Default Tyler, the Creator

Just discovered this dude. Really good. 19 year old emcee/producer. Has a great ear for beats and doesn't sample, his rhyming is tight too.

Upon reviewing this album, I think that he is ok not great. A lot of the songs revolve around rape and I'm not sure why, and the beats don't have much variety. That said, the beats are tight and he's a good rapper. It's worth at least one spin.

As a whole, i think the production is really good. It's a distinct sound, and i think the rape lyrics is pretty fun dark humour. Dude is a horny 17 year old, sex is on his brain.

He's gonna blow up big time.

I think the album goes a little bit far to be considered "pretty fun dark humour". Have you listened to the song where he talks about ****ing a dead chick? It's just going a little too far. I feel like I would be ok with it if it was a passing reference, but it seems like a major theme in this album.

Subject matter has never really bothered me in music. It's not like you can take it seriously, and as long as it's done in an interesting way (as oppose to something like ICP)i can usually get into it.

I like how when Eminem sings about the stuff he does it's just him being "over the top" to "make a point" and people glorified the early albums for it. Hell, I often hear Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique praised for it's lyrics. I don't have a problem with the lyrics, I thought the track Sarah was hilarious for instance, probably because prom sucked for me in high school.

Anyway the whole Odd Future collective basically blows my mind and makes me feel lazy (though they kind of have this Jay Reatard/Ryan Adams thing going on and I think they need someone to tell them they don't have to release everything they do...because some of it doesn't need to be released.) Tyler, the Creator is definitely the best out of the group though (followed by Earl Sweatshirt and Hodgy Beats, who also released some great albums this year.) The production is particularly interesting, because there seems to be a lot going on like you have these moments where it's very dark and other times light, and distorted and it's just, I don't know, it kept me interested.

Default Earl Sweatshirt "Earl" (2010)

first album..

Earl Sweatshirt "Earl" (2010"

More of a rough demo than an album, 16 year old Earl Sweatshirt delivers a sick, funny and creative release (produced by Tyler, the Creator, also of Odd Future fame.) Many people have called him (and his Odd Future brethren) the future of hip hop, and with such talent at such a young age it's easy to see why.

Love it, refreshingly gritty, we need more hip hop like this.

On my first listen now and loving it. Heard he was sent to bootcamp shortly after the albums release, hearing these lyrics I see the logic lol. Tyler The Creator is better imo, but this kid has potential.
