The fact that Johnny Knoxville is producing Tyler the Creator's soon-to-be adult swim jackass knockoff has me seriously losing interest in him. I know it has nothing to do with his/odd futures music, but the group seems to be really self absorbed, and more interested in proven themselves as recycled "in your face" pranksters then a collective of musical talent.
I see these guys seriously watering down their image, and becoming a one trick pony. The teen audience that loves Odd Future are gonna be adults relatively soon, and i don't see the Odd Future collective maturing, but fizzling out almost as fast as they came up. I know if you go like 20 pages back this is the exact opposite of what i was saying then, but honestly their new music is not a positive improvement over the mixtapes from 2 years ago which is concerning to me. |

Johnny Knoxville has hipster glasses and was put on by Spike Jonez, so i'm fine with the man.
I don't think they're prolific enough yet to judge their catalogue fully. They've been busy with shows and whathaveyou, and the music they did put out in a relatively short span isn't going to be that largely diverse (the most recent release being from Domo, of course; Mike G still has yet to release another album, as well as Mellohype). Tyler is obviously maturing and will hopefully let his fairly cultured taste and creative mind progress with him. This was bound to happen, of course, among fans (referring to your fizzling comment, sparkplug); the hype was huge, the expectations as well, so the somewhat stagnant state of OF right now is causing a loss in interest. I sure haven't checked their news in awhile, but i still care for the artists.

I don't know bro, Wu tang hasn't been able to top 36 chambers and they've been maturing as artists for decades.
Too often is the debut release the strongest. I think most of their acclaim stems from the fact that they are such a sharp contrast to all the other popular hip hop, but when judged on its own it's already gotten stale to me. Once people get tire of Odd Futures charisma i think they'll fade. You have to be an adept musician to mature and cross genres, which is why all those hardcore 80's punk bands never did **** after their stint(black flag). I'm playing devils advocate, but im tired of seeing everybody dressing like skater bois!!!! Imagine if a hardcore introvert, ugly, pale little swedish kid made this music first, it would cease to be good or new or anything. |

Well, i think the tolerant underground fans wouldn't look him over; he might be a force there. But i don't think a pale swedish kid would have the psychological disposition to make this music (all the things Tyler raps about, pretty much); the basis might be there, but the subtleties wouldn't. White kids usually go straight for the eminem jugular anyway.
You make a good point about Wu Tang, but by Tyler's taste in music alone you can see that, with some practice and dedication, he could pull off almost anything. Wu Tang are Hip Hop for sure, but Odd Future is inspired by a much broader field. Think of RZA, after all, who has gone on to do movie soundtracks for well respected filmmakers like Quentin Tarentino and Jim Jarmusch. Tyler loves James Pants, punk rock, heavy metal, old school, Lil B, and processes like Lil B. Lil B himself dabbles in a lot of styles, though usually Hip Hop. Tyler has a large capacity for influence, so i wouldn't doubt him. There's also Hodgy, who, even though seems like a purist, loves Sabbath (as does Left Brain). Personally, i'm thrilled for the new Mellohype to come out, if it already hasn't (has it?). Context is important for music, but i see what you mean about OF on its own. I think they're fairly creative in what they're doing, though, being so tolerant of each others difference in musical styles and influences; it's like an old utopia for Hip Hop minds to explore their limits in imagination. But (maybe) i'm just a fanboy. Tyler's follow was as good or stronger than his debut, Mellohype's even more so. Mike needs a followup for sure, and Domo i can't judge yet. Earl will hopefully be a well aged artist by his release, practicing his craft and whatnot. lulz at the skateboiz, i'm sorry if i offended you with my cut off shorts and volcom stones. : ))))

Is anyone really surprised by this?
I'm more into the Mr.Mutha****ingeXquire-Asap Rocky beef. I could see why other artists would hate him, he rapped pretty mediocrely over some clam casino beats and 4 months later he's touring with Drake. |
