Yes, I hope your family stay safe, Grindy. I'm afraid this is a terrible time for Ukrainians.

Late in the day, I'm beginning to see what beautiful old buildings there are in Ukraine, thanks to this meme sent by the US ambassador in Kyviv in response to Putin's nonsensical historical justification for his invasion:-

This is all very ****ed up. To be honest I thought that the talks about Putin preparing to attack during the last weeks were mostly the US warmongering. Not that I like Putin, or wouldn't expect him to be ****ty, just that the US has a bit of a history.
Yeah, I think it was kind of like the boy who cried wolf once too often in our case.

Anyway, good to hear from you, Grindy. I hope everything works out for you and your family. Yeah, I guess Iceland could be an option as I too fear nuclear war being a possibility, probably for the first time in my life.

Glad you're ok grindy. I hope things will work out for your family, and for Ukraine of course.
Cuthbert also asked about you, btw. He'll be happy to know you're safe.

Hang in there Grindy. I gotta think that there’s a feeling of helplessness,
but regular updates with your family can ease the strain on both sides.

Best of hopes and wishes to you and your family, grindy.

We know both russians and ukranians in Norway. I'm thankful our russian friends have all condemned the war.

I'm guessing refugees may be coming to our town at some point. I work for the municipality and last time there was a refugee crisis, I reset and handed out lots of old computers from treatment plants, offices, public schools. It was good, but I was mostly working on my own. If needed, I'm hoping my workplace will do more to coordinate support efforts that aren't strictly work related this time around and that other businesses will too.

I've been monitoring wide-band radio and there were some reports that didn't seem believable, but pointed to the BBC for more info, so I went there and, apparently Russia wanted to get this whole thing done much quicker, but they are meeting up with forceful Ukrainians. and I'm seeing that the city of Kiev is getting ready for an enormous onslaught that is supposed to happen within the next hour or so. From the BBC live coverage:

Battle for Kyiv set to begin

Lyse Doucet

Chief International Correspondent, reporting from Kyiv

Tonight, at this midnight hour, stark warnings sound of an imminent onslaught against the heart of Kyiv.

“In 30-60 mins #Kyiv will be under attack never seen before. #Russia will hit us with all they have,” tweeted MP Lesia Vasylenko.

Air-raid sirens have pierced the darkness, amplified by warnings in buildings and neighbourhoods for residents to immediately take to shelters. This is already a city where life has dropped underground, to basements, bomb shelters, and metro stations-turned-bunkers. A strict curfew is in force until 8am on Monday.

There’s been a chilling quiet these last three days in the heart of Kyiv. An eerie stillness on emptied streets has been shattered by occasional crackles of gunfire, a thud of artillery and a thunder clap when missiles land in the distance, on the edges of a beleaguered capital.

A Russian invasion, now at the end of its third day, has seemed to stall on the edges of the city in the midst of concerted Ukrainian resistance – soldiers guarding city gates, civilians taking up arms, even taunting Russian soldiers as they advance in their tanks and armoured vehicles.

Reports from Moscow in recent hours spoke of orders to advance on the city “from all directions.”

In the dead of a Kyiv night, there’s an ominous sense that the battle for this city is about to be unleashed.

Moments like these make me wish I was the slightest bit religious so that I could say "God be with the people of Kyiv" and have it bare weight. There isn't a good agnostic way of saying "thoughts and prayers".

Honestly, my heart breaks for that city and I hope they give the Russians hell.

I saw reports that thermobaric rockets have been seen in the area. I hope Ukrainians give those ****ers hell but I think this is going to be absolutely horrific very soon.

On a lighter note these two are adorable.

Ukraine couple marry under fire then join fight to defend country hours after wedding
