Shock turns to anger in Beirut over warnings before deadly explosion

Quote:
Shock at the devastation caused by the massive port explosion in Beirut was giving way to anger Thursday, as new information emerged that officials in the Lebanese capital had ignored repeated warnings about a stockpile of dangerous chemicals linked to the blast.

There is a growing body of evidence, including emails and public court documents, that officials knew about a shipment of thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate -- once described as a "floating bomb" -- that had been confiscated by Lebanese authorities and was being stored in a warehouse at the port for the past six years, but had failed to act.

The revelation that the blast could be attributed to government negligence has reignited long-held frustration at Lebanon's political class, which sunk the country deep into debt, and at endemic corruption that lined the pockets of the wealthy elite at the expense of basic public services and infrastructure.

The country was already seeing rising unemployment, soaring prices and a currency in free fall -- for many, the explosion is further proof of government ineptitude and corruption.

Melissa (NumberNineDream if anyone remembers- she hasn't posted since 2011 lol) lives in Lebanon as well. I reached out to her yesterday and she and hers are all fine.

I suspect he's saying if you encourage voting for Biden because Trump is bad, you're a neolib.

Not sure how that works with Chomsky who's written extensively about anarcho-syndicalism, but that he and I share the same position on how to approach this election and deal with the aftermath is so....*chef's kiss*

That’s 100% correct. I’m surprised there’s any question about it. Biden is an old school corrupt af big business capitalist. Chomsky said the same sellout bs about Hillary.

I'm going to explain myself before I ask this question so I can tell myself I'm not pushing a rock up a hill.

When I see something like this, my brain just immediately goes "You should find out where the disconnect is here." And frankly, I hate that because all too often the Internet isn't discussing things in good faith. People are bored, they want a reaction because it provides more dopamine than a Facebook like. But I'm going to ask one last time, just in case this is the winning lottery ticket.

Biden is, in fact, an old school politician. And while I don't think he's as nefarious as Mitch McConnell, I do think he's carried the water for Credit Card companies that I think are bad-faith actors in the American government. So, sure, if that's corrupt to you then fine.

But this argument seems to suggest that Biden, fitting this definition of corrupt, will just be NeoLib Redux, so why vote for him? What I can't understand is how the party plays no role in this equation, the leftward moving forces in America will have no effect in this scenario, and how you can arrive at the conclusion that the POTUS is the be all/end all of public policy.

How does only the President matter in your political world view?

Totally agreed. I mean look at these examples from this very thread:

Can we discuss the fact that you follow-up to most of my posts with an antagonisitic response frequently? I mean I get you're not good at debating and don't have any real positions that could be put into public policy, but this stalker activity is unprofessional and creepy.

I guess one way to look at it is a vote for Biden isn't really a vote for Biden. It's a vote for whoever his VP is. She will inevitably do everything and take charge while they quietly wheel Joe off to Sunny Hills Estates.
