Bart Ehrman makes the point that the only better attested person who lived in 1st century Palestine was Josephus, who is only better attested because he left his own writing.

I don't agree really. Not the biblical version of events. Jesus had little to no antagonism towards or problems with Roman authorities prior to the crucifixion. According to the new testament the people he pissed off were Jewish religious authorities specifically. And the areas where he is somewhat subversive it's more aimed at religious tradition than anything else.

Yeah it's really a case of God, through his sprog, saying to the Jews "You guys think you have it all figured out but this is how it is." And the Jews going "Oh yeah? Well, what if we just crucify your son, huh?" And then God "You'd better not, or all my followers will hate you throughout eternity." Jews shrug. "Meh. What's the worst thing that could happen?"
