You know what this reminds me of? As the Allies pushed further and further across Europe and came across the concentration camps, the Nazis made a point of killing as many of the prisoners as they could, sometimes force-marching them away from the camp to be killed, sometimes even mass-executing them as the Allies were at the gates of the camp.
