What has Tim Burton made of any note in the last few years? And we were talking about The Nightmare Before Christmas, which came out the same time as those Disney movies I listed.
|
What is wrong with you? I made it very clear I know that he only made the one decent animated movie, but that it owns any Disney effort. I never made any implication that he had written or directed a slew of great animated movies, which he did not.
And Frownland, it started on Frozen, as posted by you. There's nothing wrong with TLK and B&TB per se, but Batty's assertion that Disney were then superior is what I have a problem with. They're not original and they follow basically the same formula every movie. Not that I care, it's just Batty's devotion to Disney needed to be challenged. And it was. Whether you agree or not is beside the point; the world does not begin and end with Disney. Of course Burton may have just been lucky/hit the sweet spot with Nightmare, because as I already pointed out, Corpse Bride was a huge letdown and he hasn't attempted any more animated movies, so that must say something. But I'd still take Nightmare over any Disney movie, including The Lion King, other than the really old ones like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, when Disney were in their heyday and not everyone spoke in American idioms. Oh, and **** Mickey Mouse. I hate that bastard. |
I initially talked about Frozen and called it mediocre. Then we started talking about Disneys greats once you started bashing them. I'm not sure why you're trying to argue the order of events when they're documented right here in this thread.
The type of person who thinks that all Disney films are of the same formula has probably only seen two of the princess films. I also find it hysterical how you say that they stick to the same formula and started touting Burton. Do you see the irony in that? Why the double standard? You also noted that you'd take Sleeping Beauty and Snow White over Nightmare, but aren't those basically the same films as The Lion King? (That last sentence was a joke. You're welcome for pointing that out). So I must ask, what's wrong with you? |
Fun fact: Burton didn't direct 'Nightmare Before Christmas'.
(Just mentioning it, no bearing on the discussion at hand.) |
Dude, I love cheesy romantic comedies, and this was awesome.
http://www.chroniquedisney.fr/imgAni...unefois-08.jpg |
Is TH still maintaining this? I was looking forward to having my name mentioned for the first time in forever this week.
If not, I totally get it--it's a massive undertaking. |
Burton has done more than two animated movies. Frankenweenie sucked, but it counts.
Also, he didn't direct Nightmare Before Christmas. He just took credit for it. He's made some really good movies, but he's made a lot of derivative schlock as well. |
Tim Burton is alright, i honestly don't get why ppl love Nightmare before christmas so much cause aside from the characters design i don't see what's so special about that movie but i do love Pee wee's big adventure and Edward scissor hands.
Disney on the other made such amazing animated movies that it made japan go "HOLY SH*T" cause in a way, it was Disney that first legitimized animation as a respected source for good storytelling. They made movies that parents could enjoy AND could be proud to show to their kids despite the movies being racist and hiding subliminal messages in them. That's all kind of badass imo, that's selling you magic in a bottle while giving you the middle finger. :finger: How Walt Disney Influenced Anime | The Movie Blog i know this doesn't prove Disney films are better than Tim Burton's but i think it proves how historically significant they were. |

How come you haven't been doing updates for a while?
|
Too busy with other stuff. Keep meaning to get back to it, but haven't managed it so far. Might be the new year before I get my **** together.
|
For many years --- well, months, I walked on paths about which I will not speak. But now, finally, after all this time, I have returned!
I'll be honest: I seriously thought this post would be one advising you all that I could no longer do this update, that it would have to be left aside. But then I thought about it some more and decided just to get it done. And so I have. So expect the first update of 2016 on Sunday, though as you can imagine, there's a huge backlog for me to get through, so I hope you'll all bear with me while I take the time to catch up. |
On sunday? perfect. It will be like reading the sunday paper.

Hmm. Everything appears to be where I left it. Good. You'd think they'd have stolen my desk, but no. Excellent. Well, then! Time to roll up my sleeves and get back to work. ARRRGGHHH!!!! http://i.imgur.com/ea7Akqn.gif Stay tuned... |
Okay, now I believe DJ has kindly picked up the baton and run with it, for which I thank him and request his retirement in the traditional way
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1kfBc1cxds.../s1600/bg3.gif Thanks man! And now that that's out of the way... I'm back baby! https://media.giphy.com/media/7xkxbhryQO7hm/giphy.gif My sincere thanks to DJ, seriously, for trying to keep this going but I know he has commitments and has realised just what a large undertaking this can be, so he has graciously agreed to handover to me from Dec 1. (I can be very persuasive!) https://media.giphy.com/media/4ReBsMzFlnJkY/giphy.gif So it's just time to indulge in some serious and lengthy research https://i2.wp.com/media1.giphy.com/m...KrC0/giphy.gif before I can take this up again. See you in a week! Until then ... so many journals to read up on ... http://media3.giphy.com/media/pipQ4NODyeiZy/giphy.gif |
Our glorious overlord has returned!

I'm basically the chicken and I didn't go down without a fight. I did agree to pass it back to TH after my defeat.

I'm back, bitches! Looks like I'm the one coming back from the dead this time! Oh, the irony! My apologies for the long absence, but I'm glad to see that DJ was able to keep things ticking over while I was away. My thanks to him. I'm also glad to see that most of you kept up your journals, and in some cases created new ones. It's never easy – believe me, I know! - pushing yourself to keep writing, thinking that nobody is reading and wondering why you bother. I know that this thread has helped some people retain the incentive to keep posting, while of course there are those who do it anyway and don't care, but I'm told it has been a help to some of you, and also gives an idea of what other people are doing. So don't worry https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/i...9pknoztQqs_YCA and we have a lot to get through. I've agreed with DJ to cover back to the beginning of November, as his pc is in the shop, or was, and he hasn't had the time to post his entries for the last month. Eventually the two threads will be merged into this and we'll continue on from there, but for now we're going to check out any entries that were made since November 1 and try to bring this thing up to date. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...dbe01283cb.gif Right you are, Big Guy! Keep yer beard on! Hey! Look at that! Even the Big Man comes to this thread! Must make me really cool! http://www.trollheart.com/ohdear1.png Ah, who needs Him? I got you guys, right? Right? Guys! Guys? http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/...b5wcv9cjpg.jpg Ah, who needs you guys? I'm gonna go build my own thread, with blackjack and hookers! In fact, forget about the thread! ****! The thread! https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...56pgbzzsuNXC86 Now where was I? Oh yes! The update! Notes for those who are not familiar with my way of doing things in this thread: Spoiler for read here:
Cleverly assuring himself of top billing every week, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-whatever.html and what he's doing in November is listening to MC Trustan (or is that Tristan? And is that our own Tristan Geoff?Enquiring and lazy minds want to know!) as well as Sunny Day Real Estate, Meineral, Cursive and then talking about his own new album. Proud winners of the award for Band With Longest Name, The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die get a shot too, as does Title Fight, American Football, Hoteliers, Truckfighters and a whole lot more, mostly it would seem, emo? Oh, and the dreaded TMR gets an airing too. What did he think of it? Well, if I told you that you'd have no reason to check out his journal, now would you? That's it, off that way. Scoot! I've only just begun this update and daylight is already failing! Where's my tallow? Who took my quill? No, the good one! Oh, before we leave him, the blank-minded one (see what I did there?) is also http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...out-music.html where he's listeniing to, and, one would presume, working out to, Death Grips and Suicide Silence. Indeed. Black Francis returns with more http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ms-nes-ps.html in which he's extolling the virtues of Super Metroid while in his own inimitable way http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...kles-bull.html and tells us what he thinks about the Aspartame scare (get that stuff AWAY from me!) :yikes: Goofle wants to remind us http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...obably-dl.html with the likes of Bad by Michael Jackson and an oldie from the Ronettes. One journal you can be guaranteed to find chock-full of content is http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nnerspace.html, and some of the topics covered by our favourite music guru this month include “Groove without a doubt”, “Falling down” and the continuing adventures of “The Metadata Project”, as well as the usual highbrow discussion and debate we've come to expect from him, to say nothing of all the cool new albums he shamelessly flaunts at we paupers! ;) Going for some time now, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...is-arcade.html is still with us, and Ki is giving out his awards for best video games, worth checking out, as is his new journal http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...usic-hall.html, where he's just completed his Steven Wilson special, and is now enthusing about his AOTY, and his latest obsession,The Weeknd's Starboy. Who would bet against an avatar change soon? ;) Speaking of AOTY, there's a different list in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...puc-scale.html. http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-my-life.html says Mondo, and why not, whatever the hell Loren is! Some of those albums include Voivod's Nothingface. More AOTY material when you jump onboard mordor's dragon longship and he takes you http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...c-odyssey.html. Ray LaMontagne, Sam Beam and Jesca (?) Hoop, Shugo Tokomaru, Sturgill Simpson, Bat For Lashes, Nick Cave and Bowie just a few in his list so far. http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ramblings.html seems to be doing a sort of rec thread in journal form, which is a cool idea. So far he's got through Acme, Colleen Green and Andrew Redfearn, who I believe used to be some form of hovercraft, and whose album I seem to recall reviewing in my “Love or Hate?” original thread. Speaking of me, I'm back obviously with my own journals, and new ones! http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html has been overtaken by The Great Discography Project, which has finally moved on to take in Anathema, Fugazi Bathory and Robbie Williams, and will be, if I can manage it, updated about every second day. Charting the history of prog rock, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ive-metal.html has reached 1969 as we review albums by Yes, The Moody Blues and Frank Zappa, as well as the dreaded TMR, while http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...heme-park.html has now moved away from Autumn as a theme, and has embraced Wolves (not literally of course), Silence and Storms. Two new journals surface this week (well this is me we're talking about after all!) with http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...k-journal.html giving me a place to talk about my favourite music in other than a historical manner, kicking off with Marillion's debut album, while http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...l-journal.html lets me get a bit heavier, and we open with a review of the debut album from Trees of Eternity, and a story of a real-life tragedy. Okay well that's it for this week, and the first Trollheart-helmed update, which ironically is coming at close to the end of the year! Oh well. Back next week. Until then, if you'll excuse me, my desk is rather full... http://channelmavenconsulting.com/wp...toon-small.jpg Till next week, Toodles! |
So glad you're back TH. No one but you could do this. :)
*googling extolling* Oh it means praising. |
I missed this so much :( glad it's back!

And let's not give DJ too much credit. He did it for a week.
