As for Nirvana, the only thing you need to say is why you put it all the way at 89! Haha just kidding, and great list by the way it has a lot of amazing albums I haven't listened to or even thought about in a while. |

I have decided to revisit my most well known thread and see just how I feel about the placings now 4 years on from when I first started on it.
100. Dalek - Absense (2004) Holy **** this is just brutal. If you want sheer raw noise this beats about 99% of most metal albums i`ve ever heard.Which isn`t bad considering it a hip hop album. If only more hip hop was like this. And no I didn`t choose this because of the Doctor Who connection , so there. Favourite songs - Asylum (Permanent Underclass), In The Midst Of Struggle, Opiate The Masses Today I liked this a lot at the time. When I was doing this I found this album to be a breath of fresh air when I found a lot of hip hop had become stale & boring. I have to admit i've not really listened to this much since and I think if I was to do this list now I doubt it would make the top 100 Original Position - 100 Position Now - Out of the 100 99. Stereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup (1996) Ahhhhhh , Krautrock influences mixed with pure pop melodies and not to mention Laetitia Sadier`s gorgeous horny voice. There is just so much going on in this record dance , hip hop , electronica , pop , rock , jazz , dub....... you have to listen to it again & again just to get everything. Favourite songs - Metronomic Underground, Cyberies Revenge , Les Yper-Sound Today Back when I was doing this I hadn't really had much exposure to Stereolab. I'd only heard this and their debut. Since then I have amassed the bands whole discography & gotten into them a lot more. This would definitely be a lot higher in the list. Original Position - 99 Position Now - Top 30 , maybe into the top 20 98. The Beatles - Revolver (1966) I`m not the biggest Beatles fan by a long shot but this album HAS to be on the list.Would probably be a lot higher if it wasn`t for Yellow ****ing Submarine. Favourite songs - Taxman , I`m Only Sleeping , Tomorrow Never Knows Today I still like this album a lot , I give it the odd airing once in a while but not too often. I still think it's head & shoulders above anything else they did. Original Position - 98 Position Now - About the same 97 Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets (1973) I`ll be honest , i`ve never actually heard that much of Eno`s solo stuff. Not even the album he did with David Byrne. I bought this album for the simple reason that it`s his first solo album AND because basically it`s a Roxy Music album without Bryan Ferry. It` s a lot more guitar based than I imagined an Eno solo album to be and the lyrics are just plain odd.But it does have this quirky charm to it. Very strange yet very compelling Favourite Songs - Needles In The Camel`s Eye , Baby`s On Fire , Driving Me Backwards[/QUOTE] Today Like Stereolab I was just getting into Eno's solo stuff around the time this was written. It still gets plenty of plays and my liking of it grows with every one. This would be considerably higher. Original Position - 97 Position Now - Top 40 - 30

96. Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast (1982) OK , this is where it all started.THIS was the first album I ever bought with my first ever wage packet. I was a 12 year old computer geek into books & things.I`d had exposure to punk at an early age. I liked it , but it didn`t really stir anything in me.So my only real exposure came in the form of chart music. I decided that I was looking for something new. I went to the record store with my friend Steven & just spent a while looking around. After a few minutes I was drawn to this album.I`d heard at least one song off it (My mother had bought the Run To The Hills single), so I bought it. And I loved it , so much so just a couple of months later I had most Maiden , AC/DC & Van Halen albums out at the time. And my love of music just got bigger & bigger & more diverse from that moment on. I don`t listen to this much now , in fact I don`t think I have in almost a decade but it deserves to be on here because it changed my life. Favourite songs - 22 Acacia Avenue , Number Of The Beast , Hallowed Be Thy Name Today This does hold some sentimental value for me , and I do find myself listening to Iron Maiden more now than I did when I wrote the list. I still give it a spin now & again but I think if I was to choose an Iron Maiden album to go in a top 100 I would probably go with a Dianno era album , maybe Killers which I think is hugely underrated. Original Position - 96 Position Now - Around the same , but as I can only have one album per band in the list it would have to go & Killers would be listed around 60 or 70. 95. The Pretty Things - S F Sorrow (1968) This is a much over looked concept album that was said to have inspired The Who`s Tommy. I have to say I have absolutely no idea what that concept in this album is supposed to be. But I like not understanding everything about something , it makes it`s appeal last longer. It`s this sort of album that makes me realise I don`t listen to enough psychedelia. Favourite songs - Bracelet Of Fingers , Balloon Burning , Defecating Sorrow (Which wasn`t on the original album) Today I know there are some people here who think this is a classic album but to be honest I got bored of it pretty quickly. I found myself liking their earlier rawer albums more than this one , but not enough to include any of them into a top 100. Original Position - 95 Position Now - Out 94. Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction(1987) I listened to this for the first time in ages a few weeks ago & couldn`t beleive how dated it sounds. That said this album is pure nostaligia for me.It was one of the first records I bought having not heard it in the charts ,I`d heard a GnR song (Shadow Of Your Love) on a compilation album (with the naff title Time To Rock) & went out & got it on import on vinyl with the original rape sleeve for my birthday long before they became successful.(God I feel old). But back then as a young teen I thought it was the greatest album ever. Favourite songs - Welcome To The Jungle , It`s So Easy , Rocket Queen Today An album I grew up with and played to death in my youth. Listened to it a while back & found myself bored with most of the better known songs just because i'd heard them so much. I still enjoyed some of the tracks though and I can see why I listed it , however i'm not so sure I would now. Original Position - 94 Position Now - Just bubbling under 100 93. Curtis Mayfield - Superfly (1972) I first heard this about a year and a half ago when a girl I work with (A black girl with a 6 inch afro.... how appropriate ) gave me a lift to work & she was playing this in her car , and I just totally fell in love with it & went out & bought it the following day. And thus my love of blaxploitation movie soundtracks was born. Favourite songs - Pusherman , No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song) , Superfly Today I still love this album a lot , but since writing the list I have heard his other stuff & find myself liking a couple of his other albums more. He'd still be on the list but just not this album. Original Position - 93 Position Now - Around the same , but i'd have his Curtis or Roots album instead

92. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus (2004) I can`t believe how awesome this record is. And it`s just so big sounding. It`s the kind of album i`ve been waiting for Nick Cave to come out with ever since I first heard him in 1994, before i`d always thought he was good but there was just something that stopped him coming out with a truly great album .Anyway he`s done it & this is an epic work of genius. Favourite Songs - Get Ready for Love , Cannibal's Hymn , There She Goes My Beautiful World Today When I wrote this list this album had just come out & I was playing it to death. Before this album I liked Nick Cave but only individual songs rather than an entire album. Since then I have become a huge fan of Nick Cave & can see that this is probably his most commercial album he'd made up till that point. I wouldn't choose this album now , it would have to be Tender Prey and it would be a lot more higher than this. Original Position - 92 Position Now - Out , But Tender Prey would be top 20 91. Echo And The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain (1984) The Bunnymen`s influence on modern American indie is ****ing huge yet for some reason I don`t think they get anywhere near the credit they deserve. You ask any current Indie darlings of the press who`ve not ripped off the entire Gang Of Four back catalogue who they were inspired by & you can bet they`ll say the Bunnymen.Anyway this album was them at their peak. Their next album was their biggest selling but it`s a pale imitation of this one. Favourite songs - The Killing Moon , Silver , Seven Seas Today I never really know what my favourite Bunnymen album is. It could be this , Crocodiles or Heaven Up Here. The decision would change on a daily basis. I think today I would go with Crocodiles and I would have it around this area of the chart. Original Position - 91 Position Now - Out , With Crocodiles in it's place here 90. The Cramps - Off The Bone (1983) OK I cheated , this is a singles compilation. But then i`ve never really been a big fan of theirs.I just like this because it`s a nice little package of their best stuff so you really don`t need to bother with the rest. And I think they did the whole 1950s B movie thing much much better than the Misfits ever did. Favourite songs - Human Fly , Garbageman , Drug Train Today I'm still not a huge Cramps fan although I do like to blast them out occasionally ,and this is a pretty good summery of the best stuff at their peak. I don't think I would change anything here. Original Position - 90 Position Now - 90 89. Nirvana - Nevermind (1991) I really don`t need to say anything about this do I ? Today I still have no interest in hearing this album again , however I have found myself getting a couple of Nirvana bootlegs and listening to them for the first time in years. I think I included this album just to prove a point and for nostalgia purposes more than anything. I think I would be more likely to put In Utero rather than this although I doubt either would make the list. Original Position - 89 Position Now - Out

88. Iggy Pop - New Values (1979) I don`t care what anyone says , THIS is my favourite Iggy Pop album. I know people will point to Lust For Life & The Idiot , but I listen to this album more than any other Iggy album. It might not have the hit singles on it but I think overall the songs on this album are better.Disagree all you like I don`t care HA!. Favourite songs - Tell Me A Story , I`m Bored , 5 Foot 1 Today I still think this album is better than The idiot or Lust For Life and it gets a hell of a lot of plays by me to this day. Way too low. Original Position - 88 Position now - Low 20s 87. Motley Crue - Shout At The Devil (1983) Big , loud , dumb, sexist , funny as f*ck and an awful cover of the Beatles Helter Skelter , what more could you want. If you can`t smile at this you have no sense of humour whatsoever. Favourite songs - Looks That Kill , Too Young To Fall In Love , 10 Seconds To Love Today This is another album on here for sentimental reasons. I've not listened to this in years but I have found myself listening to a few Motley Crue bootlegs from this era of the band and I still enjoy them regardless of the fact I know it's not very good. I'd probably still have this on the list just for the hell of it. Original Position - 87 Position now - 100 or 99 86. Martina Topley Bird - Quixotic (2003) Seriously i`m beginning to think i`m the only person in the world who owns this album. I mean what more do I have to say to get one of you ****ers to buy this. The woman was recently called 'the black Marlene Dietrich of Soul'. What more do you need. I swear this woman has the most gorgeous voice ever & is at home singing rock (Which has been compared to PJ Harvey), soul , ballads , blues ...just about anything. This woman is something special. For the name of God someone check her out.I`m beginning to think i`m fighting a losing battle here. Favourite songs - Anything , Soul Food , Too Tough To Die Today I played this to death for about 3 years then just suddenly stopped. I still think it's a good album but I doubt it would be in any list I did now Original Position - 86 Position Now - Out 85. The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette (1979) I think this is a million times better than their first album. This album has all the Damned songs I grew up listening to on it so it`ll always remain close to my heart. Favourite songs - Love Song , I Just Can`t Be Happy Today , Smash It Up Today I play this album to death while i'm working and it still love every track on it. And I also think it's their best album by far. This would be much much higher Original Position - 85 Position Now - 10-20

84. Hanoi Rocks - All Those Wasted Years (1984) The had the hair , they had the make up , they were from the 80s.But don`t let that fool you. Hanoi Rocks were never hair metal. This is closer to the kinda scuzzed out trashy blues rock that the Stones & the New York Dolls did so well rather than being like Bon Jovi & Poison. This album was recorded live at the Marquee club at Christmas 1983 & shows that their live show was better than anything they ever did in the studio. It was also kind of the end of an era. After this they got a major label deal ,relocated to LA , made a disappointing album & then split up after Vince Neil killed drummer Razzle. It was never the same again after this album. Favourite songs - Tragedy , Don`t Ever Leave Me , A Beer & A Cigarette Today This is still a perennial favourite of mine , i've lived with this album around 15 years and I still enjoy it just as much now as I did then.I don't think I would change too much about this. Original Position - 84 Position Now - 84 83. Redd Kross - Neurotica (1987) One of these days someone will give me a good reason why this band were never huge , because i`ve never been able to understand why not. They had great songs , a good vocalist , catchy songs , they could hammer out a good rock song....yet nothing. Maybe it was down to bad timing. I swear had they been a new band in the mid 90s people would have been falling over themselves to give this band attention. I will always be baffled to the indifference shown to this band by the record buying public. But hey , at least someone at allmusic.com rates them... Neurotica did manage to find its way into some very important young people's bedrooms. Redd Kross had unwittingly created the rough, lo-fi, melodic, rock & roll template that bands like Mudhoney and Nirvana would become very successful exploring over the next few years. At least i`m not alone. Favourite songs - Neurotica , Janus, Jeanie and George Harrison , Ballad Of A Love Doll Today I still think they're one of the most underrated bands of the late 80s/ early 90s and I still love this album a lot. Bubblegum pop mixed with punk but managing not to sound like turgid punk pop. I'm not as hot as them as I used to be but I think they'd still scrape into the list. Original Position - 83 Position Now - 10 to 15 positions lower 82. Slayer - Reign In Blood (1986) The most perfect 28 minutes in thrash metal , I don`t expect any of you to argue about it either. It was this album that made me realise that 99% of all those other thrash metal bands didn`t matter one bit.Thats why there`s no Metallica albums on this list ... HA! Favourite songs - Angel Of Death , Alter Of Sacrifice , Raining Blood Today I wasn't really into metal when I wrote the list but still named a few metal albums out of respect for how much I loved them growing up. Reign In Blood is still an album I rate highly , in fact I think looking back this is much too low. Original Position - 82 Position Now - low 30s 81. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand (2003) I was wrong , I admit it. I HATED this band when they first came along. I was sick to death of the hype sick to death of hearing Take Me Out played about 50 times a day on the radio , I really loathed them. Skip forward about a year , the hype has died down & i`m watching TV around 3am and they`re playing highlights from some festival. Franz Ferdinand come onstage & I groan. They start playing Matinee , my ears prick up....this isn`t bad. They play Auf Achse. By the end of that song I want the album & buy it the following week. The more I listen to it the more I like it. Like I said , I was wrong ,i`m an idiot. Favourite songs - Matinee . Auf Achse , Jacqueline Today I've really began to despise the British 'indie' scene over the past few years , I think of the past 5 years only this album & the Arctic Monkeys debut is really anything to shout about when it comes to British mainstream guitar rock and of those two albums I prefer this one. I don't think I would change too much here. Original Position - 81 Position Now - low 80s

I agree 100% about Iron Maiden's Killers. I absolutely adore it. Novel idea for this thread too!

I have to admit this thread was incredibley influential on me when i first joined, i remember i gave the likes of the Super Furries, Primal Scream and Massive Attack a listen and subsequently played the death out of them just because of this thread.
