Update for week ending January 26 2014

Ah, the responsibilites that weigh me down. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Or not, as the case may be. Rain or shine, healthy or ill, I do my best to have the very latest updates in the Journals section all packaged up neatly for you to read in one convenient location. I am the ultimate Journal One-Stop Shop, aren't I? But enough about me (who said that?) --- let's see what you guys have been up to. Oh, and me too. I'm a guy like me!

Anteater is still doing his best to educate us on the forgotten genius of Gino Vanelli in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html

while down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...seur-cave.html Briks is listening to some more classic albums he has never heard (wonder where he got that idea?) with the Stones and the Kinks getting the spotlight

and Butthead is describing what I can only assume to be a typical night out for him in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...therapy-s.html. No music yet, but stay tuned, he says: it's on the way.

A new journal this week as Deviouz tells us http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ou-want-d.html and it seems we do. First up, after a brief introduction, is a very interesting description of what sounds to be a very interesting album. Great start.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...chameleon.html takes us back to the sights, sounds and happenings of the last year of the twentieth century. That's right, DJ Chameleon is only nineteen years ahead of Unknown Soldier, checking out 1999. I bet he partied like it was, too, When it was. If you know what I mean.

Another pile of eclectic and diverse albums coming your way courtesy of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ening-log.html, with Donso, Cave In, Hum and, er, Robbie Williams, to name but a few. And a couple of Japanese ones, but I ain't even gonna try writing their names!

Being a Seattle boy, you'd certainly expect Ki to talk about Nirvana in his series on bands from his hometown, and this week he does. Be kind; he's not feeling too well but has still managed to put an article together for us in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html. Hope you feel better soon man!

There's another – the last apparently --- installment of “Jazz for Trollheart” in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-journal.html, though Neapolitan may be rebranding and continuing it, he says. Neap, I will be listening, but I just need to get so many other things out of the way first. Not least this update!

People can and do say that “Nevermind” was one of the defining albums of the nineties (also responsible for making two words into one!) but how can you not have heard the defining album of the seventies, Powerstars? Well, it's one of the “classic albums he's never heard” --- hey! Is this deja vu or what? --- in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sicalness.html this week.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...reen-13-a.html is reflecting on some “Toldeo '71 memories” this week, and showcasing some ads for some of the films Screen is featuring, has featured or will be featuring. Presumably. If you like grindhouse, apparently, this is the place to be.

I'm slowly beginning to get back up to speed with my journals, and in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html you'll find reviews of albums by The Reasoning and Journey, while http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html has more Red Dwarf and Supernatural, plus a new section in which I pick apart the bad plot holes in the movies I've seen. First up: “Flightplan”. Finally http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ver-heard.html is back, and I'm listening to Yes's “Close to the edge” for the first time, and seemingly pushing some people close to their edge! Next week, expect the return of “Trollheart's Psychic Reviews”. Yeah I know: I really made your day, didn't I?

Let there be rock! And metal! But mostly metal... Unknown Soldier is retreading the glory days of the NWOBHM in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html, where 1980 sees the rise of bands like Def Leppard, Saxon and The Michael Schenker Group, or MSG as we liked to call them. Not to be confused with food ingredients!

Leaving us with http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...who-thing.html where, while he waits for a particular DVD to pop through his letterbox, Urban is reviewing “Time and the Rani”, with his usual mix of sarcasm, comedy and razor-sharp wit coupled with an almost anorak-like knowledge of the facts!

And that's it for another update. See you all in a week's time.
Till then,
Toodles!

YorkeDaddy 01-26-2014 02:44 PM

:o nothing about yorkedaddy's groundbreaking new journal???

Trollheart 01-26-2014 04:40 PM

Sorry about that. Somehow I thought I had covered it last week. Must have been a dream... Pressures of work you know. I'm only including the first entry as strictly speaking your album entry came in past the deadline, and anyway I'll need something for next week's update, in case you don't get to write any more before next Sunday. Again, sorry for the omission: just totally slipped by. Hope the entry below makes up for it.

Can some kind mod please add this (just what follows) to the main entry for this week? Thanks

Pipping even Urban to the finishing line this week, our own virtuoso YorkeDaddy is back with his third journal, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-personal.html, and the first one he's looking at is Broken Social Scene. Expect the usual deep ruminations and dissertations from this man who not only is a fantastic composer but one hell of a writer too. Could make next year's awards a close-run thing...

Goofle 01-26-2014 04:45 PM

I recently came to the realisation that I essentially like pretty much everything I hear.

Powerstars 01-28-2014 12:25 PM

Trollheart, let's get something straight. I have MANY classic albums I have not yet heard. I mean, I've not listened to a single Pink Floyd record!

You are banished to the Zone of Eternal Night until such time as you at least --- at least! --- experience the glory that is "Dark side of the moon", "Meddle", "Wish you were here" or "The wall". Preferably all four. And the rest.

Animals is easily my favorite Floyd album.

Alright, so we've established I need to listen to the Floyd. I should open a "Turn Powers on to Pink Floyd" journal in the vein of Janzsoon.

I envy you. Have no idea if its a grower or whatever because at this point I know every word and note so well I can play it in my head anytime I want.

It baffles me that some people on a dedicated music forum have never heard the bulk of Pink Floyd's catalog. I mean they're about as essential as The Beatles. You don't even have to like them, you just have to listen to it all.

I'd agree but in less strong terms. I mean, so the Beatles may be music legends but I've never heard one of their albums. Nor do I want to. I don't care for that sort of music, never mind the "essential contribution to music" they made. I don't take that away from them, but just in the same way as I would never listen to an Elvis record, I don't see why everyone is expected to listen to Floyd. No band is that essential, and even if they are, there are bound to be those who haven't heard them or, having heard them, don't like them. That's what musical diversity is all about.

That said, anyone who doesn't listen to Floyd is an alien and should be deported back to their home planet...

Update for week ending February 2 2014

February is here! Valentine's is on the way! Clear those halls and widen the doors for all those cards. And worry not: there will not be a repeat of Stacey-Lynn's 100 favourite Love Songs this year! What WAS that girl thinking?

But what is happening in the many low-rent hovels and seedy motels down in Journaltown? Why, I thought you'd never ask...

Anteater comes to the end of his odyssey through the wild and wonderful world of Gino Vanelli in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html

while Briks is ripping me off one more time with a cpy of my “Bitesize” reviews, looking at an album by some band called Mineral. Hey, if he thinks my fearless lawyers won't venture into the depths of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...seur-cave.html ... well, he's right apparently. Bunch of pansies I have working for me! Don't know why I pay them. Still, he can't stay in there forever... ;)

There's something of a “cloud” (cough!) hanging over DJ this week, as he has been locked out of his data by the Internet Gods, so you won't get http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...chameleon.html until after Friday next. We'll be waiting man! Hope it all sorts itself out.

More from http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ening-log.html with albums from The Ohh Sees, Bad Plugs and Self Defense Family among the music in Goofle's headphones this week.

Having recovered from his bout of illness, Ki is back firing on all cylinders and reviewing Foo Fighters in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html and thinking of venturing down those Country roads, apparently. Stay turned for Willie Nelson, he says. Interesting.

Neapolitan has a tribute to the late Pete Seeger in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-journal.html and is also commenting on the sterling work Urban is doing on his. Quite right too, Neap --- er, sorry, Neo! What is this? The Matrix?? ;)

Powerstars thought I was joking about legal action. Well, go visit http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sicalness.html and see if I was joking! You watching this, Briks? Huh? Huh?

Undertaking quite a few projects myself, not least of which is listening to and reviewing all 100 of the Top 100 Prog Albums of 2013, as chosen by Progarchives, in my thread “Trollheart's Fortress of Prog”, so although I've tried to keep my journals updated it's been tough. Over at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html there's the first ever instance of my merging two sections, with Train's “California 37” fitting the bill for both “Nice song ... shame about the album!” and “More than words”. New sections also due up soon. Third episode of “Mayday” is up now at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html, while as promised/threatened last week, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...m-reviews.html returns with a really strange little band called Stumbleine...

Things are beginning to heat up now as Unknown Soldier raids the archives of the NWOBHM and explores 1980 in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html with great albums from Saxon and Angel Witch. What a great time for metal that was!

Urban's really putting in some work in his journals this week. First off, in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...who-thing.html there's the long-awaited (!) “Timelash”, while jumping on the “get Trollheart” bandwagon, he's slagging off my reviewed album covers and dissing my music in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-stuff.html --- you know, the usual you expect from this guy! Not only that though, he's also enthusing (!) abotu a new pop band called Santamaria (I know you love them really Urban!) and of course continuing his review of “1001 songs you must hear before you die.”

YorkeDaddy takes us out this week, and again I apologise for leaving the opening entries from his new journal out last week. This week, in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-personal.html he's ranting about songs while drunk. Actually, read on a little further...

Yep. In a bid to make it up to him for overlooking his journal last week, and also because it's damn funny, and only just beat Urban's in-depth review of Santamaria's “Virtual” album by a hair, YorkeDaddy is my choice for
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
Probably best read when you too are drunk. Or maybe not. This man has a bright future!

Hello there, and welcome to Drunken Ramblings With Yorkedaddy, where I pick something and ramble about it whilst drunk. And today, I'm going to ramble about another one of my favorite songs ever and why it should be one of your favorite songs ever too even though it sucks.

First off, some history behind the band. Bombay Bicycle Club is a few British blokes that have released three albums so far, and all of them are absolutely awful. I mean frankly this is some seriously uninteresting attempts at indie folk and there's only three minutes and fifty-five seconds out of their whole catalog that has ever truly interested me, and it's this song right here.

Now I don't know how the hell stuff like this happens, and by stuff like this I mean crappy bands coming up with impeccable tunes. Maybe an actually good songwriter came up to them with the idea for this song and was like hey, do this. And then they did it, and I love the **** out of it.

The first few seconds you are greeted with the coolest bouncy piano riff I've ever heard, and it's frankly the crux of the song. The bridge fades it in along with some thick bass and it's just overwhelmingly cool for some reason, despite the fact that this band is ass in every other realm.

The lyrics are actually really cool. "Weight is coming off/Soaring high/Pleading you to stay/Come alive" is the opening verse which accompanies the piano riff. All of it just invokes feelings of pure joy and nostalgia in me. It just makes me want to bop my head and revel in everything in life that makes me happy, despite me having no idea what it's actually supposed to be about. Why is the song called "Shuffle"? I have no idea, because it makes no damn sense because the dudes in this band are not actually smart and they got lucky to make such a sweet ****ing song.

"Once you get the feeling, it/Wants you back for more/Says it's gonna heal it, but/You won't make the call/One step back you're leaving it/Now it's moving on/Why won't you believe in it/'till it's gone?"

I think these guys are talking about themselves here. Once you get the feeling it wants you back for more is referring to this song. I feel like I want to listen to this song all the damn time, and I keep thinking I'm going to actually like this band ("Says it's gonna heal it but you won't make the call"), but I never actually do like them ("One step back, you're leaving it, now it's moving on") and I refuse to accept that they actually deserve to take the credit for writing such a good song ("Why won't you believe in it"), but then I realize that maybe I'm taking such a wonderful tune for granted ("'till it's gone?") and then I give Bombay Bicycle Club the proper credit it deserves.

So kudos to you, Bombay Bicycle Club. Your track, "Shuffle," which is the sixth track on your album "A Different Kind of Fix," is one of my favorite songs I've ever heard. It's bouncy, joyous, and everything I love about music. I can close my eyes and listen to it and feel happy as that piano riff echoes through my brain.

But everything else you've made sucks dick.

#journaloftheyear2014

And so we reach the end of the first Journal Update for February. I've been watching a lot of Charlie Brooker recently, so taking a leaf from his book, instead of my usual rambling closing address I'll just say fuck off out of my thread.

Till next week,
Toodles!

Isbjørn 02-02-2014 01:59 PM

Another excellent entry, Trollheart! ;)
Don't worry, I'm done ripping off Power... eh... you? However, I think I'll continue "borrowing" some of your stuff for my own entries, since I think they could improve the quality of my reviews. Minor things, of course, don't want to end up like Powerstars!

I remember trying to listen to Dark Side of the Moon once, and got bored about halfway through. Except for "Comfortably Numb" I've never heard a Pink Floyd song that I thought was more than average. "Comfortably Numb" is pretty fantastic though.

At least you listened and gave it a shot and know what they're like.

In other news, the secret to winning the post of the week is just getting drunk and then writing about the songs I like to listen to?! I should do that more often! :P

I know my updates haven't been as frequent. Been very busy with work and other things. May get an update or two in this week.

Trollheart 02-09-2014 12:55 PM

Update for week ending February 9 2014

Interestingly, perhaps a little sadly, I find looking down the list of updates this week that I'm all over the place and am by far the one with the most done on his journal, but then considering how lax I've been in recent weeks I'm just about making up for lost time. As for the rest, well read on...

Down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...seur-cave.html, Briks is “Prepared for the worst” in a new series, I assume, he's starting, which kicks off with Green Day. Interesting idea.

Powerstars is about to get into something of a Pink Floyd kick, I believe. No reviews yet but once he clears things with my lawyers he should be on his way. Keep your eyes on http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sicalness.html

Which takes us to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...reen-13-a.html, where Screen is looking at some, er, sex ed movies as well as titles like “Suspiria”, “A taste of blood” and “Deep red.” Not for the squeamish! Like me... :shycouch:

And that, ladies and gentlebeings, leads us to my somewhat mega-update for this week. First, in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html there's a new section called “Swan song”, in which I look at the final album released by a band or artiste, kicking off with Genesis' farewell shot, the “lost review” of Carcass's “Heartwork” that went missing during Metal Month, and I dip my toes in the bubbly waters of chart music as I take on a review of Britney's new one.

There are a lot of new things coming very soon in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html, including Robin of Sherwood, Life on Mars, The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Father Ted. Did I not mention Father Ted? Father Ted is coming too. For now, there's a really important episode of Babylon 5 to get your teeth into, while http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html finally makes its return with a look at “Aeneid” by Heimdall, and one more of those http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ver-heard.html to chalk off the list, as I discover the delights of Marvin Gaye's “What's going on”, thanks to Surell!

Urban's still plugging away at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...who-thing.html, with a look at the 2011 Christmas special and also a feature on how the Beatles and Doctor Who met. Sort of. Then in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-stuff.html you'll never guess the name of the album he wants to see released...

After his success with his “Drunken ramblings” last week, seems YorkeDaddy is putting the bottle to one side and writing some sobre ramblings, and this time in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-personal.html he's on about the debut album from Chvrches, which I can attest is absolutely excellent! Oh, but more importantly than that, he's hinted at the release of a new cloudcover album! What? You haven't heard “Frownland?” Give me one reason why I should not Unfriend you, right away! What? I'm not on Facebook? Fair enough. Give me one reason why I should not join Facebook, Friend you, and immediately Unfriend... yeah look it's just easier --- and will make you a lot happier --- to listen to his album. Go download it now. You can thank me later.

Not much point in choosing a post of the week this week, as most of the posts are mine! Well not all but yeah, the lion's share. And self-praise, as we know, is no praise. So where are the rest of you eh? I see Unknown Soldier has been away, and it's the first week we haven't had an entry from Ki, but come on! Butthead! Ant! DJ! Let's hear from you guys in the coming week, yeah? And Janszoon, it would be great to read another episode from your journal, hint hint!

Well we can but hope.
Until next week,
Toodles!

Key 02-09-2014 03:07 PM

Sorry man, I tried. But after being sick and getting a new position at work, my schedule has been all over the place. Things will get back to normal in the next week so expect some more updates. I've got a band with a few albums that I am eager to discuss.

butthead aka 216 02-09-2014 07:01 PM

I got a good one comin soon. I'm just never home anymore so I'm always mobile but a new post is comin

Trollheart 02-09-2014 07:08 PM

Everyone understands man. You've done more than enough to keep Journaltown going when others were sitting on their big fat ahhhh you get a free pass, no question.
