Actually it's not really a new rule at all nor is it fake nor is it devoid of any actual humanity. It's a very sensitive word to some people. Maybe you don't understand because you've never had a car full of intimidating dudes follow you around and yell "HEY TRANNY!" but if you did you might have some clue as to why the word might draw up some negative feelings in people.
