What I hope is that some of your fears turn out to be exaggerated. For instance, I've been listening to reports of 14-foot storm surges, which is devastating enough, but less than what you mentioned.
Bottom line: I really hope you and your friends can come through this without too much suffering or loss.

It's been downgraded to a tropical storm so even though it is heading to Atlanta. It hopefully won't be as bad.

Well of course the media just love a good storm story. In fact, just between themselves, newcasters describe those scenes of wind-whipped trees and flooding as "weather porn."

None the less, Irma is historically exceptional in its size and power. It has destroyed 95% of the buildings on Barbuda and is responsible for 23 deaths so far. A lot of the reporting is pretty factual, no? At times it was a Category 5 hurricane, so I'm assuming that's what it was, no exaggeration.
