Basically, it looks like in most of the world it is allowed for private citizens to own a weapon, but only in the US and Yemen can you own a weapon without any license whatsoever.

I think the difference is that people in Europe just don't have the same culture of owning weapons.

It's also a point of note that most, perhaps all, police forces other than the US have only a special armed unit who carry weapons. Your average Guard, Bobby or Gendarme does not. So with police not being armed as a matter of course, certainly that shifts the balance of power against them but it also means your average criminal knows he can probably get away doing a robbery etc without a gun. From their point of view, I guess, the more chance you have of being shot at, the more reason to bring a gun to the party. Like you say, the rest of us just don't have that gun culture. I don't hear of gun clubs in Ireland (though they may exist) and there are certainly no gun shows, or shops.

Europe is capitalist and that’s bad. But you are not infested with American Necro-Capitalism.

Rich people make a lot of money selling guns. That settles the matter in America.

It’s not about armed protests, protecting your family, giving women a defense against sexual assault, deer hunting, cop killing, genocide on black folk, or any of that. It’s a product. People profit from it.

Am I broken record? It’s not my fault it always boils down to the same thing.

Gun Ownership by Country 2021

Quote:
Gun ownership varies significantly around the world. The only three countries that consider gun ownership a constitutional right are Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States. Over 175 countries allow their citizens to own firearms, and many have specific regulations on ownership, such as banning certain types of firearms.

The ten countries with the highest civilian gun ownership (number of firearms per 100 people) are:

United States (120.5)
Falkland Islands (62.1)
Yemen (52.8)
New Caledonia (42.5)
Serbia (39.1)
Montenegro (39.1)
Uruguay (34.7)
Canada (34.7)
Cyprus (34)
Finland (32.4)

Well they also don't seem to start/get involved in any wars... Is conscription so bad if you only use it for defensive purposes?

Its both tbh

Gun culture in america has been present since day 1. Having a gun on the frontier was pretty ****ing important.

But in the modern day context the big arms industry companies use the NRA to indoctrinate people against any gun restrictions cause it's good for business. They take the already existing gun culture and weaponize it against any threats to the industry.

How the **** could you not understand it’s about money? Gun lobby. Money. Gun sales. Money. Arms manufacturing. Money. Weapons development. Money.

Guess how you get a gun at a gun show. You pay money.

Who funds the Republican Party? The gun lobby. How do they do that? With money. Who do they work for? Weapons manufacturers. Why do people manufacture weapons? To sell them.

Spoiler for “$”:
For money
