That's great to hear Tore, congrats! I've met (through work) and become friends with some Norwegians from Bergen in Kuala Lumpur. I've also been to Oslo 2 years ago, never thought that would happen (it was cold as a witch's tit of course). So now I have totally different perspective of Norway and Norwegians....:D

Was your trip for business or pleasure? |
Business. I managed to stop by the old Munch museum and went around the port a bit. It seemed like an ok middle European town. I imagine there are many much more interesting things to see in Norway...;)

I dunno the situation in your country but in America I believe banning these assault weapons is kinda pointless and more of a symbolic gesture. There are some shootings such as in Vegas where maybe it wouldn't have been possible without that kinda gun but in general a couple of handguns with extended or spare clips are more than sufficient to shoot up a group of innocent civilians. Also, these mass shootings get all the attention while they are a very slim minority of the gun homicides in this country. The vast majority of which are committed with ordinary hand guns. |

This ties in to a lot of stuff, though. I mean, people here don't own guns for protection because most people don't feel like they need protection. We don't expect criminals to have guns. We don't see them on our police officers either. Guns are just not part of our consciousness unless it's to do with hunting. If you put a norwegian in the US, he might not feel so safe anymore and might opt to get a handgun. Who knows? So in a sense, I guess the gun culture has deep roots way into societal workings that don't directly involve guns. Without reflecting too much, it's possible that gun violence is a symptom rather than a disease in itself. However, tougher gun control might still be a way to break out of a negative feedback loop (if criminals have guns, more people want access to guns which in turn makes it easier for criminals to get guns). |
"Protection against polar bears"? Yeah I can imagine: there you are, minding your own business in your shop when these four white bears walk in, dark glasses, threatening aspect. One, clearly the leader, signals to the others, who lock the door and pull down the shade. Your heart begins to hammer. The lead bear approaches you, nose to nose, and says in a quiet voice "Nice place ya got here. It would be a shame if something were to - OH I'm sorry!" As he knocks down a statuette and it shatters on the floor. "See?" he says, looking up with a wounded grin, "accidents happy so easily, don't you think? Well now," he leans forward with a faux-friendly smile, "that's where me and the boys can help..."
Happens everywhere! It's a real problem. And the cops do nothing - backpaw payments and those who can't be bought are whitemailed... :( |

As for gun violence and criminals... like I said earlier the best thing i think we could do is to set up a robust registry/database for maintaining proof of possession of legal guns, the same way you have to renew your tags on your car to keep it street legal. That would make it harder to do straw purchases and leak illegal guns onto the streets for criminal use. But people in this country are so paranoid that they see any such registry as just the first step in the govt coming in to take everyone's guns away. They're making a list... they're checking it twice... you get the idea. |
They're afraid Santa is gonna take their guns?

News Alert: House passes gun control legislation
The House passed gun legislation that would expand background checks on all commercial gun sales, marking the first congressional move on significant gun control since Democrats won the White House and the majority in both chambers of Congress. The House passed the legislation in two separate votes. |
****ing idiots. The Senate will kick it in the balls, the right wing base will be stoked, and political capital will be flushed down the toilet. And for what? Background checks? They'll let the Senate Parliamentarian kill legislation people actually care about but waste our time with this garbage?

You can't ban guns because of the Second Amendment but it should be limited for hunting purposes and for protection in the home/business only. I think there should be a ban on assault weapons as well. Open carry laws like you're John Wayne isn't something I'm crazy about either.
|
open carry is now the norm in texas but TBO i dont like open carry
i like to conceal my weapon under my shirt the problem with open carrying your gun on your belt on your side if your in a crowded public place i betcha u might get that one theif of bad guy that will try to sneak up behind you or beside you and rip/steal your gun off U but there is pros and cons i can wip out my gun anyways in less then a second |

I would think the problem with open carrying is rather that everyone gets scared of eachother.

My guido republican uncle just bought a gun after moving to nc from Los Angeles. Said he's "not sure about the area" (Statesville, Nc - population ~30k) lol.
Now he's moved to the coast near Wilmington and he calls my mom up and is like i can't find the gun.... Lol. He like blah blah blah it's a $350 dollar gun (standard glock 9mm) and I'm like this is exactly why people like you shouldn't have ****in guns... He's not crazy or anything just eccentric, angry, rude, racist, loud Italian ny type. Gets in verbal fights with people everywhere he goes. Exactly the type to **** around and end up shooting someone in an altercation. And he legit thinks there needs to be some sorta revolution.. If you tell him he shouldn't have a gun hed say you have to be armed incase the govt goes tyrannical |
