Sh*t, hope none of you are in New Orleans now, I'm surprised there hasnt been a thread about this already.
|
It sucks cause all these oil thingos are getting closed down.

ouch sorry to hear that. yeah, we have some really good friends of the family down there right now, hopefully they got out ok.
|
goddamn, im prayin' fo' all those ppl. & places that are feelin' Katrina, i hate hurricanes
|
i hear 45% of US fuel comes from that area so gas(petrol for the Euros) is scheduled to rise 20 cents this week. :(
|
sounds fairly intense... wouldn't wanna be in that fucker's way...
|
I don't know about overseas, but all the morning news shows are constantly covering it.
|
i heard that the water pumps are pitiful in New Orleans and that the flooding has potential to reach 25 feet, which could submerge the city.

I just got back fromm down there a couple weeks ago. We were dropping off my sister who started college a week before they had to get evacuate. So my sister and her room mate who is from New York just went with some guy they met and took off to central Louisiana. Being down there before I can only imagine what the place is going to look like when its all flooded. All of the major highways are baisically bridges tjhat are only like 20ft above water so the roads will probobly be trashed.

From my hometowns newstation wavy.com:
"I'm not doing too good right now," Chris Robinson said via cellphone from his home east of the city's downtown. "The water's rising pretty fast. I got a hammer and an ax and a crowbar, but I'm holding off on breaking through the roof until the last minute. Tell someone to come get me please. I want to live." |
heh, I got hit by two cat 4s last year, and we got the worst part, scary sh!t...... hurricanes suck!!
|
My friend's name is Katrina.
k, that's all. |

|
I'm always random on these boards.
Get with it! :] |
www.nola.com <-a new orleans news site..
this hurricane has gotten me super busy here at work with all of the news/stats/relief efforts that Ive been putting up on our company website. Looks like weve lost almost 40 properties because of it. Our CEO was on FOX news last night talking about it and alot of our employees and members in that area are missing. Fats Domino is missing too :( |

Reality people's! |
not directly from New Orleans but from oil rigs in the area. Obviously the oil is piped from somewhere else.
|
Doesn't a large amount of oil come from Arabs? Not sure the percentage though.
|
oil comes from loads of places,a lot does come from iraq and iran (has been put forward that GWB invaded for the oil) but there is also oil underground thtas why oil rigs have been built.however oil is a fossil fuel and takes billions of years to form so DONT USE IT!!!!
green is the way forward!!!! |
re katrina though.its awfull and my heart goes out to all thoses out there or thoses with family and friends there.

Actually, a large portion of our oil (and much of Europe) is exported from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is believed that the Kingdom can actually meet the current demand, but it is choosing not to. The royal family is sitting back and probably enjoying the increasing dependence on their oil, not to mention the bankroll. We’ve had our troops over in Saudi for quite sometime, protecting the royal family and the oil infrastructures. This occupation is believed to be the “set point” for OBL’s (a Saudi himself) disgruntlement with the U.S.’s foreign policy. Someone mentioned Iraq- ironically, 90% of the oil recovered there cannot be used in motor vehicles. Even more ironic, some scientists believe the hurricane that defuncted the oil refineries in the gulf was characteristically strong like most tropic storms of the past few years- as a result of global warming. May not be true, but if it is, it surely came around and bit us all on the rear.
We can sit here and bitch about the prices at the pump (i'm in the midst of considering alternatives myself- public transportation, biking, car pooling, etc), but this situation in the New Orleans is A LOT worse than any of you think. Rescue teams can’t do much when there are delinquent gangs shooting at them. Hospitals cannot be evacuated because of snipers on roof tops. People are literally walking among the dead, feces, disease-infested sewage waters that keep rising, and no food, water, communication, or any message from authority. Not only is there a set death toll in the 1000s from the storm itself, but the numbers keep rising, with people not being able to receive appropriate medical attention or some just starving and dehydrating to death. “Anarchy” is what they’ve been calling it over in New Orleans. Even local police have resorted to looting guns before others can get to them. With all this talk of this tragic storm, there was another event that has gotten little media exposure- the 'stampede' that occurred over an Iraqi bridge during a religious pilgramage. One rumor of a suicide bomb brought panic to the large crowd, resulting in 1000 dead, either crushed or drowned. The line that divides life and death seems very thin... |
i feel what you are saying hookers,
but at the same time, is shooting at those trying to help you logical? The National Guard is trying to bring in food, but the people are acting so ignorant, they are making it impossible to help. Never is crisis an excuse for what they are doing. We complain about the gas prices because it affects us directly; it doesn't mean we dont care about what is happening in Iraq or New Orleans. The same people complaining about the high gas prices are the same people donating blood and money to the Red Cross. Well, maybe i'm just speaking for myself. |
I can't really put myself in the mindstate of what these criminals are going through. Some of these people, I assume, have lost everything. EVERYTHING. And, many were expecting immediate help. People who did not receive this attention may feel disenfranchised by local and federal governments, and/or have a "nothing left to lose" mentality. These people may be under the impression that violence is the only thing left. I have to go to class, so I'll talk more about this later.

damn!! i've been watching the news and i don't know what the hell is going on in new orleans!! complete anarchy! people shooting each other , looting.....people shooting at helicopters trying to evacuate other people?!?! snipers?! in america?!?! jesus christ!
it really is a thin line between order and complete chaos....i never thought something like this , people going completely nuts, could happen in a civilised country..... |
i think they all expected aid to come to them immediately and since they didnt get it they are upset and confused so they dont know what to do... theres also those who are just taking advantage of the situation though....
|
who the fuck cares about oil, there are so many people starving to death.

mmmm true but then you cant afford to neglect any one thing for something else in an economy as advanced as America.
|
I can understand looting, simply for the fact of survival; food and water is survival. However, what good is stealing a tv if you can't plug it in anywhere.....seriously....where did these people think they could take all the **** they took? Furthermore, the people who did manage to steal what they could hide, had to remove it during security searches when they arrived at the shelters and the out-of-state facilities.
Also, the violence, rapes, and murders are disgraceful, yet not suprising....true, the whole community is in utter chaos, but even if those odd thousand people weren't all crammed inside that super dome, the murders, rapes and violence would still exist, but on a bigger scale. I do understand human chaos, feelings of rage, and uncertainty, because we can only take enough mental strain until we explode, either emotionally or physically. NO food and NO water, and NO answers = frustration beyond feelings. Humans just need to channel their negative energies... One thing that bugs the hell out of me is the fact that in times of life or death, our society has so many problems and conflicts with the idea of cohabitating together. In other countries and societies, families of 20 or more live together in one little hut.....it makes me question if our society has flawed some of the best qualities of living period. If disasters weren't enough, humans have to add to the fire. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9178253/ |
Why in Gods name did'nt the authorities (and they knew that this was going to happen) organise the mass evacuation of those citizens who were unable to get out of New Orleans?
Surely they could have ferried these people out of the city... in buses... days before the hurricane hit? Saving the lives of thousands!! If it was down to the matter of economics and logistics, then would'nt it have been cheaper and easier than airlifting the survivors out by helicopter, in what now looks like a massive military operation? |
Breaking news
Police shoot dead 8? Army contractors in New Orleans. WTF is going on?? Update; Despite both the police and the army announcing the above, the story has now changed. They now say a gunman shooting at contractors, was shot dead by police...very strange. |

Haven't they only had a few hundred found dead so far?
