I wouldn't call it subtle, more cryptic. He can say some pretty dark stuff, but usually it's a little nonsense. Most of the time he relies on plays on words as well, but they don't work out like they should.

His darkest track i'm aware of as of yet is 64, then Igotagum probably, and i wouldn't argue either of them darker than the rape and murder sequences of Earl especially. Tyler i think is darker, but does incorporate more tongue-in-cheek humor (like on Copkiller).

The point is, anytime i listen to Hodgy closely, his lyrics are just so going-for-a-hit-then-missing. But his rhyme scheme, flow, and delivery? On lock.
