None of those artists were a family of skateboarding teenagers. None of those artists got famous from self-promotion through the internet.
You act like catchphrases aren't an important part of hip hop. I'd say OFWGKTA has plenty of gimmicks, the use of the word "swag" not really being one of them. Those artists aren't as fun or easy for susceptible teenagers glued to mtv to get into. I wouldn't classify OFWGKTA, or at least tyler, as horrocore yet, let him release one album first. |

And I'd say Tyler's output especially is pretty horrorcore. |
doesn't mean the whole group's is^ hell, other than Tyler and Earl, the rest of the group can be pretty tame in subject matter (ex-Mike G, Domo, MellowHype). alot of their songs are really just about stuff they do and care about, like getting bitches and getting high, but I still say it's they WAY they do it (the so called "swag" you seem to hate) that makes it enjoyable. imo, hearing stuff like Gravediggaz and Kool Keith is alot less enjoyable than OF because of how blunt and dry they deliver their stuff. i'll say right now: I DON'T GIVE A SH*T ABOUT HORRORCORE, but Odd Future's way of using shock lyrics and crazy imagery in such a tongue in cheek manner makes me actually enjoy listening to lyrics about rape and insanity without feeling a large amount of cheesiness with it.

I think a large part of it has to do with their vibe. They're just cool to listen to, it's infectious.

They remind me a lot of early Wu-Tang with all the self-marketing and natural charisma. So I assume they'll make some good records, some mediocre ones, some bad ones. At least one will die young and the living ones will will go on to have music careers that go up and down. In 15 or 20 years they'll do an Odd Future reunion tour and play their most popular songs, etc. I do like them by the way. |
