It's about ****ing time some musician had the balls to take on Spotify. If they lose more top-level artists this might actually force them to do something about these evil misinformation/disinformation-spewing trolls like Rogan. Down with Spotify! Boycott the platform!

Pity. One wonders if Spotify has bitten off more than they can chew.
|
I think they make way more money off Rogan than Young.
|
Maybe, but if Young fans start unsubscribing, and some sympathizers follow, they could be taking a real hit.
|
Not a fraction as much as if they lost all those Rogan listeners.

I made two points elsewhere on this. First is that Neil Young on his own will make no impression, being seen as dad-rock and therefore not really Spotify's customer demographic, but that if others followed - big artists - Springsteen, U2, Robbie Williams, Rhianna, Ariana - what the **** am I talking about? Well anyway, big artists they can't afford to lose - essentially, if this started (which I doubt it will) a big landslide of artists pulling their music then maybe they might start looking at Rogan. It might also be possible that, should this disinformational turd start getting sued it might make things uncomfortable for Spotify. Time will tell.
The other thing is that I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of Rogan's listeners have not signed up for premium membership, so we're talking about most likely a huge swathe of people who are using Spotify for free, and putting up with the ads every few minutes. These are not the kind of people, I would imagine, Spotify wants. So if they start losing paying customers to hold onto freeloaders, well, they might very well have to rethink their position. |
I'm all for the reason behind what Young did but it's pretty f*cking naive and small minded to think that Spotify would have actually cut ties with Rogan.
Mr. Rogan, can you explain to the court just why you're here today. I'm here to sue Spotify for breaking a legally binding contract we signed by which I was to receive a sh*t ton of money in exchange for services. Spotify, do you have a legitimate reason why you broke contract with Mr. Rogan? Neil Young got mad at us and said he'd leave unless we did this. Yeahhhhh uhhhhh you lose. Case dismissed ... Young really should have just said "I'm leaving Spotify for this reason" instead of giving them some sort of ultimatum that was never going to realistically happen. He sounded f*cking stupid. |
