Default Entitlements

Are there certain things that everybody should be entitled to, regardless of income (food, shelter, emergency medical care, etc.)? Should anything ever be distributed to the populace for free by the government?

Tbh, I made this thread 'cause I think it's kind of disgusting that people in a first world country like America have to break the bank for the privilege of not dying from horrible diseases.

Agree, health care would have been the first one I thought of, also housing and education.

Certain things ARE given out for free, at least here. I have a free transport pass, we used to get free bin collections (till they opened the refuse collection to tender and away from the council) and we get a free TV licence. No means test.

I will add that EVERYONE, no matter their income, is entitled to Child Support here, and that annoys me. Families who are stinking rich and do not need it still get to collect it, and I think that's wrong. Oh, and everyone gets a state pension when they reach retirement age.

Currently only over 65s get the bus pass here. But the next Labour government will provide a free bus pass to all under 25s.

I mean, they are "free" to those who use them without paying into the tax system, or at least those who get more out of it than put in.

Well I worked for 29 years so I paid more than my fair share of tax. I get the free pass now due to my status as carer. You think that's wrong?

I think if you lived in a system without taxes, and knew you didn't have those benefits, you may have made a strategic decision to get some life insurance, health insurance etc.

But you do live in a system with taxes and have been promised those benefits, so why shouldn't you receive something back?
