I completely agree, as I already said. Graphics are not my strong point. That chart is the Caravaggio to my LS Lowry! I'm intrigued also as to how you're awarding points, PS. Oh, and you should definitely change your username to Pokerstars!

I don't know. Perhaps it may have been for something I didn't factor in last week. Or it could have been a small single post as a reply.

Yup! Promote gambling to the kiddies! :D

Thanks to the strong support, this is gonna keep on going!

Powerstars 08-03-2013 04:42 PM

Sorry guys, this week's league table might be a day late. It's harder than I expected to be honest, but I'mma keep going.

Powerstars 08-04-2013 11:41 AM

Never mind, I got the table done.

Wolverine once again, with Trollheart right behind her, but who ended up at number 3? The guy who updated again...Batlord. PRAISE ME BATLORD. KNEEL. Ahem, anyways, rounding out the top 5 are Urban and Unknown, who ties with YorkeDaddy. At number 10 we have Trollheart again, with me, Engine, and Bulldog in the top 15. Tied for 16 are Phonographic Memory, and a Tree that enjoys to romp through Neo-Folk. Good luck to everyone next week and congrats to our top 3~

Update for week ending August 4 2013

A few changes in the format this week. Well, not that many really. Lots of updates, no new journals this particular week but some excellent entries, while one or two journals go unattended, but we know the writers are hard at work on some masterpiece and will only let it be seen once it's finished.

So what about the journals that have been updated? You know, I'm glad you asked...

Anteater
is still proclaiming the merits of Crimson Glory in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html: probably should really give them a listen, as soon as I get a spare minute...

After taking a break last week, The Batlord is back firing on all cylinders with three chapters of "The return of the Kings of Metal", so head on down to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...t-schemes.html and get reading! No poseurs need apply...

DJ Chameleon
is hitting "the Razor's Edge" hard this week, with reviews of albums from Gogol Bordello, Selena Gomez and Hands for Houses. He's also throwing in a new section, "Random thoughts", so get http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...chameleon.html and see what it's all about!

Bone Thugs N Harmony and Bus Driver both figure in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...dox-music.html

while Ki is reviewing an album by Tesseract and also considering whether or not Smashing Pumpkins are "Worth the Hype" (TM) in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html

and LadyisLingering plays some more extracts from her http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ic-memory.html for us, with T. Rex (surprise, surprise!), Genesis, Bobby Fuller and Billy Idol, to name but a few. Hope you'll be back fully online soon, Lil!

One of our other leading ladies, Lateralus has written a review of a gig she went to by Karnivool, and it forms part of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...anderings.html, which are always good to hear.

Mondo Bungle
is considering a month now in his new home, while also "Turning the Spotlight on" John Zorn. Get some http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...istortion.html in your life!

Powerstars is I think finding that maintaining the League Table is not as easy a job as it may seem. And don't forget, I used to have to do that AND write this update PLUS maintain four journals! Still, best of luck to him with and he's certainly made a great start. In http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sicalness.html this week he has an interesting cover version of the Eagles' classic, "Hotel California". Can't say I love it, but it is different, I'll give it that.

Haven't been doing much work myself recently, which makes me guilty when I see the workload of the likes of Unknown Soldier or DJ, but hey, I've had other things to do. Still managed to get a new section into http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html called M*U*S*H (geddit?) which stands for Melancholy Unbelievably Slushy Heartbreakers, in other words, slow songs deconstructed. Sort of. Starting off with one from Gloria "Oye oye oye!" Estefan. Pickings have been a little slim over at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html too, with only the second episode of "House of cards" to draw people in. Nothing in either of my other two journals: oh the shame of it!

Just to make me feel even worse, Unknown Soldier seems to have been working flat out this week! As he begins his journey into 1977 there's music from BOC, Riot, Legs Diamond and Ted Nugent! Ah, the seventies! Tis well I remember them! Catch up on http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html here.

Now, the burning question of our time, as I'm sure you all know, is, is Urban getting old? His last few journal entries have been about the "Now" series of crappy pop singles that have blighted the charts ever since the late eighties, in addition to praising Sir Cliff and now this week he's having fond memories about Tom Jones! Hey, has the big guy finally succumbed to old age? Says the guy who just turned fifty! Well no matter what his journal is always a good and entertaining read, and you can, as Black Adder says, get it here. http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-stuff.html

Some pretty personal stuff in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-tripping.html, where Wolverine (I'm just going to shorten her name to that for now if that's ok) is doing a track-by-track review of the Lucius EP by Lucius, and let me say, it's something everyone should read.

This week's Showcase may in fact be the last one for a while. It may seem unlikely, but I appear to have featured everyone's journal now, and hopefully have drawn attention to those which deserved more readers. Mind you, if you feel your journal has been missed out and would like to be featured in the Showcase drop me a PM. I'm also not running the "Young guns and old hands" this week for pretty much the same reason. I may let this become more a monthly thing to see what develops. The last thing I want is saturation coverage or advertising simply for the sake of it. I want to bring your notice to journals that should be noticed, not just "the ones that are left". So this will be the last for a little while, but I think it's very well deserved.

http://www.musicbanter.com/avatars/6...ine=1357440423
A man who makes no secret of his love (obsession?) of the Beatles, Powerstars is one of those who has not been here years, and yet in some ways it seems like he has. His journal is mostly reviews, but there's nothing wrong with that, and he is trying to flesh it out a bit more. What does shine through is both his love of music and writing, and his genuine interest in this place, proven by his taking over of the thankless task of maintaining and running the League Table, on which I'm sure he'll do a better job than I.

As I say, he's a Beatles fan first (and second, and third) and so it would be remiss of me not to point you in the direction of his excellent review of one of their more famous albums. It's not for me, but that doesn't mean it doesn't provide one heck of a read. And if you're a fan, well then you'll enjoy it all the more!

Review #007 - "Let It Be" by The Beatles

1970 was a hard year for The Beatles. Having just recorded and released Abbey Road after suffering through the hellish "Get Back" sessions, the band's future looked bleak. One thing was for sure: They had to call in someone to make something of the trainwreck that was the "Get Back" sessions. They called in Phil Spector, infamous for his "Wall Of Sound" approach.

When Paul McCartney first heard Spector's version of "The Long And Winding Road," he was furious. It went completely against the stripped-down sound that the original song, and album, for that matter, was supposed to have. He angrily called Spector and demanded that he change it back. He didn't. So, was this album any good? Or was it The Beatle's darkest hour. Let's find out.

1. Two Of Us
Opening with a bit of studio banter from John, this first song really has more of the "raw and real" feel than any other song on the album. McCartney wrote this, presumably about his wife at the time, Linda, though for whatever reason, John barged in one time and claimed he wrote it. A lot of fans interpret it as being about John and Paul, which is an easy assumption, they sing it together. Overall, a real solid track

2. Dig A Pony
Cool, groovy lil' track. The only new song that John wrote specifically for this album ("Across The Universe" was written 2 years prior, "One After 909" was written WAY back before the Beatles hit it big, John's part of "I've Got A Feeling" was also written 2 years prior), the track consist of word salad lyrics that Lennon later dismissed as garbage. Doesn't matter John, you may not like it, but this song is instrumentally tight and generally good.

3. Across The Universe
Now for a taste of the over-production. I feel this song is better when it's not orchestrated. John said that it was a lousy track...of a great song. This is one of his songs that he still loved late into his life. He just felt it hadn't been recorded properly. The guitars were out of tune, he said, and so was his voice. I personally still love it though, but I felt 2003's "Let It Be Naked" got the best take on the lousy take.

4. I Me Mine
Ah, George. Good ol' George. Great song, but once again plagued by overproduction. Not only is there an unneeded orchestra, but Phil Spector took the track and looped a section over again to make the song longer. YOU DON'T DO THAT TO THE BEATLES! THE BEATLES ARE SACRED! Still, one of the best songs on the album, and one of George's best cuts with the Beatles. While The Beatles considered it filler, George was smart enough to know it was good, and his autobiography, named after the song, proves that he retained a liking to it.

5. Dig It
This song just makes me feel sad whenever I listen to it. Not because it's a sad song or anything, but because of all the wasted potential. It was a jam session, that originally lasted 7 minutes. They actually went and recorded it again, which lasted 12 and a half minutes. On the original "Get Back" album it was supposed to be cut down to 5 minutes. We get 30 seconds of it here. Then, when "Let It Be Naked" was released, it was removed entirely. Why, Phil Spector? Why would you cut it down when it had so much potential?

6. Let It Be
The title track also suffers from overproduction with an unneeded orchestra. Still, it is one of the Beatles' signature songs, and easily recognizable.

7. Maggie Mae
More filler, although I can say at the very least that it wasn't cut down, just short to begin with. Come to think of it, why did Phil Spector make "I Me Mine" longer, only to include 2 short filler tunes. Back to the song, it's John and Paul running through an old Liverpool standard, nothing special.

8. I've Got A Feeling
My favorite song on the album, this is possibly the last time John and Paul wrote a song together. It is not plagued by overproduction, it just feels right. Combining John and Paul's concepts for songs in a perfect way, this song may be too perfect for any more words. Just listen to it now.

9. One After 909
An old Beatles number that they didn't think was good enough to include on any of their albums until this one. I disagree. It really showcases the Beatle's influences in the most Beatley way. Listening to the 1963 version on "Anthology," I can tell you that they reinvented this song. They made it so much better and it became something truly great. Paul remembers it as not a great song, but a great favorite of his.

10. The Long And Winding Road
Ugh! Phil Spector turned this jazzy tune into a more easy listening song. This is not a good thing. You can't ruin this song, but Phil Spector came close...and his version became the hit! Listening to the "Let It Be...Naked" version just kind of makes me angry at how he drowned out the original drums, guitar, and even McCartney's voice! The anthology version is also less easy listening, but more spacey and folkish, which is a really cool sound. I can see how Paul would've been mad with what he did to this version. It's a meh take on a stellar song.

11. For You Blue
Another song that Spector (thankfully) didn't try orchestrate. Bluesy tune, I was completely obsessed with it for a time. As George puts it, it's a simple 12-bar song. Simply, catchy, and damn good. I really love the lap steel solo by John.

12. Get Back
The original title track, Spector thankfully left this one pretty much as is, although I prefer the single version by a small margin. This one is a good note to end on though and overall, there wasn't much he could've done to ruin this song anyways.

Conclusion: Some songs suffer just a bit from Spectorization ("I Me Mine," "Across The Universe"), while others are drowning in it ("The Long And Winding Road"), while others yet suffer none at all ("Dig A Pony," "Get Back," etc.) It's a good album, but unbalanced and suffering bad production. Overall though, Phil Spector can decrease the quality, but he will never ruin the Beatles

Final Score: 78/100 (Go, Johnny, Go)

So that wraps up another journal update. As I said in the introduction, there are notable absences in some journals this week, but that's ok: people need to recharge and I'm sure once the reviews are done or the ideas sorted out they'll all be back with a vengeance. Not everyone updates every week (sometimes even I find it hard) but to quote the Wise Old Man of the forum, Urban: "Quality, not quantity". How right he is. So take your time, guys and gals, and we'll breathlessly await the wondrous creations you have in store for us. What do you mean, you haven't any wondrous creations? Well, create some! Right away please! ;)

Now if you'll excuse me it's way past my naptime. Where's my cup of warm milk? Ahhh...

Till next week, then.
Toodles!

Oh my gosh. Thank you so much for the mention and for the spotlight. You don't know how much it means to me. I will continue maintaining both my journal and the table not just for Trollheart, but for everyone!

I LOVE YOU GUYS.

Oh, okay. Fair enough; I've had that same problem myself. Just uploaded my review of "Downfall" and it is over 42,000 chars long, so had also to be posted in three parts. Still, looks good! :thumb:

Update for week ending August 11 2013

Allright, step lively there! Stick with me and please, no flash photography. We need to protect the copyright of everyone who lives here. You do not want to have to face Mister Burns's legal team! Yes, that's it, on up to the desk there, and make sure you present your passport. Now, everyone accounted for? Grand. Follow me then as we take another tour of the wonderful land we call Journal! Some of you, of course, have been here many times, for others it may be your first visit. So what has been happening this week at the Ideas Factory? With apologies to George Lucas... :shycouch:

Anteater is wrapping up the Crimson Glory story (sorry) in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html: wonder what he has for us next? One thing is not in doubt, and that is that it will be great.

"The return of the Kings of Metal" is coming close to a climax (oh he'd just love that, wouldn't he? Sexual innuendo in the review of his journal!) so if you're not up to speed on The Batlord's inspired writing yet then get on down to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...t-schemes.html and breathe it in, people!

The Big3 is back http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ming-moon.html and this time he's screaming about Clutch, who he says are an underrated band and have a lot to offer. Check out his journal to see what else he has to say about them.

Lot of people who haven't written for a while coming back this week with entries, none more welcome than Big Ears, who's doing a great review of Genesis's seminal "Selling England by the pound" in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...s-journal.html

And also back is Kay! Yay! Well, not quite, but she's certainly posting about posting, and says we can expect her next review soon in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...s-journal.html --- waiting breathlessly, girl!

Ki has a song stuck in his head. What song is it? Well, to find out you're going to have to mouseify this link http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html. And while you're there you can also read his entry on video game music ("Robot Unicorn Attack 2"? Who couldn't love that title!)

"The top 10 music listening experiences" for Mondo Bungle are on offer this week in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...istortion.html, along with some personal stuff about his own life. If you like Disembowellment (not literally, of course!), Planning for Burial (again, not literally) and Slint among others head in his direction.

There's another Song Overthinker in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sicalness.html

And even I've been trying to up the quota myself, so in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html there's a new section called "The Hook", a return for "Variations on a theme" as well as another "Album from Hell", and in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html there's more Frasier as well as my review of the incredible film "Downfall" ("Der Untergang") chronicling the last days of Hitler. If you haven't seen it, you should remedy that immediately! Also squeezing in a review of the latest album from Visions of Atlantis in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html and listening to more of those http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ver-heard.html, this time it's the Sisters of Mercy and Neutral Milk Hotel.

1977 continues to be a good year for hard rock and heavy metal, and Unknown Soldier's http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html this week looks at important albums from that year from Judas Priest and Aerosmith.

Continuing her track-by-track review of the Lucius EP, Wolverine is up to track four now in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-tripping.html: man, you can just feel the love she has for this band in her writing!

YorkeDaddy
has started releasing tracks from the soon-to-be unleashed album from his band, which interestingly enough bears the same name as that of one of our members! In other news, I've been asked to review the album so that will be a worldwide exclusive, stay tuned for it. For now, you can hear some of the music here http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sterpiece.html, with more to come. Oh, and you can also catch the freeaky album cover they made!

http://www.trollheart.com/kroy-small.jpg
As I mentioned last week, I won't be doing any more Showcases for a while, as I don't want to cheapen the section by just choosing whatever's left that I haven't yet done, and that's no slight on anyone who hasn't been featured. The Showcase is meant to throw a spotlight on a particularly good journal, and while everyone here writes well and on interesting subjects, the ones that have really impressed me have been those I've chosen for the Showcase and now I need to wait till some other incredible talent (yeah, you lot out there!) come up with something that catches my attention.

http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
For now then, I'm going to fall back on an old idea and choose my Post of the Week. This can be from any journal, young or old, and can have been written any time; it doesn't have to have been written this week, or even this year. It can be on any subject but will be something either very different, very deep or just very well written and from the heart. For my first selection I'd like to take this very personal offering from Mondo Bungle, which he wrote this week.

We weren't even living in our new house for four months when I came home late one day to my dad sitting alone in the living room. "You'd better start packing your sh*t," he said, "we've got till the end of this week." Things haven't worked out in a while.

Lately life has been so stressful. I can't recall the last time I was truly happy or at ease. I've wanted to find solace in companionship, but my brain is forcing me to think that my friends don't want me around. I don't know how they feel about me sometimes. I've always felt removed from the group. I'd still like one more chance to hang out before I leave. After my overwhelming surge of emotion and loss of control last Saturday, (it may very well have been a mental breakdown) I've grown more and more depressed. I'm not looking forward to moving to a new town at all. My whole life is here.

I feel like I'm losing it. I can't sleep to well, my mood is shifting rapidly. Each day has been interweaved with moments of extreme depression, severe anxiety, and violent anger. I have no one to turn to. I'd wish to go back in time, but I'd always know that this is the future.

I was hoping for a better summer. WHY THE F*CK DOES SHI*T HAVE TO SUCK. maybe moving will be good, no one will know me in a new town.

I NEED DRUGS AND ALCOHOL F*CK DAMN IT F*CK.

People care more than I think...........why is my brain a piece of sh*t? why won't you let me be happy? Deep down somewhere I know that my friends care about me, but stupid things make you push those thoughts away.

I told a friend I would be leaving, and he said they all were gonna throw me a party

I knew my friends cared. I should try to understand that they all have jobs now, and I don't. But our little get together was fun. I was considerably more drunk the next morning though, after making like ten delicious vodka cranberries. I got a ride to my old house but my dad was at a storage unit. I misunderstood him on the phone since I was so drunk. We had to free buffet coupons, so we ate like kings that night, we probably wouldn't have much for a while afterwards.

I'm living in a garage, f*ck yeah! I haven't taken a shower in a week and a half, and I just can't get enough stale bread. THINGS ARE SOOOO GREAT. At least I'm leaving soon.

I'm leaving tomorrow, so today I went up to my friends' neighborhood for one last day. I took a shower first, because I desperately needed one. We just sat around talking that afternoon, I left before it got dark.

That's about as good a summary as the last two-ish weeks in Reno as any, but it was the week before where emotions really started to run high.

And finally...
http://www.trollheart.com/crypt2.png
Already famous for his "25 albums you should hear" journal, Janszoon wrapped that up --- rather courageously and pragmatically, I thought: I would have been tempted to have stretched it out and probably delayed ending it --- and then began http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sible-man.html, in the inimitable way only he can, thinking of things only he does and working out concepts few if any of us would even think of attempting. Sadly, in one way, it's now to be found on page three of the journals section, having been last updated , but in other ways this is not such a bad thing, taken overall, as this has occurred mostly due to the plethora of new journals that have started up since the lonly insubstantial one last trod the murky night streets in the rain.

Nevertheless, it ranks as one of the better journals certainly of this year, and I would hope that we haven't seen the last of it. I know everyone is busy and more often than not, a journal is not something that ranks high on anyone's list of priorities (unless they're really sad, like me), but I certainly hope that Janszoon manages to update this again some time soon. As I've said before, the music in itself doesn't interest me but that's secondary to Jansz's great and insightful writing. We need to hear more about the adventures of the Invisible Man. What about it, Jansz?

For those who have not yet read it, or even those who have, here's where it all started...

One night. Twelve hours. Twelve albums. One lonely, see-through bastard.

7:00 pm
Bud Powell—Time Waits: The Amazing Bud Powell (1958)

The invisible man sits at a table by himself, munching on a bread roll. He loves this restaurant—the godfather booths, the mood lighting, the jazz on the speakers—the whole kit and caboodle just has such fantastic ambiance. Normally just being here makes him feel mellow and content, but tonight he's feeling kind of anxious, worrying if his date is going to show up. She's almost forty-five minutes late and he's starting to wonder if he's been stood up, or for that matter, if she even knew they were supposed to meet in the first place. It wouldn't be the first time that's happened—meeting someone he likes at a party only to discover later that she had mistaken him for a coat hanging on a door and assumed she was talking to the cute guy standing nearby in line for the bathroom. He's not generally a morose sort of person, he usually tries to see the bright side of things, but it's moments like this when his condition definitely feels like a burden. He slouches down in his chair and tries to immerse himself in the sounds of the bebop album that fills the air around him, Time Waits: The Amazing Bud Powell.

Like our transparent friend sitting alone in the the restaurant, this album is generally upbeat but with a depressive undercurrent running throughout that it fights very hard against. It opens with the latin-esque "Buster Rides Again", which is one of those swinging, upbeat songs where it's almost impossible to keep your body from moving while listening to it, due in a large part to the interplay between Powell's rhythmic keys and the shapeshifting patterns of drummer Philly Joe Jones. The second track, "Sub City" is a little more mellow, but still a toe-tapping bebop classic, with somebody, probably Powell, off-mic scatting nonsense along with the melody. It's not until track number three, the title track, that the album slumps down into melancholy. Sure it tries to sound simply relaxed, but the subtly dissonant, off-kilter piano staggers reveal a heart that belongs more to the sad sack passed out at the bar than the hipster smoking a cigarette by the stage. Once revealed, the sullen soul of this album can't hide itself despite it's best stabs at being cheery. On the subsequent tracks, "Marmelade", "Monopoly" and "John's Abbey", for example, the tunes pump along in groovy bop fashion, but those off-mic vocals show up again, sounding less like scatting and more like a testy drunk arguing with himself in an alley. Beyond that, on the last of those three, the entire piece feels like it's teetering on the verge of mania. On the one hand it's straight-up bebop, but on the other, like a lot of classic bop, its formalism barely able to contain itself within a mechanism that's flying out of control. In the end, the album turns introspective again with "Dry Soul", another late night rambler that sounds anything but dry.

The despondency that seeps in around the edges of this album is unfortunately no surprise. It was recorded late in Powell's career, when his alcoholism and personal baggage were just on the verge of obliterating his talent. His brother had died less than two years before, in the same Pennsylvania car wreck that killed legendary jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown, but even before that Powell was not the most stable of characters. He was abnormally sensitive to the effects of alcohol and sadly also came to be dependent on it. He spent several years of his life in mental institutions, overmedicated and subjected to electroshock therapy. The result was a shattered man. A genius on par with Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, but one who was so tragically broken that in end he died young—only eight years after this album—of tuberculosis, alcoholism and malnutrition, no longer even able to play piano like he used to.

So it's time once again to depart Journal Land, head to the border and check your passport, have it stamped and noted, and shuffle towards the waiting bus, taking one last longing glance back. You know, you can easily be a part of this vibrant, ideas-filled village. It's easy to join. You know how by now. And you'll always find friendly advice and help once you step beyond these gates. Why not join us? We're waiting for you.

That's it for another week. Stay tuned for Powerstars, who should be along later with this week's League Table. Till next week,
Toodles!

A new, slightly delayed league table. Apologies to DJ Chameleon, who I neglected to include last week.

Trollheart sends himself into the top spot, with Batlord also rising up. Big Ears also enters the table with his Rabbiting On journal.

Powerstars 08-15-2013 07:45 PM

I can't do this anymore. I'm sorry, the league table is stressful, so I will not be continuing on...if someone wants to take up the reigns, feel free. I will send you all you need...but, I'm sorry MB community. It's too hard for this user...STOP BOOING ME.

Burning Down 08-15-2013 08:37 PM

So Trollheart's not doing the league table anymore either?

He quit doing it and I offered to take it up...so probably not, no.

Sorry to hear that, Power me old mate, but as I said myself it's a massive committment, the moreso the way I was doing it, and when you have pretty much lukewarm response from people it becomes a question, unfortunately, of why bother? If people had loved the idea and been more engaged with the table I would have maybe kept going, but other than The Batlord, yourself and one or two other people nobody was interested, not even Screen13 who occupied the top spot for the entire tenure of my running of the table.

When it comes down to it, it's just too much work for no reward, and we all have better things to do. The final conclusion is that the only people really invested in the table are/were those who are/were compiling it, so it's just not worth all the hassle.

Sorry you didn't make it, but it really is a massive job isn't it? Fair play to you for trying though: at least now I know it wasn't just my innate wimpiness that stopped me. As Homer says: "You tried and you failed miserably. The lesson here is, never try." ;)

Update for week ending August 18 2013

With all the negative energy and feeling that's been flying around this week, it's time to return to the positive side of things, and give people credit for the work they're doing on their journals. We have not as many updates this week --- perhaps people have been distracted by the discussions going on in the Annoucements thread about how to improve the forum; I know I have --- but there are no less than three new journals opening so all is not lost. Let's investigate.

The lovely Lat -- sorry, Astronomer --- (hey! Look at that! You got moved to the top of the list due to your name change! Smart girl!) is back to favour us with another of her musical compositions in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...anderings.html (title of which may soon be changed to reflect her username, though I would personally suggest her tagline, "We are stardust", fits better) --- this lady has some serious talent!

The Batlord
really seems to be concentrating on just the one journal at the moment, but then with an epic like "The return of the Kings of Metal", I have no problem with that! Catch it down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...t-schemes.html

Big Ears is preaching about Armageddon! Well, not really: he's reviewing the only album by that band, which was self-titled. Yes, as usual, he's http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...s-journal.html and doing a fine job of it.

Blackdragon123 has started his first journal and is showing his devotion to and love of Black Sabbath, in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...th-tracks.html, so check it out!

Bulldog is tired, but still has time to write about one of his favourite gospel-influenced songs in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ouse-v-ii.html, which we're all glad to see the return of.

Ki's certainly been putting a lot of work into his journal, with a review of Porcupine Tree's "Fear of a blank planet" (good album; I reviewed it myself some time back), two more songs that are Stuck in His Head, a continuation of his 15 favourite albums, with Foghat this time under the microscope and a new section called "Heartbreak", where he looks at songs that tear your ... hey Ki! You been reading my journal? M*U*S*H mean anything to ya? ;) You'll get all of this, and most likely a lot more, here http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-infinity.html is another of those new journals I mentioned, wherein Mondo Bungle looks at the myths behind certain drugs, starting off with everything you wanted to know about LSD but were afraid to ask. Educational, informative and fun! Looks like this one could run and run!

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html this time features the return of the Irish music talent show "The Hit", as well as my own redux of Room 101: Music Version, featuring Steve Miller, and a return for "We'll be right back after the break", with those clever Carlsberg ads. And Metal Week is still coming. When? That would be telling, wouldn't it? But soon, soon. I'll soon be starting a review of the hit French horror drama "Les Revenants" (The Returned) and there's an intro to it in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html while I've finally bowed to public pressure and listened to Slayer! You'll find it and the Waterboys are now no longer [url[http://www.musicbanter.com/members-journal/69952-classic-albums-i-have-never-heard.html[/url].

216 has a second journal starting this week (remember his emo one? No? Why not? Oh yeah, cause he hasn't posted in it a while and it's on page two now. 216, you need to get on that, post haste!), this one all about hip-hop artists he's been introduced to via the popular plug.dj thingy everyone but me is talking about. He's starting off with Abdominal, so if hip-hop is your thing (minus the bunny hop) then head this way http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-sessions.html

Lizzy and UFO get the Unknown Soldier treatment in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html, as well as AC/DC

Wolverine tells us she is a compulsive list-maker (I think there are places that you can go that treat that, Steph!) and in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-tripping.html she's starting to compile some. This week it's her top five makeout songs. Extra points from me for including a Waits song! She's taking requests for lists, so whatcha waitin' for?

YorkeDaddy has an announcement! His band, Frownland (nothing to do with the member of the same name we all know and love!) have released their album. Want to know how to get it? Check http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sterpiece.html and watch my journal for a review soon.

And so to my
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
Because she seems to think her journal gets no attention, and because despite what she may think she's a really good writer, I'd like to select this post from back in 2009 as
http://www.musicbanter.com/avatars/3...ine=1360775431 began http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...s-journal.html, in the hope it may encourage her to post and update more.

13. Heatbeat - Vergatron
14. John O'Callaghan Ft Sarah Howells - Find Yourself
15. Cliffe Coenraad - Gone South

How to describe this album? Well in all honesty. It blew me away. Its everything i ever wanted as a massive electronica fan. Seriously.
At first i doubted it, it looks like a typical common Ibiza complication, but its so so much more.
what i find most facinating is the fact that i never knew most artists (still dont) but knew almost every song.
when i listen to an album, i judge it on how it makes me feel.
this album in particular makes me feel, excited, wanting to dance. its almost like a cliff hanger, but in music.
its undescribable! it leaves me wanting to hear more.
the sounds of it are almost hypnotic.
the thing i like most about these three
William Orbit - Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix)
Wow. Thats what. Ferry Corsten has taken William Orbits tune, and gave it some kind of twist that makes it sound totally amence.
it starts off slow and peacful, then builds up to a small backbeat sort of which is kind of electronic, it just keeps on building up and building up with all the electronic sounds, and turns into a repetitive tune, which never fails to make me want to dance like a complete idiot. this song doesnt have any vocals either, the vocals would drown out that amazing sound! i feel at the end. it just ends. which is the only thing i can pick on, Ferry needs a good anticlimax in there to leave people basically begging for more. Also, this version kicks Tiesto's danish ass.
Push - Strange World (Airwave Remix)
is the fact that its made entirely of a chillout, relaxing sound. with lots of buildups and anti climax's. which i like ;) this song doesnt have any vocals. im my opinion vocals would ruin it entitrely. well it kind of has these streched out deep "oooooh" 's through some parts. i dont really know how i feel about them or how to describe them. with all this combined the song is somewhat simple.. peaceful.. and simply amazing!
John O'Callaghan Ft Sarah Howells - Find Yourself
quoting myself on the first time i heard this "Awwwww Wit!"
a popular Scottish term which means to me, "that is fucking amazing!"
the start i admit is pretty low, yet fast, somewhat depressing beat.
then Sarah Howells vocals start, what a voice, sooo soothing/calming. i think she has been monitoring my life somehow. some parts describe me, then again, others don't.
After her vocals start the beat brightens up gradually, then at parts when shes singing, it beat drops right down, quietens.. and then goes with the context of the lyrics

Drawn into the backdrop here
you could fade, you could fade away
bright lights on a starless night
burn a hole in the dying day

Looking at life through a loaded gun
take your best shot, aim it at the sun
looking at life through a loaded gun
you know you'll find...

you'll find yourself, you'll find yourself alone
you'll find yourself, you'll find yourself alone
you'll find yourself, you'll find yourself alone
you'll find yourself, you'll find yourself alone

at the first stanza/paragraph/thingy, the beats rhythemical, it sounds basically like the only beat that exists, when im sure theres a small quiet natural beat kicking about, i concentrated so hard on it, im not sure if im imagining stuff or what :(. in the "You'll find yourself, you'll find yourself alone" part its a happy bouncing beat that exists amounst it, which i find ironic (right context?) as its a negative expression.

any thoughts, questions (: ?

That's it then for another week. Sad news in that Powerstars has discovered , like me, that the League Table is just too much work when fewer than a handful of people are interested in it, so he has dropped it and I would assume we won't see it again. Not that it will mean much to anyone. But he has my thanks and my admiration for trying to step into the breach. Pity it didn't work, but then, not all ideas can.

Remember, if you want to start a journal it's as easy as hitting NEW THREAD and writing what you want. Provided it's not just drivel the mods will approve it and you'll be a member of the journal community. It's up to you then as to what you do with that membership. Come on! We'd love to see you move in! There are loads of spare houses, and they're very reasonably priced. Plus we have excellent transport facilities.

Till next week then.
Toodles!

It is funny that you mention your heartbreak section because when I posted the introduction to that sort of section to my journal, I then went and read your journal entries only to stumble upon what was the same concept. I had not known that prior to making it a part of my journal. Great minds think alike I suppose.

Update for week ending August 25 2013

And so August shuffles off out the door, and September claps its hands together and plots our downfall with winter and the dreaded "C" word looming ever closer. One thing I do like about the end of August is that the kids go back to school. Now don't get me wrong: I like kids --- not sure I could finish a whole one, mind you --- but after three months of screaming, shouting, laughing and playing I'm about all summered out. And the kids are worse! ;) I know they all hate going back to school, but I for one am looking forward to some peace and quiet, where I can write without the incessant strains of whatever chart sensation is popular blasting at brain-melting volume from next door. I mean, if I can hear it that loud out here, what can it be like inside the house?

Anyway, enough of my problems. Time for the last update of August, as we head towards the opening of winter season here in Journal Land.

Another one to take the step across the boundary into the world of movies in the wake of the groundbreaking Couch Potato's frontiersmanlike example, Anteater is looking at "Tough guys don't dance" in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html and he has lots of nice things to say about it.

Hugh Laurie? You know, that's what you get when you take http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...chameleon.html! Well, whom am I to talk? I reviewed William Shatner's album! Two trips out onto the Razor's Edge this week for the everychanging one, and if you want to know who the other one is, well just mousify the above link! Do it now!

Ki's been busy again! When he says http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html he really seems to mean it! Lots going on this week, including a "look into the future", more Heartbreak, the continuation of his favourite fifteen albums and his Last.FM list. Sure why would you not check it out?

And the same goes for his better half. LadyisLingering has her http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ic-memory.html back up and firing, and she's looking at music from John Lennon, Suede, Steve Miller and Human League to name but a few.

Working as hard as I can on my own journals while also writing "The Marillion Story" (whaddya mean, you've never seen it? Check the prog subforum...) I've managed to include a review of Meat Loaf's third stab at the Bat out of Hell franchise, bring back the culture into your life with some superb classical music while also looking at another "Two sides of the same coin". Oh, and getting Metal Month ready too. Yeah, it's no longer Metal Week: it's been extended! So watch for it! No, really: I'm putting a lot of work into it, so I expect you to read it. Please?

Over at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html we've hit up another episode of "The Onedin Line" as well as one from "The New Statesman" (which is now approaching the end of season one) and watch out for "Futurama" starting next week! Bitesize will also be back next week, but for now I'm concentrating on just the three journals and after the not-quite-as-bad-as-I-thought-it-would-be-but-still ordeal of listening to Slayer, one of those http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ver-heard.html this week is the Waterboys' opus "Fisherman's blues".

Polishing off the year 1977 Unknown Soldier presents the usual crop of albums that didn't make the cut for various reasons, plus he's looking at an album by Quartz and a live one by Rainbow. It's all here in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html

Wolverine has another list for us this week, her top five driving albums. She's also got an idea for what could be a fun theme, er, themed section, and needs people to participate. So if you're one of those people who quote "WWWP for Mod 2013", or even if you're not, show her your support at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-tripping.html

Now that the album is done --- I'll listen to it soon, I promise! Just been so busy! --- YorkeDaddy is wondering where the band go from here in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sterpiece.html. Give his album a listen and while you're at it, drop in on his journal to read the fascinating story of its creation.

And so to this week's http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
There's a scene in the Futurama episode (starting soon in my journal, plug plug!) "A big ball of garbage" where, for reasons you won't understand unless you know the show or until you read the entry on it in the Couch Potato, the guys are standing on a massive ball of garbage that is heading on a direct collision course with the Earth. They're there to destroy it but that's not the point. This ball is made up of all New York's trash from the 20th century. When Leela calls it all garbage Fry indignantly says "I can dig in any random pile and come up with something great!" The fact that he ends up almost being strangled by a six-pack's holding ring is beside the point.
http://www.musicbanter.com/avatars/2...ine=1375799211
The thing is, you could say the same about Urban's journal. I literally only had to click it, grab a page at random and this was the first post (that wasn't a response or one-liner) I saw, and I knew it had to be this week's pick. It's short, it's not sweet, but it's damn funny and, more importantly, it's Urban!

Psychic TV - N.Y. Scum

This album consists of two songs both of approx 15 minutes each. Here's a brief description of each song.

N.Y. Scum - For the first 5 minutes some guy rips as much feedback out of his guitar as he can manage while being backed by a bunch of Hare Krishna's on percussion, all the while a drunk couple has a domestic argument. For the next 5 minutes said drunk guy decides to meditate while still shouting for his best mate (Possibly). Then the guitarist returns with a drummer and the two of them alone with the drunk guy attempts some lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-fi Joy Division / White Stripes hybrid garage rock. The final 2 minutes drunk guy attempts to make a techno record.

Haters - What remnants of a song there is here is quickly forgotten about after just a couple of minutes as the song decends into some random shouting & howling feedback.

In a word ... Brilliant.

Boo Boo would shit himself listening to this

Rating 5/5 Soiled Pants

And so, as the sound of schoolbags being packed mingles with the moans of glum children heading back for another term, a slight grin splits old Trollheart's craggy face as he contemplates peace at last. Peace to properly update his journals. Peace to write during the day. Peace to sleep in the afternoon ... what? No, no! That's a scurrilous lie! I never sleep in the afternoons! Not me! Well, maybe on Wednesdays. And Thursdays. Possibly Mondays. Sundays too, well who doesn't? And the odd Saturday. But never Tuesdays. Well, hardly ever...

And now if you'll excuse me, there's a cup of milky tea and a Digestive biscuit with my name on them..
Till next week,
Toodles!

Update for week ending September 1 2013

I'm not going to castigate anyone about not updating their journal this week, as I'm guilty of the same crime myself. But I hope to address this in the coming week. Hope all of you who have neglected your journals will do the same, otherwise we're leaving it all to these guys...

Like Anteater. You never know what you're going to find in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html (sometimes something other than Crimson Glory!) ;), but he's now turning the spotlight on albums other than CG, and this week he's looking at ---- oh no way! I'm NOT trying to spell THAT! Some Japanese group; pay him a visit and see what it's all about.

Condolences to Ki on the passing of his grandmother; read all about how she influenced his music and his life in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html, where he's also managed to write a review of one of his favourite albums, "Key" by Pg.Lost.

Mondo Bungle is finishing up his Top Ten Music Listening Experiences in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...istortion.html

And after being away for some considerable time Plankton is back to feed us from http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...um-bucket.html with more tales of how his career as a young guitarist developed. This time he's remembering the effect Metallica had on him, a lasting one, by all accounts.

As I prepare for Metal Month --- yes I know it's still a month away but there's a lot to listen to and a lot to write --- my own journals are of necessity suffering a little, updatewise. All I can manage this week in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html is a review of District 97's "Hybrid child", while at least I have a lot written for http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html, where as promised there are the first few episodes of "Futurama" as well as the third episode of "House of cards", while as promised last week http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html returns, with a look at an album by Gamma Proxima. Hopefully I'll have a bit more next week.

Lots to get excited about in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html as Unknown Soldier talks about albums from Kiss and Meat Loaf as well as, er, Max Webster? Oh yeah, and Thor. No, not the thunder god. And not the film. Shee! Just follow the link, willya? I'm busy!

As I'm currently listening to, and writing the review of, the new cloudcover album, I've been reading YorkeDaddy's journal which catalogues the creation of same, and I thought some of the entries really stand out, especially in the context of listening to the music. For those who haven't read it yet, or heard the album, this post concerns the first three tracks and how they were created. It's definitely worth your time reading: these guys may be famous soon!

Watch for the review next week in my journal!

Entry 4: Character Development (Tracks 1-3)

Ok, so now you've got the lowdown on where we're coming from, our direction, and the style in which we create our work. Now it's time to dive head-first into the songs themselves! In this entry, the first three songs will observed from conception to recording, with analysis and explanation with respect to the whole album.

As we explained earlier, the first three tracks were as far as the initial planning really went; we needed an attention-getting first track that introduces the protagonist (who is still part of the 'system'), a track in which he becomes aware, and a track that introduces the regime itself. I guess the best place to start is at the first track, so that's where we'll begin!

1. The Fire This Time

Since we knew our biggest literary inspiration would ultimately be '1984,’ we wanted to start off with a tribute to something else. What better for a fiery first track than the cynical 'Fahrenheit 451' for inspiration? The auditory opportunities of depicting the novel's frightening book-burning were too vivid in my mind to pass up. However, the exact nature (or genre) of this depiction was subject to several changes! Prepare yourself for one of the longer song descriptions we'll write!

For a long time I messed around with slap bass licks, trying to find something that would represent the searing swagger of the novel's peace-keeping fire squad. I came up with a couple decent riffs, but it just wasn't feeling right. And, there was the problem that transitioning funky instrumental sections into the indie/alternative verses we would inevitably write might be a disastrous clash of genres! So it was back to the drawing board.

We refused to surrender this song to our niche of dark and pretty indie pop; we wanted to start off with a bang! So I turned to a classic rock/indie mix. The ambitious major chords were powerful enough, I thought, and they offered a better transition to the verses. It was during this period that those verses were actually written: a swooping melody that builds in drama over a chord progression hanging between C major and A harmonic minor. But ultimately the classic intro felt too generic and safe for us. We continued on the search for the appropriate attention-grabbing riff.

The whole time the lyrics were coming along in little chunks, revealing themselves to me in random and spontaneous bursts. They were inspired by, but not derivatives or references to, Bradbury's novel; the perfect balance. The name of the song was also chosen, 'The Fire This Time,' referencing the flames of the novel, as well as an inside joke from my year at Purdue and dealings with a certain organization (but THAT is another story).

The third musical incarnation of the song was the most breathtaking and long-lived. It was a pulsating and driving orchestral attack, created over hours of recording with keyboards and dozens of instrument settings, exact mixing (including panning each instrument to the seating arrangement of an orchestra), and the sound of flames. This neo-classical onslaught was very impressive, but began to bug us as we continued the album. Unfortunately it began to sound more and more absurd when compared to the heartfelt and simple arrangements of some other tracks. In the vein of true artists striving for perfection, we eventually scrapped the style and started again.

Fortunately the fourth version would be the final version. Wanting to keep some of the musical ideas from the orchestral arrangement, we sat down with electric guitars and banged it out. Keeping the same key and notes, but adding syncopation and rhythmic crunch (and a healthy dose of agile synth lead) we created a unique brand of indie pop/rock/dance that hard-presses the listener to avoid bobbing his or her head. We finally knew that we had it, and the slight irritation that the first track did not fit in with the rest disappeared.

2. One Private Moment

As soon as the upbeat and gripping first track ends and the protagonist quits singing about his job with the firemen, something happens. He sees a face, he hears a voice, he suddenly sees things in a new way, for a moment. Something has shaken his rusty heart, and knocked just a little bit of that rust off. As the post-track chaos of air-raid sirens and marching softens into a stately, muted guitar acoustic guitar riff, everything is different.

This track is mostly the work of Bryan; simple acoustic guitar arpeggiation that parallels the simplistic sentiment of the song. The exact tone of the instrument is something perhaps never heard before, as a bizarre combination of factors led up to its sound. It is a muted and thumpy, but very clear tone, and this is a result of the guitar on which it was played. It is the only track on which Bryan's acoustic/electric was used. However, much to my initial irritation, the instrument was strung with years-old strings when we began recording, resulting in a completely dead, floppy sound (the sound that you'll hear on the recording), but with surprising clarity due to the fact that the instrument was plugged in directly.

My contributions include changing the arrangement and adding the first couple of lines to better form the transition from the first track. This track truly feels like the scribblings of a frightened dissenter in a secret diary; it is the same voice as the first track that sings the lines, but with a complete change of emotion.

By the time the track (in typical Bryan fashion) transitions from the interesting verse to the refrain-like coda, the protagonist has made up his mind. He has not decided what action needs to be taken; nothing that major. He's come to a conclusion about something much simpler: he actually feels something, and he refuses to let go of it.

3. Welcome To The Party

So far all we know about the world this album depicts is from the thoughts of the protagonist. It is the job of the third track to be the first time we hear from the other side, the oppressive entity. When brainstorming for this song, we drew a lot of inspiration from ‘1984’ and its infamous ‘party.’ Then the thought hit us: Why not make a double edged song about both the Orwellian regime and a raucous late-night get-together? And on top of that make it in the style of an ominous indie-disco/dance tune? And on top of that, name it ‘Welcome To The Party,’ a painfully ironic dose of wordplay? The prospect of such supreme irony and room for pushing the genre boundary was exciting to us, so we went for it!

As per the character distinction of the album, this song demanded we further experiment and sing it through a creepy vocoder. The result is a song that could easily be very catchy if it didn’t have a strong sense of unease about it. The chirpy syncopated guitar backs the cold voice as it beckons the listener in, leading the ear eventually to a burgeoning synth solo (an instrument that begins to become apparent as a symbol of evil), all backed by a haunting ambient track created by Bryan that only adds to the uneasy feeling of the song.

With an infectious breakdown and some more repetitions of the chorus, our four minute glimpse into the inside of the ‘enemy’ is at its end and the listener gets to hear how the mental state of the protagonist is developing with the next track, a pretty little piece that Bryan will tell you all about in the next entry!

Stay tuned for more; we update twice a week. Also, feel very free to leave your thoughts and feedback and tell us which songs (if any) you most excited about hearing! A mid-August release is probable; we hope some of you are looking forward to it half as much as we are!

So that's it for a rather short update this week, the first entry for September. Can start to feel those chill winter nights drawing --- what do you mean, it's never cold in California? Grrr!

Anyway, let's hope as the nights get longer and darkness comes earlier people will turn back to their journals, and we'll have more to tell you about next week.

Till then
Toodles!

I've been totally lazy over the past three weeks or so. I've got an update coming, I'm just, you know, lazy.

Update for week ending September 8 2013

Well, after last week's slowdown, this week we see an absolute crawl! Other than my own updates there are precisely two journals to tell you about tonight. Two! What are you people up to? What? Work? No, I don't think I ... (checks Wiki) ... ah yes! I remember that! I worked four years ago. What? Life? Life, life, life... no, doesn't ring a bell (checks Wiki again) ... sorry you got me there. Never had one of those!

Seriously, I know everyone is busy and has a lot to do, and of course writing your journal is never top of that ever-increasing list, but two journals updated (other than mine) is pretty disappointing. Hopefully some of you will get inspiration, time or inclination soon and we'll have a better showing next ... hold on a minute! Didn't I say that last week? Oh well, I suppose it makes it a lot easier to write this update. But I'd really rather be spending half an hour composing the post than banging it out in three minutes, as here. Well, we'll see I guess.

So then, in (chortle) alphabetical order as ever, we have

Ki, who's flying the flag in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html with a defence of the oft-maligned Dream Theater (well if they learned to spell it would be a start! Sorry American readers! :shycouch:) and he's also rating his best, worst and meh albums of this year. So far.

And me? Yeah, we're around to me already. Not that I have all that much to say really, but at least I have an excuse. I'm writing Metal Month and it is going to be huge! Twenty-three days and counting! But in the meantime I've tried to keep up a few updates and in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html there's the long-awaited (by him anyway!) review of the band YorkeDaddy is in, cloudcover's new album. Highly recommended. Really. Meanwhile the first episode of "Les Revenants" (the Returned) has begun in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html and I've also managed to mini-review Blue Sky Rider's debut album in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html! Now, don't you feel ashamed you didn't update even once this week? ;)

Always dependable, always http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html, there's a feeling of redux to Unknown Soldier's look at both Queen and Hawkwind, and that's because they're both the second parts of articles already posted. Nice stuff!

Well it goes without saying that I won't be selecting a "Post of the week" as so little has been posted. I understand everyone has their priorities, but it has been a little disheartening to watch the journals page fill with virtually nothing but my name this week. I know Powerstars' computer is broken, and so is Vanilla's, so they're excuses you can't really deny. Not that anyone needs excuses: you update or you don't, and you do it when you like. But I would hope that there might be a little more activity next week, if only for the fact that my journals take up about eighty percent of this post, and I'm not one to get a swollen head, but give a dog a bad name, like Tiddles, all I'm sayin'...

So till next week, let's hope computers get repaired and inspiration strikes, and free time becomes a little kinder to those of you whom it's eluding at the moment.

Toodles!

I tend to update mine at least once a week be it one journal entry or two, and possibly three if i'm feeling creative. I don't want to start getting these things in my journal:

Update for week ending September 15 2013

OK well, ten haven't exactly been killed in the rush, and it's hardly the all hands to the pumps I might have hoped for, but at least we have more than two journals being updated this week. Hey, it's a start! I realise a lot of you are going back to/starting school/college and as winter begins to draw in the prospect of working on your journal may or may not become a more attractive prospect. But here for now are what we have this week:

The old reliable, Anteater, kicks us off with some interesting insights into insurance (I'm serious!) in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html --- don't get taken! Read this first!

Ki is next up with his take on the new album from Bullet for my Valentine (don't think he likes it; see further down) and also comparing two Sigur Ros albums in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html. He's also updating his Hit/Miss/Not sure yet list.

and his paramour is consulting her http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ic-memory.html with songs from Marc Bolan, Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan, among others.

Stephen is still http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-observer.html, and this week he's looking at a band called ... Venom P. Stinger. What does the P stand for? Ask him.

And so to my little corner of Journal Land. What have I been doing you say? Well preparing for Met --- yeah yeah we know! Stop going on about it Trollheart! Yeah well you just wait till you see it. Anyway, again not too much but I'm tryin'! in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html there's a new "More than words", the first in a while, and more to the point, two years after the last "Taking Centre Stage" we're back with an in-depth feature on Dan Fogelberg. Just an episode from "The Onedin Line" over at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html, and that's my lot for this week. I know, I know, but I'm trying to get ... okay okay! I'll shut up about it!

1978 has come to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html, with an intro and no doubt some great music to follow from Unknown Soldier. Just up today I see a review of an Ian Gillan album: never liked the guy myself. Lots more to come no doubt.

And, well, that's it. Oh wait. Since people made an effort this week let me just choose my
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
which comes from Ki, and his brilliant put-down of the album from BfmV. Here it is.

I believe it is time to review an album that just about made me cringe in how terrible it was. Bullet For My Valentine's Temper Temper. I know there's a lot of people out there that will say something like..."were you really expecting something good?". In my defense, I found their three previous albums to be a touch above decent, but this one...this one just makes me wonder what the hell they were trying to accomplish, however that would make one assume that they were actually trying. It seriously lacks in everything that would even allow me to consider it a worthy album worth listening to. The guitarist uses cliche guitar solos and the typical metalcore guitar sounds that one would expect to hear from a band like Bring Me The Horizon, at least they admit to being a part of the genre so it's okay. Lyrically, I don't even want to talk about it but I will only to further my point in how bad I thought this was. For example...taken from the chorus of Dead To The World:

"Lost without hope
Hope is now lost
"

http://themidnightalliance.files.wor...little-bit.gif

Need I say more? Like...really? You're going to start the chorus by just reversing what you said in the first line? Not even that, but the way it's delivered just makes me cringe every time, and of course the rest of the chorus goes as follows:

"As I hang on for one more tomorrow
Hearts turned to black
I'm not coming back
I know I can't last
'Cause I feel like I'm dead to the world
"

This chorus seems like it was taken directly from the mind of some pre pubescent child who is now discovering that he might be emo, and poetry is his way of expressing that interest.

I was really hoping for something at least halfway decent mostly because I found Temper Temper (single) to be pretty damn good. I liked it, and it showed potential for a pretty fun album, but when the album was released, I immediately commented by saying that I was very happy to have gotten the album for free, or else I would have demanded to get my money back. I'd had rather bought a lifetime supply of trash than to support the band for this album. I know that may seem a bit harsh, but if you've listened to this album fully, you'll understand that it's not too unreal to think such things.

There's not much more to say. The only way you should listen to this album, is for free. Don't even bother trying to support the band for it.

Right then, that really is it. Signs of, as they say over here in Ireland about the economy while trying not to laugh, green shoots and some sort of recovery. Whether those shoots put forth buds, or whatever shoots do --- I'm no gardener --- next week is up to you guys. I'll be here to report on whatever is written, so anyone who has an idea for an article banging around in their head, or really must review that album, this would be a good time.

Till then
Toodles!

No I didn't. Your Nazareth update wasn't there when I wrote the update, so that will feature in this week's one. I do work to a deadline, you know... ;)

Trollheart 09-23-2013 04:34 AM

Another week, another small handful of updates only to report. Shall we get on with it then?

Certainly one to keep the flag flying, Ki is looking at the new album from Avenged Sevenfold --- great album! --- and also updating his Hit or Miss list. Catch it all in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nal-music.html

A new journal this week from Maidahl with the oddly-titled http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...949-where.html. Not much in it but then she only began yesterday so we'll keep an eye on it.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-infinity.html is Mondo Bungle, with more fascinating and interesting information on recreational drugs. This time's it's DMT. Huh?

Still tapping away on his 3DS, Powerstars looks in to talk about bad bands covering good songs. It's a brief foray into http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sicalness.html: we look forward to you getting back fully online man!

I've been working relatively hard on my journals, pushing Metal Month aside just for a few days while I try to catch up. Some stuff of course has been pre-written, and the special on Dan Fogelberg has been kicking around my notes for almost a year now, but that doesn't make it any less enthralling. I hope. Finished it off this week, so if you're a fan or want to read about Dan's music head to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html. Oh, and eight days left people! ;) However I have completely written the new writeups for Babylon 5 season two in the last few days, and am continuing to do so. Catch the return of the greatest Science-Fiction drama series ever (Star what?) on http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html, while yeah, I've managed to squeeze something into http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html too, with a review of Caves of Glass. Finally, after much badgering, I've listened to "Nevermind", but as expected don't consider it one of the http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ver-heard.html.

And that, folks, is how you do it! Of course, you need not to have a job, a life and be totally obssessed by wanting people to read what you write, but you know, some of us are sad that way! Next week Metal Month starts, so it's possible that my other journals may get somewhat neglected as I devote all my energies to that. Then again, most of it is now written so perhaps not. I'll try to keep up with certainly The Couch Potato at least, but we'll see.

Which leaves of course my old friend Unknown Soldier, who has now moved into 1978 in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html and is reviewing albums by Nazareth (that one missed the deadline cutoff last week), Scorpions and AC/DC. Good stuff!

So the slowdown continues, but some of us are still hard at it. I'll keep reporting if you keep writing, deal?

I said, deal???
Till next week,
Toodles!
