Sometimes I wonder where black people find the perseverance to keep carrying on. Could it be that it’s harder to create the space to kill yourself in prison? Is there a grey area between homicide and suicide kind of like accidental and intentional drug overdoses? Like a parallel between taking too many pills and risking death by dealing with people who are likely to kill you aggressively in the sense of being nonchalent with death? I’m not trying to blame the victim or make false equivalencies. I’m just wondering why white people are more likely to call it quits. Maybe it’s simply because white people expect more at the get-go. If it’s cultural what is exactly about the cultures. Religion? Family? Free time? Ozzy?

Anecdotally I think I’ve witnesed this. This one black guy I’m friends with worked at a Jiffy Lube type place where the gave him five uniforms for the week and the weekend to wash them. He quit and didn’t return them and spent eight months in jail for theft. After he got out he became a cook and kept working hard af. Put it behind him.

That definitely would’ve broken my spirit.
