you wouldn't figure this out by having them run the 40

IQ tests aren't the mental equivalent of running the 40. They are designed to test multiple domains of intelligence simultaneously.

They aren't perfect, but they are the best thing available. Running the 40 would be more like just giving you a series of digits and seeing how many you can recite back. That's testing only one specific domain of intelligence, namely memory.
