a push in the right direction

Hello!

I'm not a huge fan of electronica, but I have heard songs with very catchy melodies and awesome ambient sounds...which makes me want to explore the genre a bit.

The type of elements I'm looking for are that of strong melody, and interesting sounds that create a sort of 'spacey' atmosphere (I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan). I'm looking for a new sound that takes you on a mental journey.

Things I'd like to avoid, however, are the typical repetitive dance club songs...like an 8 minute drum beat that never changes...*boom-ch-boom-ch-boom-ch-boom-ch* Also, nothing hip-hop flavored.

Does anybody have some suggestions? Thanks in advance!

^ check out daft punk, they are my favorite 'electronica' music. 3 good cd's to choose from. to me they are exactly what that style of music should sound like.

The double CD release from Cream (the club) Entitled FUTURE CHILL, is a perfect representation of what you are looking for, especially disc 2.

jgd85-I personally would'nt agree. I like DAFT PUNK, but there are generally more suited to a pre club atmosphere, and are too bass heavy to be ambient.

I have this album (Future Chill) , if you want it upped.

Autechre - Amber

get this album son.

i understand, i just recommend anyone who sort of likes electronica to test the waters with daft punk. they really got me to start looking at the style of music with a different appreciation. i haven't heard of 'future chill' but i will definitely check it out.

I wonder if Vineyard Rose, with her four posts, is still lurking on MB? If so, your patience has been rewarded, VR! Your thread is suddenly in the spotlight because of http://www.musicbanter.com/games-lis...litz-game.html

Who will be the first (after Joyboyo, jackhammer and Gravity Slips) to give Rose "a push in the right direction"? I presume there have been a couple of electronica releases in the ten years since those guys posted - so which albums/groups fit Rose's description?

I have absolutely no good recommendations for following the exact guidelines of this request, but jackhammer's response gives some good chillout and downtempo type stuff which I know a bit about.

I quite like this whole album, pretty damn laid back and spacey:

I guess it depends on what the OP means by electronia. I mean, Depeche Mode could be considered electronica though I'm sure that's not what the OP had in mind.

I guess getting close to electronica though, I'd go with Eno, Ultravox, and maybe Stereolab.

I call bull**** on that being released in 1971.

Frownland 01-12-2018 08:50 AM

Call him up, Bull**** will tell you that 71 is the correct year.

Trollheart 01-12-2018 09:17 AM

I have no idea whether it's considered electronica, and I'm sure Frown will be surprised, but I've been getting into drone a bit. Oh, nothing he would consider proper drone, I'm sure, though I'm even thinking of giving Dopesmoker another shot. Solar Fields has impressed me

as has Steve Roach

and Wiliam Basinski

Then, apart from drone (if those are drone) there's Carbon Based Lifeforms

Vangelis

and of course, the grand-daddy of them all...

Frownland 01-12-2018 09:24 AM

I've been telling you that you're a drone fan for years. I'm sure that you'll come around on Beefheart too.

Meh, I think what you actually said was that I drone on. Which is certainly true. I'll give that a listen and let you know what I think of it later.

Wave Racer did some cool ****:

I find some of this music to be quite challenging - the challenge being to stick it out to the end without slipping into a coma.

^ Nevertheless, I can x2 this recommendation, although it's best to choose carefully to get the Eno that you want. Some of his best ambient albums were done with Fripp, who of course went on to do plenty of ambient albums on his own. Of the whole bunch, I'd recommend "Heavenly Music Corporation" as being their finest hour; it has some slow but robust guitar playing from R.Fripp.

^ This album sounds great - as you say, it may not fit the OP requirements too well, but it is all the better for that, imo. For a similar reason I liked the Vangelis and Wave Racer tracks too.

I like Moby. Play is an incredible album :)

I'm glad you liked it. I remember the first time I heard it, the opening track blew me away. It just has a nice combination of groove, atmosphere, and it does occasionally get into that atmospheric ambience that I think the OP is referring to, but I was just kind of listening to that followup post and Air was one of the first things I thought of.
