i know when people think of OF the first dudes to come to mind are Tyler and Earl and Mellowhype, but the rest of the group deserves some recognition. listening to alot of the solo albums they released, there's some surprising diversity in sound and lyrical content. it's not all dark atmosphere and songs about rape and torture. guys like
Yea, everyone in the group is talented.
But Tyler and Earl both get mentioned more, because they're the two most talented.

Really? Im not seeing this at all, the lyrics way more "rapey" like that video said. A lot of people have been labeling them horrocore or something, and i can kinda agree with that.
I meant it in a general way, not taking into account the differences between the actual lyrics themselves. It just seems to me that they're more aligned with the variety of topics, beats and general sound that more underground artists thrived on, in comparison to that of more mainstream acts from then and now.

well i'll say that Earl is the best rapper out of everyone (he really is) and Tyler is the best all around (image, rapping style, producing tracks, etc.), but with Tyler it's more of a Jack-of-all-trades more than master of all. like i said before, i think Earl is the better rapper, and i think TJAOT and Left Brain make beastly beats that can rival and even surpass some of Tyler's. What i think Tyler's real strength lies is in bring all of these talents together and leading them as a group.
in a way i see him as the captain of the ship, but where would a captain be without his crew, you know?
i guess what i'm saying is that if it were only Tyler or Earl, it wouldn't be as appealing to me. the fact that Odd Future is a collective is a good thing because you have the very different personalities under one roof and styles that criss cross and work off of each other to make a good variety of stuff. My favorite part of OFWGKTA's music is the interaction these guys have, either where some of them will be featured on a guy's solo album or as skits before the songs. hell, i've been having more fun downloading each member's solo stuff and listening to the parts that become the whole than i would if i just kept replaying Bastard and Earl.
i'm not saying Tyler or Earl are bad or even average, they definitely deserve their recognition, but that the fact that OF's a group really elevates the music as a whole and makes it alot more entertaining.
for example, including the song Super Market i posted earlier,
these are actually some of my favorite songs by OF

maybe in an EXTREMELY general sense. Other wise, the topics they speak of, beats, etc all sound like newer hip hop. In fact, OFWGKTA has a lot of influence from mainstream acts, specifically gucci man, wacka flocka, and a lot of really heavy, bass dirty crunk music.
90's underground i think of digable planets and a lot of jazz oriented stuff, as well as the beginnings of EL-P and rhymesayer guys.

I'm probably not the best candidate for the kind of comparison I'm making, as I don't listen to much newer hip hop at all. The fact that I'm ok with that probably says something too.

What about gangster rap, that was a huge part of the 90's? OF to me, sound like a modern day extension of that sound; gritty beats and aggressive lyrics. I also don't think that OF can be compared to Gucci Man or Wacka. I hear no similarities other than a few small things with production.

Yeah Odd future is continuation of 90's rap sometimes, but then tyler says some pretty introspective kinda gimmicky gay **** lyric

(What'd you do?) I slipped myself some pink Zannies
And danced around the house in all-over print panties
My mom's gone, that ****in' broad will never understand me
I'm not gay, I just wanna boogie to some Marvin
Which definetly makes em sound liker newer hip hop, at least tyler

I'm definitely looking forward to Goblin's release and this is purely off of hype lol.
I haven't listened to The Creator or Bastard yet whatever the name of that album is but I will get around to it eventually.
