He's right but I'd argue that bad parenting and a lack of mentorship outside of education are also massive factors.

There are certain career paths you can dive into where arguments about meritocracy do apply. You want to work on cars for a living, but then you flunk out of trade school because you just don't do due diligence, decide to smoke weed instead of showing up to learn, etc. etc. Individual choice does play into outcome in society at some level.
