You can really say there's a best speed. Different speed help qualify what type of techno/electronica it is. For example 135 to i think 160 is trance...

I think its hard to tell what exactly classifies a genre whether its what synths and drums you use to the bpm.Ive done lots of my work in 140 some in 170 and a few in i dunno 100-115 or something like that. Usually I just call it electronica!

Except Trance isn't Techno so this post isn't very helpful.

it depends under 120 is just boring but over 310 is just unlistenable

I'm actually childhood friends with The Horrorist and I asked him this question in the past hour through Facebook. He asked me what songs of his I liked the most, I told him Wire to the Ear, Body to Body, and The Virus...then he goes in no uncertain terms: 170.
I'll take his word for it since he's been jamming with synthesizers and sequencers since I met him back in 1986 when he would hang out w/ my older brother.

right around 700 is where all notes start to blend into one and i pass out.

so, any faster than 700 is pretty good i would say.

Trance is generally around 138-145, anything above 180 would be soul destroying really!

Minimal is usually between 124-134, detroit between 132-142, hard techno around 140-150 (extreme!).

I generally produce in the 125-135 range, deep dubby techno influenced by minimal sounds!

Berlin all the way!
