of this music?

You should try Muslimgauze. He's not Indian he was white, (was) since he died a while back. But his music is influenced by Islam and it's pretty good. Though nothing like anything you've asked for since it's ambient-esque stuff.

Thanks! This isn't really what I was looking for but some of it sounds pretty good.

I already own one of his albums. His stuff wasn't bad, it's not something I listen to all the time but every once in a while it makes for a good listen. But as you said it's not what I was looking for in this thread.

I don't know if you can listen in; I presume you can, but the BBC here in Blighty has an asian network that has some great Bhangra on it. This may help with your search for bands as all shows are tracklisted.

BBC - Asian Network
