The Music Banter Members Journals Weekly Update Thread, week-ending July 12 2015

Time for another update, and since I can't think of anything clcver to introduce this one, nor come up with any theme, what say we just get on with and then then we can all get back to our lives? Deal?

Anteater gets us going, but not onboard his Yacht Rock, um, yacht, this time. No, at last someone has done it, and if it was going to be anyone it would be him, with help from Toto-journal-partner Unknown Soldier. http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...r-journal.html needs no explanation, and kicks off with “The best of 75-77” with this week Starcastle's Fountains of light.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...continuum.html continues with Zeds Dead (didn't even know he was alive!)

while contractual obligations between he and Pet_Sounds mean that http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...lks-about.html this week listening to ... Billy Joel. But, not Billy Joel. Um, you ever heard of Atilla? No, not the Hun! The band! No? Me neither. But Batty reviews it here in exchange for Pet_Sounds promising to review an album for Manowar week which he has yet to do!

and Exo decides to review his best albums of 2015 so far in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...s-musings.html : sure what better place to do that? Included are Mount Eerie, Creepoid, Courtney Barnett, Earl Sweatshirt and more.

While http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...63-2015-a.html reaches 2011, where we hear from Poor Lily, Death Grips, Kendrick Lamar and Danny Brown, among others.

More of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...es-patrol.html, with a visit from the Secretary of Defence! No, really! And whatever you do, do not call Fiddler “Drill Sergeant!”

So what's happening in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nnerspace.html this week? Well, a dissertation on piracy for one thing. Also more James Joyce and “Great Music no-one is looking for”. Check it out!

Down in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...is-arcade.html he's finally finished Outlast, and is about to take on Nuclear Throne! That's him gone for another few weeks then...

Read all about Mondo's travels on the way to Reno in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...im-leavin.html as his odyssey gets going

and don't forget to read the latest chapter in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...rgy-story.html while you're at it; up to chapter seventeen now, which is so big it's in two parts.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...listening.html sees our favourite guitar god and newest mod deploring the state of the music industry in terms of bands being hung out to dry by record labels and producers, with some personal experience to go with that.

Finally back in some sort of action, I have the third Marillion album, Misplaced Childhood, reviewed as part of the Marillion discography in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html, while perhaps appropriately, given my change of avatar today, there's more Futurama in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html, with the story of Hercules playing out in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...gy-legend.html. A few reviews in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html with Sleep Thieves, The Lord Weird Slough Feg and Prefab Sprout.

Unknown Soldier is as ever http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html as he heads nearer to the top ten for 1985 with Agent Steel and Lizzy Borden.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...tasy-epic.html seems to have descended into some sort of drug-fuelled madness, but I'm sure it will all work out in the end.

To be fair, there are quite a few, again, this week, posts that could have been chosen for my
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
I considered efforts from Fiddler, Anteater, Innerspaceboy and Plankton, but in the end I had to go for this, if for no other reason than hopefully it encourages Mondo to keep writing and keep us updated on his travels.

June 28 - July 8

Pretty much more general chillin. Drank my weight in hard cider most of the time up until the fourth. I hung out with some other friends and stayed there during this time, different from the pals I met up with first. Two of them, a couple, were having a lot of problems at the time, dealing with finding new places to live as well as some serious quarreling between the two. I witnessed completely unrestrained emotional outbreaks from both of them. They would be moving, each to a different place nearby, both in California. Even more squabbling ensued from others, all brought about by similar means. Moving out, moving in. The couple left on Monday morning.

Friends and family came together for the Fourth of July. Drank a semi-heavy amount and enjoyed some fantastic dinner. Some music that usually tickles my emotions came on, made me think about what I was doing here, and in general. I can never seem to know. I left the area we were hanging out to be alone for a minute, and began crying, just a tad. That passed soon enough.

No one seems to be functioning right right now. Everyone is fighting with everyone else. A very conflict filled week. I stayed at another friends house these last two nights, and he and his roommate had more loud arguments, to be followed by more screaming and crying. Still, it all passes. I think I'm leaving soon, well, tomorrow most definitely, but had also considered going later today. It's Four o'clock and heavy rain though. I'd already told the people I was with today I'd be leaving on the bus and they dropped me off there. It's not too interesting to hear about me hanging out, but I guarantee the real experience will start within twent-four hours.

Now I'd like to try something a little different, something I'm going to call
http://www.keypoulanmusic.com/system...ning-thumb.jpg
I know I had “Classic Journals I have read” before, but this is going to concentrate on the VERY FIRST post in a journal, and then trace its evolution (or devolution) to see if the journal lived up to the promise of its first post, deviated wildly from it, faded away a short time (or a long time) later, or went on to become the journal the author had hoped and intended it to be when he or she wrote the opening post.

I'm including every single journal ever started here, right back as far as I can go, and am using a random number generator to decide who gets featured, so it could be yours, or it could be a journal that only started a few weeks ago, or indeed a journal that has been going for years. It could even be a journal by someone who has left us, or started new journals. It could be a journal long given up by its author and left to moulder in the lower pages, forgotten and unloved. We'll see.

If your idea didn't work out, and you're still around and reading this, don't take offence. I know how hard it is to make a journal work --- we all do --- and it's nothing more than gentle fun if yours didn't fulfil the promise you had hoped it would, with perhaps even a gentle nudge to, you know, maybe take another shot at it?

So, who's first on the examination table then?

Well: there are sixteen pages of journal entries, with twenty per page (leaving out the stickies at the top) so that makes ... um .. um .. times ten, carry the five, add three .... six thousand four hundred journals! Oh, wait, no that's not right. Perhaps I need to call in a scientist to help me.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...px-Prfrink.jpg
Okay so that's 320 journals. So into my Random Number Generator go 1 to 320, hit the button and we get...
62.
That means it's none of the current journals, though not too far back. Let's see, three pages and we find...
http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ouse-v-ii.html

Well, this is interesting! I know this journal was going for some time before Bulldog left us, came back, left us and is, I think, still here? So what was the opening post? On August 1 2010 Bulldog wrote

1) I thought the last one had gone a bit stale, so I figured a fresh start was on the cards.
2) I fancied doing a much more organised, album-centric one, which wouldn't really have fitted in the old thread.
3) I wanted to start another epic album thread without the confines of a particular discography or genre.
4) I was bored.

Also, for added zaniness, I'm gonna go allmusic on everyone and use a pretty star system to rate things like below;

http://i28.tinypic.com/xpd53n.gif

^ Put simply, anything I put 3 1/2+ stars after gets my official stamp of recommendation, while any other ratings just equate to some random musing or other. In other words, some of these albums may be amazing, some not so great, some you might despise. Either way, I'm gonna update this twice a week. I don't mind helping anyone particularly interested out with finding links either.

So then, read or don't...

As I don't know his journal that well, I'm going to hold off judgement, as it were, till next week and spend the coming week browsing through his entries. I'll give you my conclusions next week. Bet ye can hardly wait, eh? ;)

And so we come to the end of another update. If you want more of the same, you know what to do and where to be!
Till then,
Toodles!

If you get one of my journals, please roll again. They've all (both?) been abortive and bad and I don't need to be reminded of that again.

So noted. Anyone else who for whatever reason would prefer me not to feature their journal let me know, and if it comes up i will then indeed roll again.

The Music Banter Members Journals Update Thread: Week ending July 19 2015

http://p2evolunteer.com/wp-content/u...lcome-Back.jpg
Seems everyone has chosen this week to return to writing in their journals! We have no less than three members coming back into the fold, and we welcome them all. Read more below.

A double from the insectivore to get us underway this week, as Anteater continues http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...r-journal.html along with his partner in crime Unknown Soldier, and this week they're looking at Kansas and Styx. Speaking of Styx, very bad continuity joke but, you know, the ancient Greek river of the dead? No? Well, anyway, Ant is sailing this particular ship solo as he embarks on another leg of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ravaganza.html, which this week has taken him to the Virgin Islands, and as a consequence he's sharing music by Player, Chicago, Marc Jordan and Bobby Caldwell.

The Review Randomizer has become just the Randomizer, for those who wish to know, and down in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...continuum.html Aux-in is listening to Pierce Fulton, Ziggy, Andy Moor and Gareth Emery, who I think may be a favourite of the lovely Vanilla. Not quite sure about that. Must admit, I listened to the Andy Moor track and it was not at all bad. Too busy to hear the whole thing but what I heard I didn't hate.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ic-banter.html speaks for itself really. In the wake of Manowar week, deciding we had not had enough True Metal, The Batlord decided to catalogue their entire discography. For hardened metal heads and fans of cheesy metal only! Albums like Into Glory Ride, Battle Hymns and Hail to England all get the Batty treatment, as well as some singles and EPs and all his reviews from the aforementioned Manowar week. With more to come. You have been warned!

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-journal.html is back, but not with part two of Drones by Muse, not yet. This week he's doing album spotlights, with Thom Yorke, The Oh Sees and Philip Selway.

There's a whole lot going on down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...is-arcade.html, with his review of Bioshock Infinite, Trove, screenshots galore (well, three) as well as a tribute to the late CEO of Nintendo, and probably a lot more too. Check it out!

Not only that, but LiL is back from whatever strange alternate dimension she's been exploring for the last while, and finishing off her review of Sparks's Kimono my house in the return of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...de-sparks.html.

Gonna have to make the time to read http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...im-leavin.html as it looks to be really interesting. But I'm way busy at the moment. You don't have that excuse (as nobody is busy except me) so head on down and read all about his travels. Hey, maybe he'll even write you a poem!

After three months away Plankton is back to sling some more out of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...um-bucket.html, with more of his life story soundtracked by Stevie Ray, Public Enemy and Snap?

Things are finally moving on the Marillion discography down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html as we finish off the Fish era with Clutching at Straws and move into the Steve Hogarth years with Holidays in Eden, Afraid of Sunlight and This Strange Engine. There's a return of two of my older journals, as one of the http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ver-heard.html turns out to be Catherine Wheel's Chrome, and then the long-not-at-all-missed http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...m-reviews.html takes a butcher's at The Ladybug Transistor. Yeah.

Oh and http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html has Alestorm and No-Man, and we begin yet another discography, this time of Steve Earle. My album reviews now include ratings, “Love or Hate?” style.

Fate's Warning and Manilla Road are two of the albums featured for 1985 in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html

and finally, Violet is back to give us the review Chasoco has yet to complete (;)), yes it's Drones again, this time in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-endeavor.html.

I think we all know what the
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
is going to be this week. Suck it, as he'd say, losers!

****in' A, dude, all the Manowar reviewing I've been doing has given me the urge to do their entire discography -- and I don't just mean their studio albums, but live albums and videos/DVDs, singles, demos, compilations, bootlegs, and anything else I haven't thought of. My eventual goal is to review every single release Manowar has ever put out or been on (official or otherwise). This is a glorious undertaking, which a True Metalhead of the Highest Caliber such as myself is not only solely qualified for, but obligated to perform (like Muslims visiting Mecca).

This will be a long-term venture, hence why I will not be doing this in the Manowar Week thread, which is almost over anyway -- though to a True Metalhead, every week is Manowar Week. I'll repost the reviews I've already done, and keep a list of links in the OP. I might even decide to rereview certain albums if I decide that I've sufficiently changed my mind on a release that it merits a new look, though the original review will not be replaced.

So, welcome to the co-best thread on Music Banter (the other being of course The Batcave). All glory to Manowar, and let's get this **** underway.

Spoiler for Manowar's Discography:
This is the current list I've compiled of Manowar's entire discography, with releases I've already reviewed in bold. It's probably complete as far as official releases go, but I'm sure there are bootlegs out there still to be found. Oh my ****ing god, there are so many ****ing bootlegs, and they probably all sound like ****. **** you pirating *******s.

The Music Banter Members Journals Update Thread: Week ending July 26 2015

Note: Before we get going for this week, Aux-in has requested I no longer cover his journal, so it won't be in the update thread from today onwards. You know where to find him if you want to read his stuff.

And now, another announcement.
http://img15.deviantart.net/3fbd/i/2...un-d59sfqa.jpg
After our disastrous collaboration on the “Voyager “ journal some time back, Batty and I are at it again. Never know when to quit, eh? Taking a page (well, a whole bloody chapter really!) out of the book of Unknown Soldier and Anteater with their joint Toto journal, we're launching into the dark and murky world of Batman. Sort of. Read below for more.

Getting things underway this week is Anteater, with his entry on Eddie Money in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...r-journal.html

then that collaboration I spoke of above kicks off as http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ed-series.html and we start off with the two-parter Robin's Reckoning, with more to come soon.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ms-nes-ps.html has Uniracers and Weaponlord under the microscope, and Black Francis is also reviewing the debut self-titled album from Suburban Lawns in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...l-journey.html

and we have another new journal, this time http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...g-journal.html does exactly what it says on the tin, charting his progress through his filmmaking adventures. His first short, Final breath is up now. Check it out: this guy's got talent!

Movies about Waits? I'm there! Read all about it in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nnerspace.html

and then pop down to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...is-arcade.html, where he's pitting Terraria against Minecraft and also running through his plays of The Binding of Isaac.

There are first impressions of Wilco's new album in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...o-reviews.html

The Marillion discography has slowed down a little as I get diverted by other projects ((who else but Trollheart, right?) but there are two more this week in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html as we check out Radiation and Marillion.com. Finishing off the scores in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...m-reviews.html, if anyone's interested, and more Strontium Dog in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-2000-ad.html.

The hilariously named Heavy Pettin' are number twelve in Unknown Soldier's countdown for 1985 in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html, while WASP take the eleventh spot, leaving the way clear for the top ten to begin next week.

I missed this out last week because I frankly hadn't had the time to read through Bulldog's journal, and to be honest I still haven't, but I do what I always do: I skim. And in taking a quick look through his journal over the course of, so far, nine pages, I'd have to say that it looks like he stuck at what he had intended to do and mostly achieved it. Like most of us, he did seem to lose interest or lack the time necessary to write full entries from time to time (quite often, in fact) but when he did write then his reviews certainly made up for the delay since the previous one. His journal is definitely worth checking out, though you will have to forage for it as it's somewhere on the fifth or sixth page (or you can just click here http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ouse-v-ii.html of course)

So as far as his mission statement, as it were, is concerned, it's a pretty clear case of

That's all we have time for this week, so until next Sunday,

The Music Banter Members Journals Weekly Update Thread, week-ending August 2 2015

A new month, and a new update thread. There's certainly been some interesting stuff happening, but the big news of course is the advent of
http://www.trollheart.com/metalmonth3sml.png
Yes, I know there are still two months to go, but you'd be surprised how fast they will go in, and today is the first day I sit down and really start researching, studying for and writing the third annual month given over entirely to Heavy Metal in my main journal. I'm hoping to make this the best yet, so if anyone wants to get involved, whether by writing something, making a suggestion or even joining in the fun via your journal, drop me a PM. Oh, and no poseurs please. Except me.

Well, after that shameless self-promotion, time to get on with this week's update.

Oh yeah, there are some new journals started this week. Read on...

Although http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...r-journal.html is another joint venture (no I don't know what they smoke; ask them!) between Anteater and Unknown Soldier, I hope the latter will understand if I continue to feature it under his partner's name. It's easier than changing each time one or the other posts, it's started under Anteater's name and more importantly, it means that unless Aaron A. Ardvaark starts a journal, this one should always be first, assuming it's updated that week. So I'm not calling it Anteater's journal alone, but I am featuring it under his name.

And after that rather long-winded explanation of my motives, it is in fact Unknown Soldier who writes this week, with an article on Angel's self-titled debut.

Another of our talented members, Antonio has one of his own songs, a new one, in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ng-ground.html, so check it out

then get your crimefighting kick as http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ed-series.html. Finishing off with the second part of “Robin's Reckoning” and we'll be moving swiftly on to a Joker episode real soon, so stay tuned, Batfans!

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...es-patrol.html have been on something of a hiatus recently, but he tells us that's because he's been involved in helping to restructure the US Army! Good excuse, man, good excuse!

Coming near its end now, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...63-2015-a.html is up to 2012, where we find him listening to the likes of Swans, Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat, Aesop Rock and Death Grips.

Innerspaceboy is getting to grips with metamorphosing from a reclusive oracle into a taxpaying, productive member of society, even going so far as to buy a house! The things marriage does to ya, huh? Read all about it in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nnerspace.html

Team Fortress 2 is Ki's current addiction down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...is-arcade.html --- try getting him away from that one!

New journal this week from Occulthawk, his first effort I believe, as he opens the doors of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...cking-out.html and starts off with Daniel Menche, John Wiese and Hal Hutchinson.

Going a slight little bit off the beaten path, Oriphiel presents the second and third parts of “Sam”, his side story to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...rgy-story.html

A little way behind Goofle is http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ar-1965-a.html, where he's just hitting 2006, with albums from The Knife, Melvins, Band of Horses and The Mars Volta among others.

Without question, the most momentous and surely most impossible task undertaken by any MB member --- more than Urban's reviews of every “NOW” album ever, more than my history of progressive rock, more even than Unknown Soldier's seminal “Pounding Decibels”, TechnicLePanther presents http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ory-music.html. The best of luck to him. This is going to have a lot of people interested. And as if that weren't enough, he also has http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-pop-flop.html, where you can vote on how good or crappy the song he posts is.

As for me, well we're getting close to finishing the Marillion discography in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html, with Arachnophobia. Expect it all to wrap up about midweek. Meanwhile, down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html we've got a new series in “The Simpsons at the Movies” as well as the fifth in the Star Trek movie franchise, The Final Frontier, as the USS Nerdtopia continues its maiden voyage.

(Note: I'll do my best to keep my journals up to date, but over the next few months I'm going to be immersed in Metal in readiness for the Big Event, so I can't promise they'll always up updated. I'll certainly do what I can to make sure they're not neglected though.)

Stalwart of the journal section, Unknown Soldier's http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html hits the top ten for 1985, kicking off with Warrant at number ten.

Oh, get down off that chair and take the noose from around your neck son! We've all been there, but your troubles are over, as YorkeDaddy is back on the case and the latest instalment of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...tasy-epic.html takes us back in time four years to the heyday of a certain mod who is no longer with us. If you're not reading the greatest journal ever created in the history of Music Banter, then you had better be dead. Or in jail. And if you're in jail, BRRRRREAK OUUUUTTTTT!
(Disclaimer: Trollheart does not condone, endorse or encourage the forced exit of legally incarcerated felons from their prisons. The late Phil Lynott, on the other hand, did...)

For sheer audacity (no, not the music program!) and ambition, this week's
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
has to go to TechnicLePanther, who begins his journal this week thus:

Music. Probably what you're reading this about. Wikipedia defines it as "an art form whose medium is sound and silence". I believe this is the most accurate description of music. After all, music is extremely diverse, and at its extremes, music is pretty much just sound and silence. However, music also incorporates simple concepts such as harmony, melody, and rhythm. Usually, music is broken up into segments. Songs, compositions, albums, and the like are all ways of separating one piece of music from another.

Music goes back and forth a lot. A song from 2012 may end up sound like one from 1942. A song from 1167 may sound peculiarly like a song from 2015. The composer may not intend to be "remaking" someone else's work, but instead it is a strange coincidence. However, there are also some times when one person actually remakes another's work. This is usually called a "cover". The goal of this handy-dandy guide to the history of music is to stay away from jumping around as much as possible. As I move through this guide, I will also attempt to move through time, starting with the earliest music, and ending today.

I will also be operating under the assumption that anything that anyone calls music, is music, because I have no time to deliberate what is and isn't. Of course, some things will certainly be covered more thoroughly than others, but I will attempt to match the significance of a particular person, genre, or era to the amount of time spent covering it.

Now that the ground rules have been laid, I believe it's safe for me to begin my tale.

Expect the next part within the week.

Okay, so now it's time for another look at a journal's opening post, the one made
http://www.keypoulanmusic.com/system...ning-thumb.jpg
My Random Generator sparkles, hisses and squeals at me (well, no it doesn't, but it's so much more dramatic, no? No? Have it your way then!) and delivers into my trembling hands the number
116
I check along the pages of the journals section and see that on page 6, sixteen lines down is this gem, from http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...epe-kalle.html
We all know Franco. Some of us love him, some of us hate him, but one thing I think nobody expected was that he would take his eyes off booty and stop listening to Pepe Kalle long enough to actually start a journal. But he did, and back in April of 2014, the 11th to be precise, his journal opened with these immortal words:

I hope I can share them soon.

Did he live up to that promise? Well, I'll tell you next week.
Spoiler for In case you can't wait...:
He didn't of course.

So that's it for this update. In a week that has seen the inception of one of the biggest and most ambitious projects ever attempted by an MB member, as well as the return of YorkeDaddy and Fiddler, it's been a busy one. Don't forget to let me know if you want to help out with Metal Month III.

Till next week,

Ugh, now I have expectations. Thanks a lot, Trolly. :banghead:

Actually, it's a lot of fun writing it so far. Thankfully, the beginning of music history isn't impossibly complicated.

The Music Banter Members Journals Weekly Update Thread, week-ending August 9 2015

It's a case of 1001 Albums overload this week, as one journal gets the boot, replaced by another and even another new one starts up. We also welcome back an old friend we haven't seen for, oh, yonks! It's all below, so let's get cracking.

And we start off with two Batlords for the price of one (is that a bargain or a threat?) to get us underway this week. Well, sort of. He opens with another chance to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-oblivion.html as he explores Afterlife with Archie, then he and I team up again as http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ed-series.html, where we lavish praise on “Joker's Favor”, the latest in our list of episodes watched and discussed.

The first of those 1001 albums journals comes from our man bob, who presents http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...s-edition.html. Now, a journal from bob is of course always a reason to get excited and anticipate greatness (which so far has never disappointed) but this is something special, so check it out as he lets you into a little corner or his world. So far, Dangermouse and Sparklehorse, Lana del Rey and Dwarves. Surely only a taster. I have a feeling the views on this one are going to go up, up, up real soon!

Deadchannel is asking “Where did the Dead Tapes go?” If you want to find out what he's on about, check out http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...g-journal.html

What's happening in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nnerspace.html this week? As usual, you know it's going to be an interesting read. So settle back and let articles like “Journey inward to jazz”, “Electronic meditation” and “A bit of rope for the web” wash over you. And then thank Innerspaceboy by commenting in his journal. It's the least you can do, now isn't it?

It's been a long, long, long time since we got another episode in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sible-man.html --- almost exactly a year, in fact --- so pull up a chair and lose yourself in Janszoon's incredible prose. Even if the music --- Jimmy Radway and the Fe Me Time All Stars --- doesn't grab you, I'm willing to bet his writing will. Should be a contender for Journal of the Year, if only he updated more frequently, as it seems to get forgotten about.

Lots going on too down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...is-arcade.html, where he's rediscovering Wolfenstein (kind of), with more Isaac and a rant about weapons in Team Fortress 2.

More http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...cking-out.html from Occulthawk with Carle Santos

while we're up to the final chapters in Sam's side story as Oriphiel then returns to the main http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...rgy-story.html, now hitting chapter eighteen!

How better to get motivated to write new music than to listen to the gems you already created? http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...listening.html is the place to be!

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ory-music.html begins in earnest as TechnicLePanther asks that question that Man has asked since he first heard sounds: what is music, and where did it start? Also with added animals.

Later than expected (Metal Month III is starting to take over my life, such as it is!) we finish up the Marillion discography in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html with Marbles. No, it's not their last album, but all the ones following it have been reviewed by me previously. Then there's another 1001 albums link. The original journal I attempted, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...e-you-die.html has been retired, as frankly I'm just not interested enough in the generally low-grade and boring albums that are coming out of this list. So instead, I'm kicking off a new journal, which may or may not feature collaboration from Batty --- I'm still waiting for his response at this time --- http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...e-you-die.html. This covers the list started by me some time ago in the Rock and Metal subforum, and which has been added to by other members and now stands at around 110. It's only opening this week, so the first album hasn't even been reviewed, but that will happen by this time next week.

And into the top ten with Exciter at number nine as http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html hurtles through 1985.

http://www.trollheart.com/backfrom.png
As mentioned, we haven't seen Janszoon around here for about a year, at least not writing in his journal, so it's great to see him return to continue the story of the gentleman who is hard, nay impossible to see, and we hope it will herald more regular updates. Welcome back, Jansz!
http://www.keypoulanmusic.com/system...ning-thumb.jpg
I doubt anyone will be really surprised --- even if you didn't read the spoiler last week --- when I say that probably with the best of intentions, Franco's journal petered out after a mere five months comprising fifteen entries. His last effort was in September of 2014, since when nothing has been heard of him. So although his heart was surely in the right place, I assume booty took more of his attention and he let his journal slide, where it now languishes in the depths of page six, heading for page seven. Sorry Franco my man but it's a case of
https://misslillysblog.files.wordpre...3ac-images.jpg

And that's it for this week. Back with more next Sunday, when we'll do it all over again!
Till then,

The Music Banter Members Journals Weekly Update Thread, week-ending August 16 2015

First off, apologies to two members: I missed out updates for both YorkeDaddy's and Anteater/Unknown Soldier's journals so my humblest apologies. I forget things so easily, you know...
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CIobnevUYAA8-a6.jpg
Yes, I completely missed US's review of Foreigner's first album in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...r-journal.html last week, so apologies for that --- blame it on my advancing dementia --- while this week his partner in journalism, Anteater, adds his contribution with an article on Ambrosia's self-titled debut.

Black Francis is having Azure Dreams in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ms-nes-ps.html

snd there's more from http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...s-edition.html with Masada and Rudiementary Peni

Fiddler's closing out old cases and sorting through files in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...es-patrol.html

Almost there! http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...63-2015-a.html reaches 2013 with Chance the Rapper, Run The Jewels, Danny Brown and Liz among others. Meanwhile, preparing for the closing of this journal, Goofle's opening a new one, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...oving-sec.html. Check it out.

Call in Superman to repair your computer, have some Lemon Jelly and find Paradise. Where else but http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nnerspace.html?

Ki's addiction to Team Fortress 2 seems to have passed, and now you'll find him hip-deep in Fallout 3, if you head down to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...is-arcade.html --- just don't make any sudden moves! That guy is trigger happy!

In literally one second before the deadline, Pet_Sounds is enthusing over his love for baseball on http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...crap-heap.html --- and now he's gone to watch a game...

If you're interested in the prehistory of music, check out http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ory-music.html, or if your tastes run to something a little less demanding, TechnicLePanther can cater for that too, with http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-pop-flop.html and Wiz Khalifa on the chopping block.

I've tried to update a few of my other journals, now that the Marillion discography has come to an end, so in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html we have more Spooks and The New Statesman, while The Hammers of Misfortune are featured in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html and the second chapter of Watchmen makes its appearance in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-2000-ad.html. Finally, as promised, an intensive review of Iron Maiden's classic Powerslave is the first album reviewed as http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...e-you-die.html

The problem with
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
is that I'm conscious of trying all the time not to be awarding it to the same people. I mean, between them, Ki, Unknown Soldier and Innerspaceboy could alternate on scooping this each week, but I like to try to give everyone a chance. So although I could certainly have chosen ISB's hilarious article on dumping Windows for Linux, I decided instead to give the accolade to this:

35. Rudimentary Peni - Death Church (1983)

While not my introduction to this band....this album solidified an unending love for them...

the music is a bit slower for the most part....but is so drenched in despondency....it matches the lyrics of coping with ones own loss of sanity and discontent and misunderstanding of human beings so perfectly

i can honestly say i would have never gotten into punk music if not for this band....this is one of the first albums where i listened to the lyrics and allowed the music to be a representation of those feelings....which is exactly what i love about punk rock.....a perfect mix of lyrical expression that matches the music perfectly

on a personal note....when i first bought this album in the mid 90s i was smoking a lot of weed....in the town i lived in weed was a very social drug and usually involved neo hippies.....i would go to their houses buy my shit but they always wanted to hand out and get high (on my weed) and talk about their music.....i would always endure their jam band 60s bullshit and then after looking through their record collection say "hey can i choose next?"...they assumed i found some incredible album....but instead i would pull mine from my bag and play this....pointing out the specifics on the song "Radio Schizo"

And that's all we have time for this week.
See you in the funny papers!
Toodles!

Thanks to a Trojan discovered on my computer after a FIFTEEN HOUR search by MSE, a trojan that was slowing me to a crawl and turning my usual 200 mbps download speed to ****ing seven! I am therefore very late getting this update sorted, so let's get right down to it without further ado.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-oblivion.html and takes us into the update with “The Batlord's Top Ten Most Righteous Comic Book Discoveries of the Past Year, including The Ultimates, Injustice and of course Harley Quinn

while keeping totally current, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...s-edition.html gives us NWA's Straight Outta Compton and Jawbreaker's 24 Hour Revenge Therapy

and Jason DeRulo is this week's offering as http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...oving-sec.html

Innerspaceboy is genre-hopping and also listening to (and watching) The Sound of Noise in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nnerspace.html

Squidphysics, drum covers and screenshots --- as well as Dungeon Siege III, How To Survive and Rocket League down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...is-arcade.html, and get ready for Horror Week, beginning September 1st!

Joe Colley and Jason Lescalleet are some of the http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...cking-out.html according to Occulthawk

Chapters 19, 20 AND 21 in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...rgy-story.html --- Oriphiel has been a busy bee this week!

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ory-music.html continues as TechnicLePanther explores tribal music, and The Weeknd is his http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-pop-flop.html this time out.

Havne't really looked at my current journals this week but that's because I've been largely concentrating on my new ones. In http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...e-you-die.html we have a deviation from the chronological order in order to oblige Frownland, who asked me to review Cattle Decapitation's Monolith of Inhumanity, and I did. I'll get you back for that, Frown! Then there's yet another new journal from me, as I open http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...heme-park.html, with the first theme being Autumn, and songs from Justin Hayward and John Coltrane up there already. More to come.

Accept's Metal Heart is at number 8 as Unknown Soldier continues http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html through 1985.

As I say, I'm late getting this update done tonight so I'm going to cut it short, but I would be remiss if I did not award
http://www.trollheart.com/workhorse.png
to Oriphiel, for all his hard work on his journal. I know I could say the same about Ki, but I don't think he has any more room on his mantlepiece for more awards, and that left column is looking very shaky...

That's it for this week. See you in seven.
Till then,
Toodles!

The Music Banter Members Journals Weekly Update Thread, week-ending August 30 2015

Not, to be fair, a whole hell of a lot happening this month, and even my own contributions were hastily put together and posted this morning. Slow end to the month? It would seem so, but still, there's stuff to read about, so let's dive in.

Anteater is back to kick us off this week as he explores Equinox by Styx in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...r-journal.html

while bob continues to educate us to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...s-edition.html with Kate Bush, Gorilla Biscuits and Death In June.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...es-patrol.html seem to have taken a left turn into the paranormal...

Moving day playlists, Soul Coughing, Echowaves ... there's just too much happening at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...nnerspace.html for me to do it justice here. Go talk to innerspaceboy, he'll fill you in.

Don't bug Ki though with any questions. He's too busy playing Rocket League (yeah he's still at it) as well as talking about the games that disappointed him (Farming Simulator Ki? Really? Why didn't you just buy Virtual Paint Drying?) and preparing for Horror Month, which is due to start in the next day or so down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...is-arcade.html

Chapters 22 and 23 of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...rgy-story.html are now up.

http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...listening.html is the question: Green Jelly is apparently the answer...

and the other question is http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-pop-flop.html as TechnicLePanther places Silento under the microscope.

Life on Mars finally returns in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html while there's Death Valley Athletic Club and Kamelot in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html, and more autumn-themed music in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...heme-park.html with Last Autumn's Dream and Hostsonaten.

Number seven in Unknown Soldier's countdown for 1985 is Icon, and you can hear it at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html

Which brings us to the end of another update, the last one for August as it happens. Coming next week...

I find it very inconsiderate that you would schedule Metal Month to coincide with when I actually started writing journal entries.

Instead of being a Smart ass why don't you do the weekly update to help Trollheart out, I'm sure you'd make everybody laugh here,
