You realize asking a question isnt a strawman? Im not making an argument. I was curious how you came to your conclusion about current treatment. Comparing the diagnosis and treatment of a mental disorder to a broken arm seems like something that can be reasonably questioned to me. Maybe i could have phrased it better but im still not sure how you get off comparing the two.
If you did know what you were talking about you could have told me “no, they should be doing xyz but instead they abc because blah blah”. |

1st is critiqued by the simple fact that brain scans don't always catch mental illness and 2nd is just a false statement since psychiatrists, the ones that prescribe medicine to treat mental illness, are required to work in neurology for at least 6 months. Even psychologists, from what I understand, need to have a certain understanding of neurology in order to get a degree. It's not personal. Not on my end.

FTR im still curious what those of you that have gone through the process think needs to be improved besides accessibility. I just deal with **** on my own and pop a small dose of xanax on rare occasion. I dont like the idea of meds cause they seem to fix one thing and break 5 others.

I mean there obviously needs to be a complete overhaul of the pharmaceutical industry, which would ideally lower cost and therefore accessibility. But it's also about investing in research and destigmatization and advocacy. That's fine that a xanny works for you but "dealing with ****" on your own just sounds like a willfully ignorant misunderstanding of the actual chemical imbalance of depression.
If your power steering goes out are you not going to attempt to fix it in case you get an oil leak next? Not liking the idea of meds doesn't mean anything. |

I mean if fixing my power steering means sometimes my car wont start and my lights arent as bright then nah i dont want it fixed.
I dont feel like its enough of a burden yet to make the trade offs that come with it. And yes ive done absolutely nothing to educate myself about it. |

Maybe even a better sense of communication between the doctor and the patient. Perhaps some patients have a hard time describing what they experience or with hold information. Getting a better understanding of my mental illnesses and how they work has drastically helped me put what I'm going through into words. Communicating the problems your medication causes you is going to help your psychiatrist determine which medication to switch you to. If your psychiatrist doesn't seem to listen then get one that does.

I get that brains scans don’t and won’t always catch mental illness. My point is that the first course of action should be to define the physiological impairment whenever possible. Just in my case, for example, ten years on I have no access to anything close to the kind of care where the doctor would say let’s look and see and I could afford it. Brandon Marshall is a wide receiver in the NFL that suffers from mental problems. He has millions of dollars and he’s donated a lot of money to advocate and treat the mentally ill. I watched an interview with him where he described all the care he received including brain scans so doctors could see (whatever they could) what was going on. He doesn’t just take pills. They literally look inside his skull and monitor the operations of his brain. In the interview he described all his treatment and he said that’s the kind of care I want everyone to receive. Bat, perhaps jokingly, says I’m pissed because no psychiatrists will return my calls but he’s absolutely right. That is exactly why I’m pissed. The only clinic that was made available to me doesn’t even have a psychiatrist overseeing it. There’s no one there that knows **** about the ****ing brain! It’s obscene. ****ing Middle Ages bull****. Btw, I don’t think it’s personal for you. But DWV is trolling me. If y’all can’t see that whatever.

Idk any medication that doesnt have side effects which are the problems i was speaking too. I have psoriasis i can take a pill that makes it almost non existent but it will lower my immune system. Im good ill deal with some dry skin and itching. Same goes for mental health meds. Thats all i was saying.
