As for a doc. maker needing to have an opinion. Disagree. I think it's a presentation of facts.

That's the ideal for sure. The issue is that documentaries are movies or series, so people approach them with a preconception that they're going to be watching something entertaining and cinematic. The cinematic playbook is built around evoking emotions, which leads to many documentaries spending a lot of time clipping their facts to make them more snippy and introducing suspense/conflict/etc. in the editing room to evoke the intended response that the unedited interviews and other material just doesn't muster. Audiences reward this, so these are the documentaries that studios will take a chance on funding. Emotions are great for persuasion, so activists use that cinematic pathos as a tool to spread awareness for their message, often successfully when it reaches the intended audience despite how accurate the facts presented are. Combine those two and you have a field so dominated by documentarians looking to enforce their opinion that it seems like the rule. Seems like series can get away with being a little (emphasis on little) more fact-based since they only need to hold the audience's attention for an episodic amount of time.

I prefer meta-analyses.
