Yeah, despite taking all that time earlier in the week to create and organise the Welcome Thread for New Members, which seems to be getting decent responses, I've still had time to check out all your journals and write this week's update thread.

And here it is.

We start off this week with a brand new journal. Yay! Black Francis invites us to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...l-journey.html, with much discussion about Nirvana. And Korn. Also Sonic Youth, The Breeders and Nada Surf. Among others. Good start, look forward to more.

Down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...seur-cave.html Briks is digging into metal still (not literally: he'd need some sort of pneumatically powered machine for that) and finding himself disillusioned with both Ghost and Dragonforce. Well who woulda thought? Ah, I still have a soft spot for the Dragons, no matter what anyone says. :shycouch: :band:

Just before he left on yet another extended trip to Banland, Butthead was writing about more Taking Back Sunday and, well, feminism, one of his favourite hobby horses, in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...therapy-s.html. Badly received by some. Not sure if that's why he got banned, but with a guy like Butthead it could be due to almost anything he said. That guy needs to watch his attitude more closely... Ah, but then he wouldn't be Butthead, would he?

Another new journal starting up this week comes from Carpe Mortem, who is apparently the http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ker-sound.html and is reviewing (with appropriately sailor language) Candlemass's “The 13th sun”.

Goofle's really kickin' it out for http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ening-log.html with albums from (deep breath) Bay Blue, Armand Hammer, Future Islands (boo!), The War on Drugs (yay!), First Aid Kit, Eiffel 65, The Kooks and a whole ton more, as you might expect.

Pet Sounds is slowing down a littel in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ly-review.html with songs only from The Drifters and the Smiths! Wanna buck your ideas up son if you want to stay up here at the top! ;)

There's a follow up to “Forgotten melodies” in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ool-stuff.html

and speaking of melodies (nice segue, huh?) Silenzio is looking into Melody's Echo Chamber in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...mix-music.html as well as the debut solo album from Sigur Ros's Jonsi Birgisson and a jazz album by Concha Buika. Eclectic or what? Oh, she's also just finished, or about to finish, five years of business school, so congratulations on that girl and we wish you all the best in your exams!

Try as you might, there's no way to avoid my journals! I now have SIX of them. No, they're not breeding. At least, I don't think so... I've resurrected some of the more neglected ones this week, so we have the unanticipated return of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...m-reviews.html, with the new album by Band of Skulls. You want a laugh? Read my attempts to predict what the songs were going to be like! Also making a brief stop by this week is http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ver-heard.html featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Over at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html there's a review of “Aura” by Asia, another album in the Progarchives Top 100 with Millenium from Poland, and a new section called “Trollheart's Rocking Chair”. It's about ... ah hell. If you're that interested, come on in and find out!

Much happening at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html too, with the first episodes of “Robin of Sherwood” and “Life on Mars”, plus the finale of “Mayday”, as we finally find out who the killer is. That's shocking enough, but even then there's a last twist... One more journal to tell you about and it's my latest, where in [url]http://www.musicbanter.com/members-journal/76199-nightmare-jazz-street-trollhearts-voyage-into-world-jazz-blues.html[/url,] I start listening to recommendations from people, beginning with “Take five” by Dave Brubeck.

Unknown Soldier brings the curtain down with a flourish, a bang and of course a fistful of guitar solos on this week's update as he explores the music of Samson and Y&T in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html, and gives the Batlord mixed feelings...

When I first instigated “Post of the week” I didn't say that a post I chose would have to be something I agreed with, just one that caught my attention and was worth drawing yours to. My justification, if any is needed, for choosing this week's to be the post of a man who has been banned, but surely will be back to put more controversy in our lives than a brothel full of MPs or senators! Yeah, it's him: love him or hate him you can't ignore him, and so this is my

Butthead, why do you hate feminists so damn much? Why do you constantly mock Tumblr? Why do you laugh heartily at social activism through social media?? Why do you trash social justice warriors? Why do you loathe professional victims?

It all stems from guilt. Not my guilt, of course, because I have none. I've said in other threads, but I have no shame or guilt with any of my feelings or who I am as a person. I don't feel bad about being White, Straight, Cis-Gendered, Hung, American, etc. The guilt I am referring to comes from the Tumblr tards of the world who bark about 'male/white/cis/whatever privilege" and want people like me to feel guilty about it. If you are one of those people, please take direction from the one and only Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, and shove your opinions straight up your candy ass. You people are as smart as a bag of cheese curls.

Because I am privileged enough to have a social life, family life, and work environment where I very rarely run into one of these turds-for-brains, most of my interaction with these fools comes via the internet, and strangely enough they usually aren't even interactions at all. More often than not, it's me reading an article or comment on Facebook/Twitter/Reddit. For that, I feel fortunate, and though I realize the pointlessness of allowing my jim jims to become slightly rustled, this is my journal and I just want to vent.

So, back to the guilt tripping. The main agenda of the internet armchair activists is mainly two things. 1) Make people like me feel guilty and 2) Discredit the hard work and success of people like me. It's so obvious once you break past the walls of stupidity and wade through the trenches of hypocrisy and irony. These people will never admit that because they have convinced themselves it's not true through the power of the hivemind and their strength in numbers.

In the rare event that a young man or child is reading my journal, I will present you this warning about the internet: Nobody who mentions your privilege is being genuine or sincere. The reason privilege is brought up at all is because of the two reasons I listed above the picture of the two white guilt losers. It's a way for someone with a loser lifestyle to justify their shitty life to themselves, while at the same time discrediting any hard work you've done. I know I shouldn't, but I do take it personally because I know the hard work I've put in through many years to get where I'm at in life. My hardships aren't on par with any starving Ethiopians or Congo War victims, but I know how hard it was to get from A to B and I'm a proud person. You can actually be proud of yourself while still acknowledging that people helped you along the way. Who would have guessed?!?!

The idea is to subtly trivialize your success and chalk it up to privilege and luck. Which is ironic, because the very fact we are using the internet makes us all extremely privileged. Of course, these shart stains can't realize that because they have developed a victim complex and can't see themselves in any light that isn't dimly oppressive. They almost always lack a solid perspective and aren't able to see the big picture because of the blinders of pseudo-oppression.

Not everyone is created equal. Some people have hardships that are nearly impossible to overcome. Some people are born into terrible situations. I recognize all of these things. But living life as a victim will never get anyone anywhere - it's unhealthy and unproductive. Dwelling on what you don't have won't get you what you want, it's that simple. So, a lot of this BS I'm talking about comes from that victim complex, which whether it's actually more prevalent or just seems to be, is still harmful for everyone. The problem is that it's convenient for the lazy.

Time to wrap it up for now because I am feeling uninspired and lazy. tl:dr anyone who mentions priv is a loser, ignore them and strive for glory.

And with that I bid you a fond adieu. Remember we're always looking for new journals here --- two started this week and very welcome they are. If you feel the itch, best thing to do is scratch it. Hope to see you around here again, and until next week at the same time,
Toodles!

Thnx for the mention TH :)

i've never done a musical journal before so it's a learning experience for me.

I've been checking out your Classic album journal, i even wanted to suggest one to you cause i would like to hear your review on it but i was afraid to ask.

i also enjoyed Yorkedaddy's journal, i hope he keeps updating it.

This whole thing of reading journals and making journals is a new thing for me but im digging the experience so far.

Glad you're having a blast Francis! Your journal's pretty good so far. Throw your rec at me, though I have said that I'm going back to my own list for a while. Still, you never know: if it's interesting enough....

Thanks Trollheart for your nice review/mention and wishes! :)

Does that mean we'll see some The Queen is Dead soon?

No. I said interesting. Nothing interests me about the Smiths.
Also, I just said throw it my way and I'll see. My own list has suffered as I've entertained people's suggestions and requests over the last few months so in general I'm just concentrating now on the albums I had originally intended to feature, but if something intrigues me enough, you never know...

Um, why? I can like a band everyone else hates if I want. Not saying I'm a huge fan but I don't hate them. Also, what has that to do with prog? If you had said it put my METAL cred into question, fair enough. But prog? I don't think anyone here would deny I know my prog rock...

If you can dig such an awful band with such incompetent (nonexistent) songwriting abilities (and this is coming from someone with little to no knowledge or ear for songwriting) then I can only assume that you like Pink Floyd cause they sound pretty. Booyah.

Your logic is flawed. I know why I like Floyd. I don't make any pretensions to thinking DF are cool or great, but considering all the hate they get here and elsewhere I was just surprised that they didn't suck as I thought they would. You know me: if it's metal, has melody and I can understand the singer I'm usually fine with it. Is it original? Hell no. Do I care? See last response.

I would probably not listen to a full album again for pleasure (though I may review another just to annoy you) but I would grab a track or two for a playlist and not feel in the least ashamed or embarrassed.

Yeah. Still don't care. If I like how it sounds I'll listen to it. If 100000 people hate it and me and one other person likes it, so what? We've all different tastes and I'll be damned if I'm going to stop listening to a band just because they're universally hated and laughed at. If I did that I wouldn't even exist!

Any nonsuckiness they may have is merely down to their blatant ripping off of Stratovarius and they deserve no credit for it. Bu yao.

I'm not saying they deserve credit. I'm not about to say they should be nominated for a Grammy or anything. But I don't hate 'em and nothing you or anyone else says will change that. You do hate them and I don't have a problem with that. When you rule the world you can order me to hate .... oh hold on, have I said too much? Too soon? When IS the mind-destroying ray due to be finished anyway? I thought you said Thursday....

Sure, if you want. I'm just making it clear that for the moment I'm concentrating on the original list I made, so if I take your rec it won't be reviewed for quite some time. But by all means, send me your idea.

Update for week ending April 13 2014

For the first time in a very long while there's a whole page of updates to get through! Better start writing now then...Anteater is back to complete the story of his musical influences when growing up, culminating in his love for Jazz and featuring such artistes as Herbie Hancock, Sun Ra and Pat Metheny in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html Oh, and with some videogame music thrown in.A new journal this week is from the lovely and missed Astronomer, the member formerly known as Lateralus, and she's looking http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...c-journal.html at some sixties icons such as Diana Ross, Joe Tex and Bobbie Gentry. Be watching this one closely. There's a whole lot happening in Black Francis's journal, where he's continuing to tell us about http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...l-journey.html and looking at, among many others, NOFX, Violent Femmes, Seether and The Stranglers.Speaking of Astronomer's previous username (synchronicity, huh?) Briks is reviewing that very Tool album down http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...seur-cave.html way, and doesn't seem too impressed by it. He's also checking out Electric Wizard, and seems more enamoured of that: the heaviest album I've ever heard, to quote the man.Twiztid, Flipper, Chrome and Swearing at Motorists: no, not the misadventures of someone unable to install the latest Google browser while driving and playing pinball. These are just some of the many albums Goofle is listening to in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ening-log.htmlFranco has started a journal! Well he says it's his second but I don't remember the first. Anyway, in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...epe-kalle.html he promises to talk about music other than African. And in his first post he's talking about ... anyone? African music. D'oh! Still, he also looks at AC/DC's “Highway to Hell”, so perhaps we can expect a more varied choice of music? Time will tell. And speaking of the Australian rockers, LadyisLingering includes them in the latest feature in her http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ic-memory.html, as well as Fleetwood Mac, Steppenwolf and more.Powerstars drops in to tell us about Nirvana's being inducted into the R&RHoF in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...sicalness.htmlwhile Silenzio is looking at a chillwave album from Washed Out in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...mix-music.htmlWhich brings us back to me. Trying to maintain all these journals is not easy, but this week there's a review of This Patch of Sky's latest in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html with the scores for the latest album tackled in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...m-reviews.html, and getting deeper into http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...azz-blues.html, there's a review of “Offramp” by The Pat Metheny Group. Meanwhile http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html has, as promised (or threatened), two reviews of prog albums from the list of 100 Top Prog Albums of 2013, with Karfagen and Amplifier. More to come. That just leaves us this week with http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html, with more Red Dwarf, Frasier and Onedin Line, as well as the finale of Mayday. New stuff coming soon!

Meanwhile back in the early 80s Unknown Soldier is checking out Def Leppard's “High and dry” as he continues http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html

and Urban is back with another episode in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...who-thing.html, this time it's from the Tennant era (and it's bad...) ;)

Finally, last but not least, YorkeDaddy closes us out with reviews of Bombay Bicycle Club, Nickel Creek and Mac Demarco in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-personal.html

So who's this week's
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
Well, strangely enough and I think for the first time it's awarded to someone but not that person's journal, in other words, it's posted in someone else's. When I read how excited and enthusiastic Astronomer was about Urban's Doctor Who Thing I just had no hesitation in awarding this to her. Not only does it surely make Urban happy that someone is so into his journal, on which he has worked so hard, but it just fair warms the cockles of your heart to see someone so genuinely passionate about a show, and a journal. So young lady, this one is yours. And welcome back!

The Lazarus Experiment is definitely one of those "filler" storylines that pretty much epitomises the badly CGI-ed monsters and predictable endings and so forth (however, at least it's not as bad as The Unicorn and the Wasp...) One thing I did like about the episode was the idea of throwback DNA creating a so seemingly unhuman monster, even if it was slightly ridiculous. In a way it also set up the ongoing suspicion that Martha's family have about The Doctor and the trouble that it will eventually cause in the major plotlines of that series.

I loved Martha as a companion, and it's episodes just like these that never did her justice!

Anyway, really enjoying the thread (that I pretty much just read in its entirety) :thumb: Love your little references to other aspects of the show... the big red button.

And so, after a pretty busy week in Journaltown, a week that saw two more new journals open and some updated that hadn't been for a little while, it's kudos to eeryone who works so hard on their material and time for me to take my leave once again. By the way, is anyone else having that annoying problem with posts in your journal that are correctly formatted when you upload them but later lose the formatting and appear as one big block of text, and have to be redone? Anyone getting that other than me? It happened again today. Annoying to say the least. If anyone knows why that's happening I'd love to hear from you.

Till next week then,
Toodles!

Astronomer 04-13-2014 05:19 PM

Update for week ending April 20 2014

As I write this update I'm speaking to you from beneath a huge mound of crumpled cardboard boxes and silver foil, with bits of discarded chocolate egg all around me. Yeah, I wish! Nah, I'm being good this year and not a piece of Easter Egg has passed my lips. But I hope you're all enjoying your Easter, and looking forward to the bank holiday, not that they mean anything to me any more.

So then, let's get on with the Easter update shall we, and see what you bunnies have been up to...

Having finished his little trip through childhood, (what do you call a young Anteater anyway?) it's reminsicences of a different sort for the bug-swallowing one in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html as he waxes lyrical over a computer game he used to love

while Black Francis is being Guided by Voices. Not literally of course: he's looking at the band's work in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...l-journey.html

and Briks is down on Metallica in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...seur-cave.html, with harsh words for “Load” and “... and justice for all”. He ain't got good things to say about “Rocka rolla” by Priest either. He's in a mean mood this week, is our Briks! Someone get this man a Easter Egg! Stat!

Who would have thought Franco would be into booty? Well he's featuring it in his http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...epe-kalle.html, with songs by Bumba Sparxx and Rick James, among others.

Frownland is still http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...wnapilago.html, but at least he's enjoying a gig he went to by The Magic Band. Read all about it: he's really impressed!

And speaking of the stranded one, his own band's album, among others, has made it on to http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ening-log.html, along with Aesop Rock, Badbadnotgood and Outkast. Well, Mick. Sort of OutKast. I think. What do I know? Check them out! Also Blackfoot (yay) though he hates it (boo!), Tipper, our own YorkeDaddy's band cloudcover (why does he not like this?) and Liz, whose album cover made me think her elbow was a tit --- tletattle, um... ;)

Silenzio is listening to a Low Roar in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...mix-music.html

and I've just got the two journals updated this week. More prog top 100 albums in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html, with efforts from Laquesis and Leap Day, also a "Run for Cover" special on Motorhead's “Ace of spades” and a new section called “Lafftrak”, featuring the sillier side of music. Over at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html French horror drama Les Revenants heads towards its conclusion while Futurama returns for season two.

Urban's back with “The Sensorites” in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...who-thing.html as well as every episode ranked --- not by him, by six thousand, seven hundred fans. Why such a precise number? Enquiring minds want to know. All right, I want to know.

And Unknown Soldier continues http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html with Riot and one of my own personal favourites, The Tygers of Pan-Tang. Ah, memories!

You know what? **** it. I'm giving this to Franco this week. Could there be another post that encapsulates what the man is all about? Plus it made me laugh like a drain. And it mentioned Vanilla. Ten out of ten, man! This one's yours! :thumb:

I love this song because I love booty so much. This song is the perfect there for booty lovers. I mean it puts the song saying Booty rocking everywhere. It is a genius song and it had then Ying Yang Twins who are dirty as hell. I enjoy this song because it gives girls confidence to shake that booty. Vanilla, this song is for you. If you have any bootylicious girls and love their booty. Please play this song.

Before I close I'd like to introduce a new section. This may not be weekly (probably won't be) but will be awarded every time I think a journal deserves it. Ladies, gentlemen, and those of you who are not sure or “would rather not say”, I give you...
http://www.trollheart.com/int3.png
This is a section where I will be highlighting the journal that has generated the most debate during that week. The one with the most posts about generally the same, or a related issue, by the most people. This is important, because not only does it mean that journal is being read and enjoyed, but it shows that the amount of work being put into it is being rewarded.

So, this week's inaugural “...interesting” award goes to
http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...who-thing.html
It's a while since I've seen this level of interest generated in any journal, with a real conversation going back and forth, and forum members who shall remain nameless unless you read the journal acting just like Doctor Who nerds should!

So keep it up, Urban! You're obviously hitting the right chords here. Long may it continue!

And so we come to the end of yet another update. You know, you'd think I'd be fed up with doing these by now, but I'm actually looking forward to next week's. Yeah, I know: there are places for people like me...

Till next week,
Toodles!
(And Happy Easter!)

Update for week ending April 20 2014

Christ on a unicycle! I'm late this week! Let's just get straight on with it shall we?

Anteater is looking at Heavy Bones (no, he hasn't taken up anthropology or paleantology! They're a band!) in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html

and Black Francis is moving on to his main loves, The Pixies and of course Frank Black in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...l-journey.html

while Franco is talking about Youssou N'Dour, Joss Stone and more AC/DC in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...epe-kalle.html

Goofle
is on something of a Holly Golightly binge in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ening-log.html, though he still manages to fit in lots of other music, including James, Eat Static, The Raincoats, Aesop Rock and even Pepe Kalle! Franco must be thrilled!

Silenzio is listening to Panama, and goes out of her way to point out they are Australian, NOT Austrian! Find them in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...mix-music.html

Just the two journals updated from me this week. There's another two top 100 prog albums in Progenesi and Flaming Bess in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html, as well as another “Return to Childhood” and more MUSH with that classic from 10cc, and I also review an album in the style of someone you may remember ... who rules? ;) Over at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html there's a new section called “Cinema Craptastique”, featuring that classic “Battle beyond the budget, sorry stars” and finally I get my Doctor Who coverage underway, with the first episode of the rebooted series. Lots more to come, of course.

Unknown Soldier is looking at works from Triumph and MSG (no, not Monosodiumglutumate, you fool!) as well as having a healthy debate about girls in tight leather. Um. It's all where you'd expect it to be: http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html

And that's it. Bit of a lack of updating this week, but I'm so late doing this I don't even have time to pick a Post of the Week. Sorry about that. Been so busy, and there's yet so much more work to do.

See you all next week, hopefully on time!
Till then
Toodles!

Update for week ending May 4 2014

So here we are in May, with kids no doubt eyeing the calendar eagerly awaiting release from school on their summer holidays and I equally eyeing the same dates, but not quite so eagerly. Oh I remember what it was like to be off school for three months, sure, but one of the benefits of getting older is that you are allowed suddenly think kids have too much time off school. When I had a job I was lucky to get four WEEKS a year off, and these little brats get three MONTHS? Doesn't seem fair somehow. Next thing their ghetto blasters will be pumping out the latest chart-toppers at full volume during the afternoon, stolen cars screeching around the streets, football in the park ... gah! Kids these days... wasn't like this when I was .... mutter mutter...

Sorry, where was I? Oh yeah: first update for May. So what have we got, before these screaming hordes descend on us with their ... sorry ... Keep your mind on the task at hand, old man! Well, let's see: we have two brand new journals from brand new members, along with the return of two that haven't been updated in a while. Let's get to it then shall we?

Anteater is enthusing over the delights of the Mahavishnu Orchestra in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html

and Black Francis continues his exploration of the Pixies in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...l-journey.html

Whether Briks got the idea for his latest theme from my writing reviews in the style of Nickelback_rules last week or whether this is just (ahem!) coincidence, it's apparently Nickelback week down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...seur-cave.html, as he compares Chad to Corey and puts “Silver side up” alongside “Iowa”. He also delves into some more metal , with a look at Sabaton. Um. Never heard of them...

One of those new journals of which I spake comes in the form of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ack-sound.html, where one of our newest members looks at albums from Panopticon and Blood Ceremony. With a title like that on his journal, expect heavy. And dark. Maybe. But definitely one to watch.

If you're http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...wnapilago.html why not learrn a little about Frownland's very own band, Wolves in Sheepskin?

Too busy to update http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ening-log.html, (and who would blame him, with all that music he listens to?), Goofle nevertheless has presented his RYM list for you to peruse.

In rapid succession, those two journals making a comeback are http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ic-memory.html, where Ladyisingering is looking at Squeeze, Bowie and others while

Mondo returns with http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...istortion.html and talks about Rudimentary Peni, with more promised updates soon.

And the other new journal this week is http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ic-sanity.html, with entries on everything from boybands to Tony Hawk! Interesting!

Always a good read, Silenzio has much about Lykke Li in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...mix-music.html

A new section and the return of an old one in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html as I introduce (um) “Impressive Intros” and bring back “Keep it simple”, while also reviewing two more prog albums on the list with Russian band Azazello and Dutch outfit Exivious. The final episode of season one of “Les Revenants/The Returned” makes its appearance at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html leaving the way clear to bring in ... ah, but that would be telling wouldn't it? Yes it would. So tell us Trollheart! Um, no. Not yet.

Unknown Soldier pays homage to one of the best live heavy metal albums ever in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html

and Urban lists his favourite actors he wishes/wants to see play a part in the upcoming season in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...who-thing.html

Finally, before he was banned (whether permanently or not I don't know) YorkeDaddy made a valiant effort to explain why he's become such a troll in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-personal.html Sorry man but I don't think anyone is going to accept that as an excuse. I hope you get back here, but if so I hope you have the good sense to tone down your attitude or you'll end up being permabanned, if you haven't already been.

And so to this week's
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
This time I want to give it to Frownland, whose journal has only been going a short while but who, in this latest entry, shares with us some personal stuff about himself and his band. As usual, YouTube links have been removed but if you think you might be into WiSK's brand of expereimental noise rock, then head to his journal where you can listen to the videos and then maybe throw a deserving band some cash and download their albums.

And Now The Part Where I Talk About Myself

Musicbanter regulars, you surely know all about my group Wolves In Sheepskin because I never shut up about us. Today I'll be reviewing our most well received (and best selling) album, Indecent Vibrations. This album is my second favourite of our output, with A Van Per Oven being my favourite. This music speaks to me because the group does what we love as opposed to what would sell or sound appealing, and I'm glad to say that I'm a member of one of my favourite bands.

Indecent Vibrations consists of four tracks ranging from 6 to 17 minutes in length. It is entirely improvised apart from basic song structures that I came up with ("when I start to do this, change to that"). Stryder Rymer plays guitar for tracks 1, 2, and 4 and mandolin on the 3rd, Christophe Bassett (myself) plays guitar on the first track, electronics on the second, and drums on the last two, and Zach plays drums on the first two tracks and guitar on the final two.

The opener, Robot Intestines has Zach on drums and Stryder and I on guitar. It starts off with a kickdrum assaulted with reverb before the guitars enter. The sound is noisy and industrial, which is why we named the track Robot Intestines. The first minute or so is slower and more droney until it breaks into a faster part where indigestion occurs in the robot's intestines.

The song carries on like this with the crazy and noisy soundscape offering a variety of electric guitar noises from myself and rumbling rif***e from Stryder. There are points where we slow back into the opening part before breaking into another chaotic passage. The track ends on a drone and closing drums. This one is my favourite track on the album, and one of my favourite WISK tracks overall. Everybody did a great job on this song, and I don't have a favourite player on it because the sounds meld together so well. We recorded this track in my garage and after we were done with this tune, my dad came out and said "why don't you play a SONG?" so we knew this was a really good track if he felt the need to say something about it.

The second track is Flashback, where Stryder is on prepared guitar, Zach plays a reverb box and drums, and I play effects-heavy theremin. This track clocks in at 17 minutes long and is the longest on the album. It starts off very ambient with the players trading echoey and strange sounds. Throughout the track the theremin abandons the ambient atmosphere that the other two instruments are creating and overlays them with other-wordly sounds. About 9 minutes into a theremin solo comes in that makes you regret taking the brown acid. The other instruments grow in intensity until the quasi-sudden end of the track.

Out of the four tracks on this album, this one is my least favourite, but it's still a great track nonetheless. We thought that Flashback would be an appropriate track name for obvious reasons.

Then we have the last two tracks which are rather similar but still very different animals. Anyeurysm, which is intentionally misspelled as a reference to our album Any of Many, is a noisy track where Stryder jumps on the mandolin, Zach plays the guitar, and I sit at the drums. It starts off with a tremolo guitar and mandolin trade-off combined with drums. There's one tom that really complements the track as it's very prominent and gives the track some semblance of order to the track. There are points where you can't even differentiate what's each instrument is doing as it's a great wall of noise. I'm rather proud of my drum work on this track, especially the from the point where I rapidly play the snare up until the end of the song. It carries on in the noise ridden industrial sounds until it ends abruptly (the reason for this being that my recorder ran out of battery, the actual performance ran at about 12 minutes).

The closing track, Echoes of a Distant Memory has the same line up as Anyeurysm but this time with Stryder on guitar. A strum of the electric guitar and the clunkety drums enter. This one has more standard drumming in the beginning that breaks into a fast paced, almost Han Bennink-esque style. The guitars on this track are anything but standard. They're very angry and inseparable, and that thing called melody that Trollheart is always going on about is gone from this track. Everything is lost in the wall of noise. The track continues on in the metal-influenced aggression that we hear in the beginning of the song until we get another abrupt end. Again, this is because of the recorder running out of battery.

This album was incredibly fun to make and I find it a lot of fun to listen to. The sound of this album is somewhat unparalleled in our other six albums, save for a vague similarity on some tracks from A Van Per Oven and the title track from Lizard of Ox, which sounds like Indecent Vibrations on heroin and bath salts. We found a unique kind of sound that's specific to us with this album, and that's something I'm glad that we've done.

For the art piece on this entry, I'm going to give you guys the album artwork to Indecent Vibrations. It's a photograph of the reflection of the inside of a drainage pipe. We got the lines to be really messed up by throwing rocks in the water and taking the photo right after.

Updates are still a little thin on the ground, but it's nice to see the slack being taken up by new journal authors, and Cicatrice and The Sane Psycho, you're both very welcome to Journaltown. Hope you enjoy your stay here and become productive members of the community, which based on your start I have no doubt will be the case.

That's it then for another week. I'm off to try to write some more interesting stuff for my journals and try to piece together three articles I'm working on at once, apart from anything else. Hope the sun is shining where you are. Summer, they say, is on the way! :)

Till next week

Oh, and .... May the fourth be with you!

Have a go at it.

Watch this space.
I must warn you, I don't hate Nickelback in the same way I don't hate Dragonforce, so I'll be giving them a chance. You know how I am; no artiste gets put down just by rep only. You may not be happy with the results.

But I'll certainly give it my best.

Okay okay: I'll do it firmly tongue-in-cheek. Nickelback Week is on! Check my journal... and be ye most afeared! ;)

Update for week ending May 11 2014

Ah yes, May. Spring is here. The birds are ... sheltering in the trees from the pounding rain? Bloody Ireland! Still, at least the sun is shining down in Journaltown, even if it is a lightbulb sun! (In-joke for progheads!) So what, as they say, has been happenin' man? Come with me...

Anteater is looking at a release by one of my alltime favourite bands, Iron Maiden, in a new section entitled “Overlooked and underrated albums” in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...n-dollars.html

while having dealt with the Pixies Black Francis is now looking at the solo careers of the individual members after the band split. In http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...l-journey.html he's first taking on the solo work of his namesake, Frank Black. Oh, and throwing in some skating music too!

Briks and I will be unleashing Nickelback Week upon you in a fortnight (he's been beta-testing it, sort of) but until then what's happening down at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...seur-cave.html? Well, er, Nickelback actually. Have to have a word about that with him. The albums are all great (not) and all, but surely people want to know the real man behind the music? Like how Chad won World War II? And how he reunited Italy? And surely the story of the first ever Christian Roman Emperor, Chad I, must be told? Watch this space!

A new journal already gathering many fans is http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ack-sound.html, where this week Cicatrice is looking at The Meat Puppets and the hilariously-named Satan's Satyrs! Don't miss it!

And a new journal begun only today comes from http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-journal.html where he's talking in his first entry about the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and also supplying Spotify links. Nice!

Having not been bothered to write an update last week Goofle is making up for it this week with artistes such as Jon Connor (thought he was leading the resistance against the Terminators?), Slowdive, Nancy Elizabeth, Strikeforce Diablo and the Lightning Seeds, plus a whole lot more that come under the heading of http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ening-log.html

Lots of good vibes from the 70s in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ic-memory.html as Ladyislingering listens to such artistes as The Association, Country Joe and the Fish and Argent, to name but three...

... while an old member returns and reignites his journal, as Musicphantom reopens http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...l-musings.html (after four years!) with a piece on Neutral Milk Hotel, while at the same time starting a new journal, http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...p-samples.html with music from Nujabes, Gangstarr and more.

Plankton has a new journal! Check out http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...listening.html where so far we have Godsmack, Winger, Clutch and more!

Nickelback Week is coming! Just thought I'd warn you, er, plug it again. Until then all I have for you in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...d-journal.html are the two latest albums on the list of PA's top 100 prog of 2013, with Sonus Umbra and The Twenty Committee, neither of which to be honest impressed me. Don't panic! though, as we begin our coverage of Douglas Adams' classic sci-fi cult comedy show “The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy” in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...-emporium.html, as well as a new section, in which I take you on a trip through “The Very Worst of The Twilight Zone”! To make up for so little in the Playlist this week I've managed to squeeze an update into http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...i-reviews.html, so go check out Edge of Thorns. I found them a bit meh though.

Unknown Soldier comes close to revealing his top album of 1981 in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...y-history.html but it ain't Maiden's “Killers!” That's at number 3, just above Motley Crue. So what will be number one? Keep reading to find out.

After something of an extended absence, William the bloody is back! He's leaping http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ta-coffin.html (yeah I know but what can I do with a title like that?) at ya with music from Ceremony and Violent Femmes. Welcome back man!

And we close on yet another new journal, from the esteemed Wpnfire, who's looking at electric guitar music in http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...irtuosity.html with contributions so far from Jeff Beck, Deep Purple and Front Line Assembly. Great start man!

People accuse each other and everyone else of being in cliques, and this could be true of Unknown Soldier, Anteater and I. We did after all start the Prog Rock Album Club and we can be seen discussing the same music. The two guys will also hopefully be helping m out with the new, barely-formed embryo we call The Heavy Metal Album Club. But all that aside, I feel I have to award this week's
http://www.trollheart.com/quill.jpg
to my man Ant, for his succinct and yet bang-on review of Maiden's “No prayer for the dying”, as below...

Quote:

Originally Posted by Anteater (Post 1448959)

So lets start off by stating the obvious: yes, 1990's No Prayer For The Dying wasn't within spitting distance of Seventh Son.. quality-wise, and the relatively lukewarm reception this album received from the hardcore Maiden fans upon release wasn't completely undeserved either. Whilst the musical landscape was beginning to change as the rumblings of "alternative" and "grunge" music echoed in the distance, the synth-laden approach Maiden had adopted on their two previous outings was still in vogue for most of the fans. Nobody went up to Dickinson, Harris or Smith and asked them to "strip down" their sound, but strip it down they did after their massive world tour wrapped up in '89. It didn't help that Adrian Smith decided to vacate about halfway into pre-production either, forcing Dickinson to recruit his buddy Janick Gers on axework to pick up the slack. No wonder people were pissed: the album hadn't even been recorded and many people had already convinced themselves it wasn't going to be any good! And as the saying goes...most prophecies are self-fulfilling ones for those that have already made up their minds beforehand.

In retrospect though, the truth is that No Prayer For The Dying is far from a bad album. It is definitely weaker than anything they band had done from '81 onwards up until that point...but this is Iron Maiden we are talking about. Even a 'by the numbers' release from them is going to be better than what others of their ilk might have cooked up as long as their classic lineup was mostly intact...and intact it was in 1990.

So instead of writing up a long review of why you should give this underrated record another shot if you had dismissed it previously based on a collective rep, I'll sum it up in five quick points-

1. It's an interesting album sonically. Bruce Dickinson not only snarls and curses a fair amount throughout (which is unusual for a Maiden album), but it seems like he and the band actually developed a sense of humor as well. ('Public Enema Number One', 'Bring Your Daughter...To The Slaughter', etc. etc.)

2. 'The Assassin', 'Run Silent Run Deep', 'Fates Warning' and 'Hooks In You' are all here, and those songs are prime goodies that would have fit well on any of the past classics.

3. It's one of the shortest albums in the IM's discography, with no cuts running longer than 5 minutes, which actually makes the experience fairly breezy regardless of how much you enjoy (or despise) the music contained therein.

4. Great album cover, and the last one where we'd see "classic" Eddie for awhile.

5. It's better than 'Fear Of The Dark' or anything recorded with Blaze Bayley...a LOT better! *shudder* :yikes:

So that's my take folks. Anyone got a second opinion?

I'd just like to say before closing that it is great to see so many new journals starting up, both from members who have been here a while and yet never took the plunge, and from ones I don't know at all but who look like they really have something. That's what it's all about: you don't have to be here three years or know everyone on the forum before you can start your journal. All it takes is the will and a bit of determination and effort, and you can really make a go of it. So fair play to those of you who have decided to take a risk. I know it won't be in vain.

That's it for this week; see you all next week as we draw closer to Nickelback .... okay, I get the message. I'll stop now.

May the Chad be with you all. :D
Toodles!

Update for the Update (sort of)

For those of you who have missed this (yeah, both of you over there!) I just wanted to let you know I will be getting back to doing this thread but at the moment I'm a little overwhelmed with the new stuff I have to get through. It may take a few weeks before I have everything sorted, but rest assured, the Weekly Journal Update Thread will soon be active once again, and this house will ring to the welcome sound of happy little authors running up and down the stairs, while the walls shake to a mixture of death metal, experimental jazz, AOR and every other damn thing...

So bear with me. It may take a while, but I'll get this going again.

Silenzio 09-04-2014 10:10 PM

Welcome back, Trollheart! :D
It's great to hear that this thread, one of the best on MB, will be revived soon.
I am looking forward to the updates of the next weeks, but please take your time!

Wow! That's high praise, Silenzio! I ... don't know what to say. I just started this as a way of keeping people informed as to what was happening in the journals, and hopefully encourage a few more to try reading them or even starting their own, but yeah, it seems to have become really quite popular.

Thanks for the boost, and I'll get back to this as soon as I can.

Josef K 09-08-2014 08:09 PM

So glad that this might be back - I have trouble keeping up with all the journals and this could really help. Thanks, Trollheart!

Unknown Soldier 09-19-2014 03:04 AM

I'd pretty much like to say that both Goofle and Sidewinders journals on the best albums of each year, serve as great listening lists for anybody wanting to really explore the best of rock since the 60s onwards (or be reminded) They're alike yet very different and anybody listening to both lists should cover the spectrum in some detail.
